Nintendogs scampers onto NDS on 7th October
  [Category : Nintendo_DS] [Posted by Bjorn on Friday, July 29 2005 @ 14:34 CET]
The dog is definitely man's best friend and now you too can experience the joy of a mischievous puppy without waking up to chewed slippers and puddles on the floor. "nintendogs" scampers onto the Nintendo DS on 7th October 2005.

If getting a pet dog is not practical, Nintendo has an alternative that will definitely have you wagging your tail. "nintendogs" takes the concept of the virtual pet and adds a whole new dimension of interaction. Players can actually touch and speak to their dog which, will in turn react realistically to this attention. This interaction is unlike any other seen before on a games console. "nintendogs" is an ideal pet for people who can't own a real dog, it makes no mess, will never die and definitely won't moult all over your sofa!

Players start out by selecting their puppy from a total of six available breeds to choose from. Nintendo knows that breeds of dogs vary immensely as do people's tastes so have come up with a rather unique solution. The European version of the smash-hit "nintendogs" for Nintendo DS will come in three different packages – Labrador Retriever, Miniature Dachshund and Chihuahua - each with six different breeds of puppies to begin with, giving a total of eighteen breeds to choose, including three breeds – Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky and Boxer – not available in the Japanese version. Each breed will have a litter of three different puppies to choose from, giving players a chance to pick the sex and characteristics of their puppy.

With the hard part out of the way you are given the task of caring for and training your new pets. Innovative touch-screen controls give access to a variety of toys, treats and activities for you to use with your new pet. Playing games with your puppy will raise its skill level and help to train it, making it more obedient and opening up more options. Build up a pet's skill enough and you will even get to take part in dog shows, competing in front of a large crowd to showcase the tricks it has learnt.

Interacting with your pet has never been easier with the innovative Nintendo DS features. Want to play a game with it? With the Nintendo DS voice recognition feature, you simply call the nintendog by the name you have chosen. The touch screen is then used to select a toy or a game to play with. You can stroke, pat and tickle your dog using the Nintendo DS stylus. All "nintendogs" react to every touch, encouraging you to stroke or rub their sensitive areas, just like a real pet would. If you tickle a dog's ear it will tilt its head, go for its side and it will roll onto its back to let you rub its tummy! Users can teach their dogs to respond to spoken commands and train their puppies to ultimately obey their owners with minimal effort. "nintendogs" even features an innovative wireless detection system, which allows people to trade items as they pass in the street.

Using the Nintendo DS internal clock, nintendogs knows the difference between night and day. Nevertheless all events and activities can occur at any time. The ultra-realistic characteristic of the game prevents the dogs from learning unlimited tricks as they become tired, hungry and thirsty over time. Never before has a virtual pet offered gamers such interactivity or realism, this title really is a 'Mutts' have!

Since its launch the Japanese have been going barking mad for "nintendogs". Not only do the magazines love it, but the general public can't get enough either – so much so that sales of the Nintendo DS console have rocketed to five times the average amount during the nintendogs launch week.

Whether you are looking for a virtual pet, or the latest innovation for video game consoles, "nintendogs" is the perfect title. It combines ground-breaking technology with adorable animals that feel so real you'll want to touch them. You would have to be barking mad to not adopt a nintendogs this summer!

"nintendogs" goes on sale in the UK on 7th October 2005 at the estimated retail price of around £30.

Where is the European Gizmondo??
[Category : Handheld] [Posted by Bjorn on Thursday, July 28 2005 @ 16:11 CET]
Good question!
In fact that is a very good question. So good that we decided to verify it and call up David Maille which is the "Director" for Gizmondo France.

The Gizmondo is already available in UK but not yet in Benelux and France. And probably NOT in some other European countries as well.

After hooking up with David on the phone, he told us that the Gizmondo Benelux/France/... release will be delayed until mid September.
That might be a good deal since we're confident that many gamers will buy the PSP instead on 1st September instead of a Gizmondo.

The official word for the delay is that they are having problems with several simcards and other GPS stuff.
True or false? We don't know but one thing is for sure. If the Gizmondo fails to be released in the middle of September due to another delay or problem, we suggest that Tiger Telematics just put it back where it came from.
Indeed, in the "under development section".

So fingers crossed for the Gizmondo and we still hope to review one of those units. It's all up to you Gizmondo, err Tiger Telematics!

Take-Two Announces Federal Trade Commission Inquiry
  [Category : General_News] [Posted by Bjorn on Wednesday, July 27 2005 @ 16:40 CET]
Take-Two Interactive Software announced today that it has been notified that the staff of the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Division of Advertising Practices is conducting an inquiry into advertising claims made for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The Company intends to fully cooperate with the FTC inquiry, and believes that it acted in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Company cooperated with a recently concluded Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) investigation into this matter and has taken decisive and immediate corrective action.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, as originally marketed and sold, was intended for mature audiences – those 17 and older – and was labeled with five ESRB content descriptors: blood and gore, intense violence, strong language, strong sexual content and use of drugs. The title's M rating combined with the content descriptors reflected the game's mature themes. After it was widely reported that a third party modification could alter the retail version of the game on all platforms, the ESRB re-rated the title from "Mature 17+" (M) to "Adults Only 18+" (AO).

Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive regret that consumers may have been exposed to content that was not intended to be accessible in the playable version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The Company has taken significant steps to remedy this situation, including halting production of the current version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and has begun working on a version of the game that will not contain the elements used to enable the "hot coffee" modification. Going forward, the Company will refine the process by which it edits games and will enhance the protection of its game code to prevent such future modifications.

Take-Two Interactive recognizes and takes seriously its responsibility to ensure that its games are rated and marketed appropriately. The Company will continue to support and promote the ESRB rating system to help keep mature-themed video game content out of the hands of children.

Metal Gear Acid confirmed for PSP launch
[Category : PSP] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, July 12 2005 @ 20:03 CET]
Konami of Europe confirms Kojima Productions' title to form part of September launch line-up for Sony's PSPTM handheld video game system
Konami of Europe has announced that Metal Gear Acid, a card-based Tactical espionage action game starring characters from the popular Metal Gear Solid universe is to be a launch title for Sony's PSPTM handheld video game system, which goes on sale in September.

Developed by the newly-formed 'Kojima Productions' team which is headed up by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Acid mixes the astounding aesthetics the series is famed for with a unique card-based battle system. Assuming the role of series hero, Solid Snake, Metal Gear Acid is set in the year 2016 and begins as a terrorist faction hijacks a jumbo jet carrying a man understood to be the next US President. The terrorists demand the handing over of a project known only as 'Pythagoras', which is understood to be in development on the isolated Lobito Island.

Snake is thus charged with discovering what exactly 'Pythagoras' is and acquiring it from the heavily fortified base. To this end, players begin the game with a selection of battle cards which offer different actions during action sequences. Thus, players must carefully select cards to allow Snake to sneak around the island, take out guards and reach his ultimate targets. As with previous Metal Gear titles, Metal Gear Acid throws in a series of plot twists, while the gameplay constantly evolves as further cards and abilities become available. Over 200 cards can be collected offering Snake a wealth of offensive possibilities, weapons and characters, while different decks allow for themed missions unique to each collection, further expanding the challenge.

Metal Gear Acid will be released for Sony's PSPTM handheld video game system in September.

The long-running and award-winning series Advance Wars, has struck the Nintendo DS, leaving no prisoners in its wake. The arrival of Advance Wars: Dual Strike on 30th September brings turn based strategy gameplay onto two screens - with the touch function acting as a perfect tool for the game.

Their mission is to attack the nations of Wars World and it's up to the Allied Armies of Orange Star, Blue Moon, Yellow Comet and Green Earth to put an end to the Black Hole Army once and for all.

The game benefits from the Nintendo DS's unique functions in a great way allowing dual screen battles raging in two locations at the same time, and the touch screen control empowering you to precisely control your troops.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike offers five different single player game modes. The main single player campaign mode features many exciting missions, where players defend Wars World against the invasion and occupation of the Black Hole army. The wireless function also enables up to eight players to play head to head at any one time, allowing you to battle it out with your friends and decide who the greatest general is.

Two brand-new modes feature exclusively in this game; the survival mode - where players try to win as many battles as they can with limited resources, and a combat mode - where players control their units' movement in a real time battle.

With all the new modes and Nintendo DS functions, Advance Wars: Dual Strike is set to be a big hit when it launches on the Nintendo DS in Europe on 30th September 2005, at the estimated retail price is around £30.

First ever 'chipping' conviction in the UK
  [Category : Hardware_News] [Posted by Bjorn on Monday, July 11 2005 @ 11:50 CET]
A 22-year-old Cambridge graduate has become the first ever individual in the UK to be convicted for the illegal modification of video games consoles at Caerphilly Magistrates Court.

The offender had developed a new method of modifying Microsoft Xbox consoles, discovered in October 2004 by ELSPA's Internet Investigator, who then informed Caerphilly County Borough Council Trading Standards and Gwent Constabulary. He sold the consoles, fitting them with a hard-drive of 200GB and 80 pre-installed games, via his website for £380. The retail cost of this package, if genuine and unmodified, would be an estimated £3,000 for each one. ELSPA gathered the forensic evidence against him which led to the court result.

Mike Rawlinson, deputy director general of ELSPA commented: "This case sets a major precedent which marks a milestone in the fight against piracy and in protecting the games industry's intellectual property. It sends a clear message to anyone tempted to become involved in 'chipping' consoles that this is a criminal offence and will be dealt with accordingly. The modification of consoles is an activity that ELSPA's anti-piracy team is prioritising – it is encouraging to see the UK courts do the same."

