New multiplayer details for Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
[Category : (default)] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, September 28 2004 @ 16:50 CET]
Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, today announced that Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory™ will include the innovative co-operative multiplayer gameplay showcased at E3 2004, as well as the critically-acclaimed, wildly successful adversarial style of gameplay (known as ‘versus mode’) introduced by Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Pandora Tomorrow. Ubisoft’s Montreal studio is developing both the single-player and cooperative multiplayer portions of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory™, while Ubisoft’s Annecy studio, developers of the versus mode of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Pandora Tomorrow, is creating the versus multiplayer campaign.

ABOUT CO-OPERATIVE MULTIPLAYER
The new co-operative maps in Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory™ require players to work together to accomplish crucial intelligence-gathering objectives that are directly related to the plot of the single-player game. Pairs of operatives must develop trust and be willing to depend on one another as they use a host of new gadgets and team-based maneuvers to infiltrate enemy strongholds and help Sam Fisher defuse escalating conflicts around the world. In tandem, the operatives will help each other complete tasks such as scaling walls too high to climb alone, reaching pipes too high for one person and keeping watch while hacking enemy computers. Created to support online, System Link or split-screen game sessions, the specifically-designed, unique maps emphasize stealth gameplay based on shadow detection and AI stimulus, and will force players to attain a new level of strategic coordination using a headset and microphone, or talking each other through the tension from opposite ends of the sofa. A special co-op knife challenge mode offers additional ways for players to collaborate and further enhances replayability. Graphically rich, with impressive use of shadow, light, animations, physics and sound technology, the cooperative maps will push the limits of online play and reaffirm the Splinter Cell® franchise’s position as the leader in multiplayer innovation.

ABOUT VERSUS MULTIPLAYER
The versus multiplayer gameplay of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Pandora Tomorrow completely revolutionized online gaming, and with Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory™, this competitive, addictive game mode continues to evolve. Players will work as teams and will compete against each other by embodying either stealthy, third-person Shadow Net Spies with specific stealth objectives, or heavily armed, first-person Argus Mercenaries charged with protecting their compounds. In several completely new levels, players will have at their disposal a host of new cooperative maneuvers and interactions, gadgets and weapons, hand-to-hand combat actions, additional ways to taunt adversaries, and two game modes (scenario and disk hunt). With destructible items, integrated climate affects that directly impact gameplay and totally redesigned visuals designed to improve accessibility and immersion, the adversarial gameplay will make Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory™ the most diverse and immersive multiplayer game on the market.

The story so far..

Back from ATARI's press conference
  [Category : In_House] [Posted by Bjorn on Saturday, September 25 2004 @ 15:51 CET]
We just got back from ATARI's press conference that was held here in Belgium.
We saw some really cool games comin' up from Atari and SEGA such as Out Run 2 (Our favourite!!!), Worms: Under Siege, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, Football Manager 2005 and much more.

Even Miles Jacobson, CEO of Sports Interactive (yes those lads from the famous Championship Manager series) was there aswell to present his new title to the press, namely exactly, Football Manager 2005.
Our first impression was ... WOW! Pretty awesome! Indeed, when Sports Interactive and EIDOS went seperate after their latest title Championship Manager 4, they didn't had the name but they still got their very in detailed database. So SI went with SEGA for a partnership of several years and had all the freedom they want to create Football Manager 2005. And you won't believe it until you have played or better managed this game. It is so clean and so in-depth. Oh yes, almost every club, national or internation league, country is in the game! Even the names from our Belgian national football groups are in there. Outstanding. And what more is that you can really but then again really manage your own club! This is really a game that every football fanatic will have to get as soon as it gets GOLD (it due to be released on 5th november). Stay tuned also for our EXCLUSIVE interview with Miles Jacobson about Sports Interactive and more importantly , about Football Manager 2005!

And while that is not all, we also manage to secure a, bit shorter but still interesting, interview with Miss Lynn Daniels from SEGA Europe.
For the record, since we are probably the first website to report this is that SEGA will announce soon some very new and interesting games for console/pc (Q1 2005) and we are almost positive that one of these new ones will be a massive game based on SONIC the hedgehog!! Still no details are given right now, all top-secret since Lynn wouldn't tell us anything about it (she will after we have send some of our most devilish e-mails!). Just kiddin'.

