Back to World War II
With the many numerous World War II games saturating the gaming market today; it can become very easy to overlook any new game even remotely based on the second big war. Though this is not the case for this particular WWII game.
From the developer company Infinity Ward comes Call of Duty 2. A truly great World War II shooter that actually sets itself apart from the millions of other WWII shooters out there in the market today. Well maybe not from its PC counterpart, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
A different approach in presenting WWII
Now as everyone has already figured out by now Call of Duty 2 follows events that occurred during the second big war. If you didn’t already know that then I advise you to go into the corner and hang your head in shame.
Though one thing you might not know about Call of Duty 2 is the ways its story is presented. This game takes a different approach to presenting the events of WWII. Instead of following one officer throughout the entire game, in COD2 you follow four. The story is split up into four campaigns, and each one centers on a different soldier as he tries to complete his mission.
In addition to following four different soldiers the game also shows different perspectives of the war, for each soldier hails from a different country including Britain, Russia, and America. This helps to gain a better view of the overall scope of WWII, and adds a refreshing new outlook on the many different nationalities who fought alongside each other during the war.
Better Gameplay?
Now, to start things off the overall gameplay in COD2 is by far one of the best first person shooters I have experienced in a long time. This is due in part to the combination of a great control scheme, responsiveness, and enemy AI.
To begin, the control scheme of COD2 is very well done. Even though it is basically the same as any other control setup for first person shooters (FPS). Although with the Xbox360 controller it all controls fluidly, but more importantly the responsiveness of the control is great. With fast paced action found in "Call of Duty 2" there has to be an accurate and precise control scheme in order to survive the long duration of the war. With this game it no exception.
Next thing to discuss about Call of Duty 2 is the Artificial Intelligence (or AI for short). Once again this game shines in this aspect. The AI in COD2 is very intuitive and reacts differently based on the situation. For instance, if you set off a smoke bomb amongst a group of enemies and enter to try and take them out. The enemy AI will react in one instance by shooting through the smoke hoping to hit you, or in another instance the enemy AI will run around in the smoke hoping to get up close and personal with you by giving you a swift gun butt to the side of your head. Either way the enemy AI is very smart and very relentless.
Though in order to feel the full effect of the AI you must play on the hardest difficulty setting, "veteran". With this setting you must play smart and find cover WHENEVER YOU CAN. If you do not be prepared to be restarting every two
Realistic Visuals and Sound ?
Now onto the visual aspect of the game. Since it is an Xbox360 game, the visuals are outstanding. From the slight details of scratches and dings on your weapons to blowing sand when driving a tank through the desert in Africa. Each visual found in this game is well crafted and full of small details that add to the overall flair of COD2.
Another noteworthy part of COD2 is the audio. The audio in this game is amazing and so vibrant you actually feel as if you're in the trenches fighting the Nazi onslaught alongside your fellow soldiers. This is attributed to the fact of the pure ambiance that surrounds your character during the missions. May it be the sound of bullets flying by as they nearly miss your body.
The sound of distant gun fire that fills the air, or the terrifying sound of grenades bouncing off the ground towards. Because we all know that this 'sound' means "get the hell out of there". Though most notably the orchestral tracks that play and change during tense moments in the game draws the player further into the the depths of this game.
Multiplayer
The next thing that will be discussed has to be by far the best part of Call of Duty 2 as many would already know. The multiplayer of COD2 is nothing less than amazing. Each online game is extremely intense as you go up against numerous well crafted online players at once in a frenzy filled shootout with each other. Also the match making process is simple and quick and games are launched in little to no time at all, and all this will keep you coming back for more. In short, good solid 'multiplayer'.
Conclusion
In the end, Call of Duty 2 is a must have game for any Xbox3 60 owner. With its stunning visuals, excellent gameplay, and amazing audio track. Each in its own right help propel this game into the top echelons of the WWII shooter franchise. With such an excellent game as this out there there is no doubt a lingering anticipation for Call of Duty 3 is due out November 2006. Though until then COD2 will easily help tide you over, for this game was strong coming out at launch and continues to go strong today even a year later.
