Multiplayer-tastic!
Team Fortress was probably played less than 'Counterstrike', but as a mod, it was still thoroughly excellent, and totally different, as you chose a class with advantages/disadvantages, then took part in objective-based multiplayer games.
Now it's back after nearly 10 years, with a fancy new cell-shaded look, new maps, but the same core gameplay. Can the game still deliver the frankly disgusting levels of fun that the original provided?
Graphics and Gameplay
The graphics in TF2 are not particularly groundbreaking, or amazing in the same way say "Gears of War" or "Oblivion" are, but they fit the game, and the style of the game perfectly.
The actual graphics are pretty good anyway, but the real triumph is in the animation, which is truly superb.
The game is like taking part is a live action cartoon, and never ceases to amaze and delight. The sound is of equally high production, with excellent gun effects, and some pretty good lines of speech flying about. There's no music as such, but as you'll probably be talking, there is no real need for it.
The core gameplay is basically the same as in the previous game- you have a team, either red or blue, and you have a series of objectives depending on the map, like attacking/defending a base, or capturing the most bases.
There isn't a great deal of variety, but this never seems to matter. The maps are tightly made, with plenty of great areas for camping, sniping, and lots of bottlenecks where large battles take place.
The balance is great, no class seems overpowered, and the maps are a great size; you never feel too cramped or too far away from the action. This makes the game a joy to play. Aiming is spot on, there is no lag, every aspect is polished, professional, and puts a smile on your face, which, lets face it, is what gaming should be about!
Conclusion
"Team Fortress 2" is a wonderful achievement from Valve. It may be short on content, but the promise of new, regular, free maps is excellent, and the gameplay and visual style is just so fantastic that the whole game is a joy to play, and is frankly a surprise hit as part of the 'Orange Box'. TF2 probably won't be the first game you try in the Orange Box, but it may well be the best game in there!
