After the worldwide success of their debut title GTR (review here, Simbin is going retro with the release of their second race game. GT Legends, the new Simbin title, will recreate the classic era of 50's, 60's and 70's racing series.
GT Legends will be as realistic as GTR, featuring about 90 vintage race cars racing around 11 real-life racetracks. GT Legends simulates the FIA series for Historical Racing Cars, the FIA European Challenge for Historic Racing Cars and the FIA Cup for Historic Grand Touring Cars.
A big difference with GTR is that the player has to work his way through a career mode in GTL. You will have to race your way up through the series in order to buy and unlock cars before you can take them out on the track. You will start the game with a Mini Cooper, a great little car to learn to drive. After you've won some races, you will be able to buy and unlock some more powerful beasts. Furthermore, when playing online, you'll only be able to drive the cars you've earned in single player. The player gets to choose a difficulty level before each race, so damage, realism, driving aids, ai aggression, earnings etc. can all be determined to suit the player skill.
When you enter the garage, you can set up the car to improve your lap times. Although you can alter numerous settings on those classic cars, the setup screen is nowhere near as complicated as the setup screen in GTR. This doesn't mean that GTL is less realistic as GTR, there just wasn't as much to setup on those classic cars.
The damage model in GTL is an improvement as well, with damage reflected visually and in terms of performance. The new graphics engine features an impressive lighting model as well, with very realistic day-night transitions, 3D cockpits, shadows etc. The drivers got limbs now, so you can see the driver's hands on the steering wheel and reaching out to shift through the gears.
The online part of the game should be a big improvement as well. We will have to wait for the release in order to test this, but Simbin has limited the number of online players to 16, which should ensure that online play is as crisp as offline play.
All in all, it looks like GTL will be the race game to beat. The game should be in the shops on the 6th of October, so it won't take long before we can find out just how good this game is.
