Race Day:
"Moto GP 07" is supposed to be a refreshing new take on the motor-bike racing season, with more options for those new to the series, and a whole race-day atmosphere to make the experience more realistic. In addition, with improved graphics and framerate, and an expanded Xtreme mode, can Moto GP 07 deliver upon all of its promises?
Graphics, sound and Gameplay
Graphically 'Moto GP 06' had some serious problems, suffering from a terrible framerate and some other glitches. "Moto GP 07" unfortunately does not fix all of these. The framerate, whilst much better, can still bog down, whilst some surfaces look too shiny. Furthermore, when the tracks get wet, something just looks unnatural, unrealistic, especially as the tracks look amazing in the dry in general.
The sound is pretty average, whilst the bikes sound great, the music is limited and pretty generic, and will soon be turned off once you realise that there are only about 5 tunes so they repeat really, really quickly. No music would have been better.
Gameplay-wise, nothing has really changed, despite what Climax says. The race-day intros are short, badly animated, and feature blocky grid-girls that look like they have been lifted from a N64 game. In terms of catering for new players, there is now a slider where you can adjust how realistic the gameplay is, but even on '0% simulation' the game is still really difficult to learn, whilst the tutorial is worse than useless in pretty much every respect.
Its also annoying that in order to race the exciting Xtreme mode, you are forced to race a regular Moto GP season first. This might be the meat of the game, but Xtreme is also very deep, and this should be open from the start, especially as many buy the game just for this mode. The season is pretty realistic, but isn't different in any way from previous games. To be honest, the "Xtreme mode" is also largely unchanged, with only 1 new track, bringing the total new tracks to 2, which is pretty poor considering the game has been in development for the last 18 months.
Better Multiplayer?
Multiplayer has always been one of the strong points of the series, as it was one of the very first Live enabled games. Again, 16 players can battle it out online, but to be honest, nothing much has changed since 2002. There is just lots of racing, although you can now take part in tournaments and pink slip races.
However, the tournaments are just a few races strung together, whilst the pink slip races are sparsely populated due to the incredible risk associated as it can take up to 10 hours of gameplay to buy a bike back if you lose it. Actual game performance however is good, although, in general, fewer people seem to be playing than in pervious iterations of the game, so game sessions are normally a lot smaller.
Conclusion
"Moto GP 07" is the laziest update Climax has produced. Most of the new updates are fairly pointless, and don't really add much to the experience of the game. The gameplay is pretty much unchanged, and once again, it offers a fairly hardcore experience that will only be attractive to a few people. Finally, for those desperate for a motorcycle game, the fact that PGR4 has successfully incorporated them will drive away many from the game. Multiplayer has been fairly dead compared to Moto GP 06 too, so unless you are a massive fan of the series and cannot do without the update, then perhaps it is better to wait for the 08 version of the game.