The penalty imposed yesterday, comprising a 140-hour community service order to be carried out in the next 12 months, £750 costs and forfeiture of all equipment seized including three tower PCs, two printers, three Xbox consoles and 38 hard-drives, reflected the youth of the individual and the fact that this was his first offence.

The modification of consoles has been an illegal practice since October 2003. After intense lobbying by ELSPA, the Patent office laid the Statutory Instrument for the introduction of the Copyright Directive. This Act made the whole process of chipping consoles illegal, including selling and advertising chips as well as providing a service for chipping.

The chipping process, which enables counterfeit games to be played on a console, leaves the consumer with no recourse under any guarantee from the manufacturer and can damage the console.

Mercury will be released in Japan for PSP
[Category : PSP] [Posted by Bjorn on Monday, July 11 2005 @ 11:45 CET]
Ignition Entertainment's highly-rated action puzzler 'Archer Maclean's Mercury will be available on PlayStation®Portable as a first party title to be published by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) in August 2005 in Japan.

The game will be re-titled [Hg] Hydrium and will be slightly re-worked in order to meet Japanese tastes, but the core of the game will remain, ensuring Eastern players enjoy the game as much as their Western counterparts.

Computer and videogames.com said: "Mercury could and we don't say this lightly become Tetris for the PlayStation® generation, a thought echoed by Official PlayStation®2 Magazine, who proclaimed the game: "Really could be the new Tetris.

"From the beginning, we've always believed the game had real potential in the future of handheld entertainment, said Kaz Takeshita, Ignition Japan. "We're delighted Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has chosen it for a first-party distribution deal in Japan.E

Mercury is a fresh innovation in puzzle games. Providing an addictive challenge across its 72 levels, its simple gaming mechanic merely requires players to 'tiltEeach level in order to manoeuvre the blobs of mercury, with various switches, platforms, obstacles and hazards standing between level goals.

Powering Mercury is a ridiculously sophisticated engine which calculates every gloopy part of the liquid metal as it bends and melds around everything in its path. As the digitised mercury smoothly ebbs and flows under such simple controls, players experience the purest form of gaming imaginable.

Despite requiring no complicated controls, the game itself is grinningly taxing. Puzzle elements vary from needing to split the mercury into several coloured component parts each of which will be affected by the degree of tilt in order to open gates, activate switches, etc. The maze-like environments require lateral thinking in order to navigate the mercury from start to finish with the sprawling 3D levels often requiring devilish-yet-hit-yourself-when-you-work-it-out solutions.

[Hg] Hydrium will be published in Japan by SCEJ on 4th August 2005, priced 4,800 Yen.
System to add video games to a legal P2P
  [Category : General_News] [Posted by Bjorn on Monday, July 11 2005 @ 11:42 CET]
Wurld Media and Trymedia Systems today announced an agreement to make legitimate downloadable video games available to try and buy over the legal peer-to-peer network, Peer Impact. The deal will give Wurld Media access to one of the world’s largest catalogs of downloadable PC games, enabled by Trymedia’s patented ActiveMARK(TM) digital rights management (DRM) technologies.

For the first time, consumers will be able to both legally download PC games and earn cash back for sharing them through Wurld Media’s Peer Impact network. Currently in beta testing, Peer Impact is expected to have games available for download in the coming weeks.

“Trymedia’s catalogue has something for every type of gamer, and this partnership moves us further towards the goal of being a one-stop-shop for legal digital entertainment downloads,” said Gregory Kerber, chairman and CEO of Wurld Media. “This is the first agreement that we have announced outside of the music industry, and it reflects our commitment to developing the most diverse catalogue of legal, digital content available online.”

Trymedia manages a catalogue of more than 1,000 downloadable PC game titles from developers around the globe. Titles span across genres from casual games like “Diner Dash” and “Rock and Roll Jeopardy,” to the action-filled “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay” and fantasy role-playing games like “Warlords Battlecry III.” The majority of titles in the catalog are available for under $20. Trymedia’s ActiveMARK technology allows consumers to easily backup, play on multiple computers, and securely share their games. Most of Trymedia’s games are offered on a try-before-you-buy basis, providing consumers with a chance to test drive games before they commit to a purchase.

In 2002, Trymedia was the first company to post legitimate video games files on peer-to-peer networks. Today Trymedia’s vast distribution network provides legitimate downloadable game content across the Internet, including to major ISPs and portals here in the U.S. and in Europe.

The first legal peer-to-peer service to gain the support of all the major music labels, Peer Impact features a growing catalogue of pristine content. In addition to music and video games, Wurld Media is working to add content in the areas of motion pictures and audio books. Peer Impact users can earn cash back by acting as paid redistributors of legal content purchased through the network. Members simply leave their computers on, and if they are used as a source of fulfillment for purchases through the network, they are reimbursed with credit towards future purchases.
