Confrontational?
"SOCOM" has always been a popular franchise for Sony, even if it seems like a blatant rip-off of the Ghost Recon series, being a 3rd person, squad based tactical shooter with an emphasis on online play.
The game is hitting the PS3 for the first time, and we've got exclusive Beta access and bring you our impressions of this title.
The game is a pretty hefty download, with just 1 map available (although impressively both night and day available), weighing in at over 1.5GB which could be bad news for those planning on downloading the title from the PSN rather than getting the BR disc, as there are supposed to be over 10 maps available on launch, which would suggest a 5GB plus install.
What really matters here though is the online play, as there's no single player this time around. You start off creating your character (pretty limited really) before you select a region's servers, log in and find a game. Whilst things are getting better, on launch, there were a multitude of problems. Logging in would take ages, servers would boot you, and that was just the start.
In game, there was crazy lag and nasty framerate drops. Thankfully, even before the game was patched on Thursday, things had started to get better. Lag is less frequent, and when you connect to a good room, it's non existent. Chat is also very good quality. The main remaining problem is loading times, which can still take at least 5 minutes, which is dreadful. Sometimes, the game will also fail to let you join properly after this wait. Thankfully, Sony has nearly 2 months to get everything right before release.
In game, things are better. Graphics are excellent, with lovely lighting and particle effects. Sound effects are also impressive, with thumping explosions, solid gunfire, high quality in-game chat, and ringing grenades.
There are plenty of game modes available, from squad games to more frantic deathmatches, so there's something for everyone to find.
Generally, whilst the game is still littered with technical bugs, the game shows a lot of promise, and providing it releases for a good price with plenty of maps and trophy support (all have been promised) then this should be a great online experience for PS3 owners when it releases in late October.
