"Need For Speed: ProStreet" is really not a street racer, you never ever do any street racing at all, which makes the title of this game totally bizarre. Instead, EA have moved the series to a collection of tracks around the world, based on numerous real-life roads. But does this approach work, and will this new direction appeal to the hordes of loyal NFS buyers?
Gameplay
The gameplay in ProStreet is a little hit and miss. The move to track racing, whilst not unwelcome, is certainly a huge shift from the previous games, and stops the game from being differentiated from the competition anymore. Furthermore, the actual handling model is pretty weird. It is more realistic than Project Gotham's, but is hardly a simulation. The same can be said for the damage modelling. It's all less realistic than Forza, which is what this game is clearly trying so hard to be.
Thankfully, the sheer number of options, types of race, customisation, and race day structure make it less of a wannabe and more of a contender. However, the odd handling is not for everyone, and will make the game somewhat of a marmite title that you will either love or hate.
Graphics and Sound
The graphics in ProStreet are stunning, whether you play in HD or SD, and generally, the game runs very well too. However, there can be some slowdown, which appears at seemingly random points and can get pretty marked at times.
Generally, this can all be forgiven, thanks to the excellent car models, great damage, and well modelled tracks complete with an array of spectators and the like. There is a great race atmosphere that many other titles have failed to capture, which is a big plus about the game.
Sound-wise, the game is excellent in terms of engine and crowd noises, with some very well mixed 5.1, but the announcers are really annoying. The music is the usual EA mix, and will either be appealing or grate depending on your personal tastes, but it fits the game OK and was never annoying for me despite a move away from the traditional NFS rock soundtrack.
Multiplayer
The multiplayer options in ProStreet are pretty developed, and there are some cool features, such as being able to upload photos, ghosts and replays to the net. You can also share blueprints of tuned vehicles and custom race days with your friends, and then race them.
However, the online can be a little laggy in comparison to other titles, so whilst there are some great gameplay options, the actual gameplay itself leaves a bit to be desired. Hopefully a patch will fix this.
Conclusion
NFS: ProStreet is an accomplished title, but why the change? The street racing of the previous games was far more fun, and to be honest, wasn't tired yet, although Carbon was pretty rubbish, that was more down to the handling and graphics and gameplay issues when compared to Most Wanted or NFSU. Hopefully that game style will return soon.
But the amazing graphics and solid gameplay hold up well, although the game was never going to be as good as PGR4 or Forza 2. However, if you have played these 2 games to death, 'ProStreet' is easily the next best road racer of 2007, and is well worth a play thanks to the customisation options and lengthy career mode.