More on that in the interview which will pop up after the one with Miles in a few days.

We would also like to thank Wouter and Nico from ATARI for the excellent presentation and well ... drinks/foods and getting us updated with all sorts of info! Thanks guys.

“When Myst came out I thought it succeeded well in creating a feeling of other worlds in which mystery and imagination were the compelling elements instead of the usual action-packed ‘shoot ‘em ups’,” said Peter Gabriel, world-renowned recording artist. “I think there is some similarity with the way I try and create worlds of sound. I very much enjoyed working on Myst IV Revelation.”

Jack Wall composed an immersive and ambient soundtrack luring players into the depths of the Myst world. Myst IV Revelation’s music and sound capture a universal and ethereal feeling and tone, which complements the innovative artistic landscapes.
Nintendo DS will launch on Nov 21 in North America
[Category : (default)] [Posted by Bjorn on Wednesday, September 22 2004 @ 17:49 CET]
From the very start, Nintendo DSTM broke the existing rules of video game play. Two screens, not one. Wireless connection for game play and personal communication for the sheer entertainment of it. Flexible game control by voice and touch, not just with buttons. Nintendo's newest innovation, Nintendo DS, will make its worldwide debut in North American stores on Nov. 21, and then in Japan on Dec. 2. It will sell at an MSRP of $149.99, making it an immediate mass-market attraction. Nintendo DS will become the company's first system ever to make its sales debut outside of Japan.

"Nintendo's mission remains unchanged: expand the game experience," says Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. "Nintendo DS is the road map to the future of video games, and most clearly demonstrates the type of innovation that players demand."

Nintendo DS is the dual-screened, hand-held video game system redefining the idea of interactive entertainment. One screen allows for touch input using a stylus, while the unit includes both voice recognition and multiplayer wireless features. The sleek silver-and-black system sports a sharp, angular design.

Consumers immediately will be able to pick up and play the new system, as it comes with a free software feature, PictoChat, embedded in the system hardware. PictoChat allows DS owners to write messages with an on-screen keyboard or the stylus and send them wirelessly to other DS users nearby. Users can text chat, draw artistic messages or share secrets, all without saying a word. And a Nintendo DS in sleep mode will spring to life if it senses another DS in transmitting range, alerting users to each other's presence and setting the stage for an impromptu conversation or game session.

Sony will use Blu-ray disc for next-gen playstation
[Category : (default)] [Posted by Bjorn on Wednesday, September 22 2004 @ 17:45 CET]
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc announced today that it had begun preparations to adopt Blu-ray Disc ROM (BD-ROM) format as a medium for the next generation PlayStation®, the successor system to PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system.

Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a next generation high-density optical disc format that enables recording and playback of digital high-definition (HD) video signals and programs. BD-ROM format has a huge memory size of 54 GB (dual layer, single side), which is 6 times larger than that of DVD-ROM, and has the potential of becoming an ideal medium to distribute next generation entertainment content from movies and music to computer applications. Standardization of this format is currently underway lead by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).

MPEG2-TS, the signal compression technology used in Hi-Vision TV broadcasting, is also used in BD, making it possible to reproduce extremely high resolution HD video images. With the introduction of the latest high-compression code/decode technology (MPEG4-AVC, VC-1), playback of high-quality video images from HD video signals becomes possible even under a low bit-rate environment. On the computer applications front, including video games, the importance of a medium with the capability of storing huge amount of data and programs is becoming greater than ever.

The adoption of DVD format in the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system played an important role in accelerating the fusion of music, movies and computer entertainment. The huge installed base of PlayStation 2 has also contributed to the expansion of DVD-Video. Likewise, through the adoption of BD-ROM for the next generation PlayStation, SCEI aims to take part in the development of a new market created by state-of-the-art technology.

Adding sidebars to PlayDevil.com pages
  [Category : In_House] [Posted by Bjorn on Thursday, September 16 2004 @ 16:27 CET]
Today, we have added another feature to certain pages on the site. In orde to let the visitor navigate better throughout the entire site we have chosen to add also the "sidebar" that you find on the main page (also the news page).
The sidebar will give you more direct control to OUR own in-house content. Like on the news (main)page you'll be able to jump direct to the appropriate preview, review, interview, screenshot or hardware item. Also you'll be able to direct download any patch or demo that is on the sidebar. What you click is what you'll get.

