Bad Company
"Battlefield" games are renowned for their huge battlefields, mammoth multiplayer games and vehicular warfare. Can DICE's second attempt at creating Battlefield for consoles pay-off?
People who have played the previous Battlefield will have probably thought it could've been that little bit more. DICE have fortunately given their all to create one of the better shooters currently available on next-gen consoles.
Bad Story
You play as a new member of Bad Company, a team of army misfits. Early on in the game, Bad Company realise they are fighting 'Legionnaire Mercenaries', who are rumoured to be paid in gold bullion. Members of Bad Company find a piece of gold bullion and set out on their own personal agenda. "Bad Company" offers a story full of action, twists and brilliant characters.
Destructible Gameplay
DICE have revolutionised the first person genre with their new 'Frostbite' engine. This engine allows the game to have fully destructible environments alongside superb graphics. Destructible environments have been seen in other games, however, DICE have done a superb job and have nearly nailed it to perfection, although there are however some problems with the environments. Support walls within buildings cannot be destroyed; this was of course purposefully built in as it the game would face problems if whole buildings could crumble down. Saying that, seeing full buildings fall would've made that little extra difference.
Bad Company moves from the standard shooter offering expansive level design allowing the player to choose their own route to completion. There are 7 levels in the game, each varying from one another. Some levels have you start in vehicles which you can take with you throughout the level or simply abandon them and progress on foot.
The giant battlefields and array of weapon drops allow the levels to be executed differently in terms of using weapons. The player can choose to run and gun, blowing everything in their paths or use stealth with their knife or sniper rifles.
The controls work very well in this game, especially when on foot. The vehicle controls can seem a little iffy to start with but once gotten used to, players will have no problem driving, flying or sailing around the maps.
Graphics and Sound
Games of this size usually have downgraded graphics however Bad Company makes an exception. The graphics in this game are superb, offering some impressive character models with some equally impressive environments.
Bad Company also offers the best sound effects I've heard in a game. Everything is perfected, ranging from the weapon sounds to the characters' voices. Each character has their own personality and the voices linked to them fit the bill perfectly.
The main daddy of the sound is definitely the weapon effects. Some games offer an over the top aurora off weapon effects whereas Bad Company offers a somewhat muted, more realistic sound thanks to the 'HDR sound' featured. This meaning that the sound is output differently depending on where the player is located. This isn't mapped to certain triggers and runs as it would with real world rules.
A lot and a little
The multiplayer offers a lot but also a little. The game, at the moment, only offers one gametype: 'Gold Rush'. This is essentially and attack and defend gametype which takes advantage of the squad system and team playing. There are a handful of maps which are mammoth in size, so there is a good amount of longevity.
Bad Company also offers an award and rank system so gamers can always be trying to achieve something. Developer 'DICE' have said they will be releasing a new patch soon which will address player's comments on the game. This will include a new gametype and various changes in the game such as team voice etc.
Conclusion
DICE have done it; with "Battlefield: Bad Company" they have released a superb addition to the Battlefield series onto consoles. The game offers a 7-8 hour story which will undoubtedly be played more than once due to its different difficulties and non-linear methods of completion.
The multiplayer is where Battlefield is well known and this game offers no exception. Although the game only offers one gametype at the moment it does have much potential and is only hindered by the voice chat only available to squads. The graphics are on par with the better games of this gen and the sound effects top most games.
With so much included in this game; expansive multiplayer, strong story and impressive visuals and sound, all in all it's a worth purchase and thus up there in my top games of this year.
