London Expo
The London Expo, a twice yearly festival of comics, anime, games and film, recently had it's spring showing at London's ExCel convention centre. We were there to get all the news and previews on the latest games (at least after I snuck off to get the signature of Edward James Olmos, who was appearing to promote the 4th series of the awesome Battlestar Galactica).
At the show, several games companies were present, including 2k, Sierra, Atari, Konami and Koei, and we had a trip round to each of their booths.
Konami had a disappointing stand, with naff posters and a couple of demo machines where you could play "Hellboy: Science of Evil", but without any PR staff, it was difficult to tell you much about the game, other than the fact it looked like a run-of-the-mill movie tie-in.
Koei had the premier of "Warriors Orochi 2" available for the press, but it played exactly like Dynasty Warriors 6, so expect this to be one for the fans only. They also had a lot of their back catalogue available to play.
Atari were showing the "new DragonBall Z game, and also Alone in the Dark" (again, sigh). They had a huge stand with loads of consoles, but we didn't stay long, as the Alone in the Dark content was identical to the previous day, and the DragonBall demo was the same one that is available on Xbox Live.
Sierra had a good showing, with PR members showing off a closed demo and videos of "Ghostbusters the game". They also had a giant Stay Puft Marshmallow man and Ecto 1, the car from the films. You could also play the "Bourne Conspiracy", which is looking extremely promising, with a mix of visceral hand to hand combat, shooting and driving. This will be one to watch out for next month.
2k were only showing off "Civ Revolution", but despite having a huge stand dedicated to the game, there were always big queues to play the game. And when we finally got a turn, you could see why. The whole game has been successfully reinvented to play perfectly on a console pad, and whilst looking fairly simplistic, the game played fantastically, with simple controls, yet all the depth you would expect from a Civ game. This should be June's game of the month.
The Expo was a load of fun, and we also checked out all the other stands, even if we weren't sure what they were all about!? Perhaps before the Autumn showing, we should brush up on our Japanese cult culture before we go!
Don't forget to check out the pictures we took @ the London MCM Expo ! (sorry about some blury pictures)