Adding some more code to our pages results in better navigation and that has been very efficient to visitors because it you don't need to press that back or forward button anymore on your browser.
We are in progress in adding some more code to several pages and planning to upgrade the content.
PlayDevil.com reviews Colin McRae Rally 04 on X-box
  [Category : In_House] [Posted by Bjorn on Wednesday, September 15 2004 @ 17:07 CET]
We know, our first review again since a long time. But this means we are back on track again. Another review for PC is in the works (it still needs some editing) and it's again a top game!
Anyway today we bring you a very in-depth review of Colins latest installment, "Colin McRae Rally 04" on the X-box.
Here's a snip from the review:
The core element of this game is of course the Championship mode. Depending on your selection of a certain car class you'll be playing in a higher or lower difficulty. Two wheel driven vehicles are easier to handle, while offering reasonable speed and maneuverability.
The four wheel drive category contains the cars we see in the WRC: Subaru Impreza, Ford Focus, Peugeot 206 WRC etc. These cars go fast, very fast, so you're reactions have to very accurate and fast compared to driving a car from the lower category.

You can read the entire review right here.

King of Fighters 00/01 to remain uncensored
  [Category : X_Box] [Posted by Bjorn on Monday, September 13 2004 @ 17:07 CET]
The localisation process has long been a cause for consternation amongst European gamers. Whilst the thorny issue of black borders and 50hz/60hz slowdown are becoming a thing of the past, other, more culturally significant changes can still offend some of the more dedicated followers of Japanese games.

Up until now, the uncensored version of KOF 00/01 was only available in Japan. Subsequent releases of these titles had some gore and, er, shall we say "bounce" from a select group of fighters removed. European gamers – less offended by such trivialities - will not have to suffer such molly coddling, as their versions will be completely faithful to the originals.

Mai will seek to distract her opponents with her feminine guile and Iori will draw blood as gamers enjoy the tried and tested gameplay that has been refined over a period in excess of a decade. With 10 years under its belt and fans still clamouring for more, the King Of Fighters series will be available in all its glory, as God intended. In fact, all future SNK titles will be free from censorship.

"The decision to revert to the original code was a fairly straightforward one," says Peter Rollinson, Product Manager, Ignition Entertainment. "To keep the game as it was intended is something that we, and more importantly the fans wanted."

The King Of Fighters 2000/2001 double pack will be available for PS2 and Xbox in early November '04, for the outrageously low price of £19.99

Back from EGN and GameStars Live!
  [Category : In_House] [Posted by Bjorn on Monday, September 6 2004 @ 10:00 CET]
After a good weekend we are back and also back from our trip last friday to London where EGN and GameStars Live! were the most exciting events in Europe that day.
I must say, it was quite a good show. EGN was more concentrated on trade-only (so only available through badge) where GameStars Live! was the playing-games-all-day-long event. Was also accessible for the public, after paying 12 ponds. And yes the biggest developers and publishers were there. Electronic Arts, Atari, Activision, Microsoft, Nintendo, Konami, Ubisoft, etc are just a few to name.
The biggest stand which had my attention for a long time was Nintendo. Very outstanding games will pop up shortly for the GC and GBA. More info soon in our EGN/GS live special with pictures and info regarding the show and the games.

Another impressive product (probably the most exiciting of them all) was the stand of 'Gizmondo'. Giz who? Yes, not known until now really. Gizmondo is a new handheld system but it is just much more then that. You can play games, sms, mms, watch movies and mp3 (on sdcards), gps and gprs and it even has a digital camera built in! Really watch out for our preview of it tomorrow because we did test and play with the Gizmondo. It is truly a very exciting product and can't wait until it's out! More info tomorrow.

Every publisher has its own top notch games to show the public and Halo2, Prince of Persia2 were the 2 games that really got my attention. Wait, that doesn't mean that all the rest was crap tho. Of course not, a lot of games were shown and well most of time were pretty playable. Guess you just have to wait some time more until we do previews of them. And that won't be that long.

We are workin' right now on a preview of Gizmondo and wait until you read it ... you'll be amazed!!
Also previews of new games with shots are being written.

After all when the day ended, i was pretty tired and was glad that i was comin' home again. Now all information and previews are out to our crew and will be published in the upcoming days!

Cheers and next year ... we'll be there again!
