Intro
2K Sports have rolled out their tennis series again with "Top Spin 3", but does this game have what it takes to be a grand slam? Or is it game set and match for this title?
Career Gameplay
"Top Spin 3" in split into 3 game modes, you can either follow your character from amateur to professional with career mode. Or you can choose your character or a licensed player and compete in tournament mode or play with friends or by yourself in quickplay.
Career mode starts you off as an amateur and you have to progress through the tournament and challenges to become the best in the sport. To increase your player skills you have to win matches and tournaments, which also give you, unlock points. Unlock points allow you to purchase items in the shopping mall. You can chose from various attire including big brands such as Nike and Adidas. You also receive money for winning the tournaments but you can not use this money for anything which is strange, it would have been common sense to use the money to buy attire instead of the unlock points.
They have kept the button configuration the same as the previous title. A is your flat shot, B is your top spin, X is your slice shot and Y is your lob shot. However in this version they have changed the way you hit the ball. In previous titles you would just tap the button to return the ball, but this time around it is all about timing. You now have to hold the button and get the right timing to return the ball, this can be hard to get used but after you get over it you will find it is much more realistic.
Graphics & Sound
Top Spin 3 is visually stunning, but it's the little things that make it look so great. From the minor courts with the gradually wear visible to the major courts looking pristine and the packed out crowds engulfing you in the atmosphere. The character models of the top players and created characters look first-rate and the animation of the different strokes and volleys are impressive. As your player get more fatigued sweat will appear on their shirts which I thought was a very nice touch. Also when playing on clay you can see the ball lines and foot movements wearing the clay down. The frame rate is brilliant and I haven't experiences any slowdown or glitches while playing.
Top spin has a very random and limited soundtrack. You have hits groove classics from the 90's to modern rock but there is only a limited amount of songs on there, so you would end up putting your own music on as you would be sick of hearing the same song over again. The crowd only find there voice at the end of rallies and you don't get the gasp or the cheers if someone make a great shot during the rally which is disappointing.
Changed Multiplayer
"Top Spin 3" completely changes the multiplayer from there previous title. Instead of the basic ranked matches you now have World Tour. This is basically like career mode but online, you can compete in all the tournaments from tournament mode including the grand slams. You have to load your created character, which is who you play as during your online career. The seasons online last for 14 days and you can keep track of your progress on the leaderboards. You can also play with your friends in a single match or a doubles match. I didn't experience any lag or glitches while playing as well.
Conclusion
"Top spin 3" is one of the best tennis games on the market at the moment. The career and world tour modes produces hours of play, the graphics are visually beautiful the frame rate is top notch and the license players look and play just like there real life counterparts.
This game is a must buy for any tennis fan and good buy for anyone else as well.
