SEGA's new VC Wii games for North America
[Category : Revolution] [Posted by Bjorn on Friday, March 30 2007 @ 15:26 CET]
SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that four titles from the SEGA Genesis™ library, Sword of Vermilion, Sonic Spinball, and Beyond Oasis are now available for download on the Wii™ Shop Channel. Prices start at 800 Wii™ Points for SEGA Genesis titles. Wii Points can be purchased online or at select retailers at an MSRP of $20 for 2,000 points.

Sword of Vermilion - When the evil wizard-king, Tsarkon, invaded Excalabria, King Erik V had no choice but to turn his infant son over to his most trusted warrior, Blade. As his castle burned, King Erik hurriedly gave Blade an ancient family heirloom, the Ring of Wisdom, and asked him to leave at once in the hopes that the young heir to the throne would survive. Blade raised Erik VI as his own, knowing one day the prince would fulfill the prophecy of the Malaga fortune tellers. Now, eighteen years later, Erik VI returns to Excalabria to avenge his father’s death and reclaim the kingdom.

Sonic Spinball - With his Veg-O-Fortress built high up on an active volcano, Dr. Eggman is turning all the cute, furry creatures of Planet Mobius into robot slaves! Sonic and Tails rush to save the animals and quickly discover the only way to stop the mechanizing madness is to trigger a volcanic eruption. Sonic knows this can be done by removing the Chaos Emeralds that keep the volcano stable. However, Dr. Eggman is also aware of the fragile relationship that exists between the Emeralds and the mountain, and he's set up an elaborate Pinball Defense System to make sure the precious jewels don't go anywhere.

Beyond Oasis - You are the young Prince Ali in a desperate fight to defeat the evil that has returned to threaten your island empire, Oasis. Long ago, a war raged between a wicked sorcerer who used a silver “armlet” to unleash destruction on the island and a wizard who defied him with a gold armlet that could summon four powerful spirits. Both armlets had been lost until recently when someone unearthed the silver band and began using it for their evil gain. Just when you think all is lost, you discover the precious gold armlet and finally have the power to combat the wearer of the silver band…but can you stop them in time?

It’s time to put on your thinking cap and prepare to immerse yourself in fun and addictive puzzles as Picross DS launches across Europe only on Nintendo DS. Players will have to have speedy fingers and even faster minds to conquer the many puzzles available. Picross DS will offer the ultimate in light puzzle entertainment, only for the Nintendo DS when it launches on 11th May.

In the game’s main Picross Mode players must reveal a hidden image that lies beneath the puzzle by filling in a grid with squares and crosses to complete patterns. Variety is the spice of life and Picross DS does not disappoint with a staggering 300 puzzles available to play at your leisure. These games range from the elementary five by five grids, to highly complicated twenty by twenty grids which will keep even the most hardened gamer happy. Finishing all these challenges will keep you busy for weeks. There is no need to worry if you get stuck by one of the more devious challenges as you can opt to receive clues to help finish puzzles as well as give yourself a head start with a roulette style hint function that reveals one line of the puzzle.

Once the main game is mastered the puzzling action is by no means over. My Picross mode allows players to create their very own puzzles to challenge or share with friends. Using the Nintendo DS stylus and easy-to-use touch-screen, players can design Picross DS puzzles of all sizes. What’s more they can even design the image beneath the puzzle which is released upon its completion. Once created these puzzles can be shared with friends using the Nintendo DS wireless connectivity or the Wi-Fi Connection service.

For Players looking for a quick distraction on a regular basis Picross DS features a calendar based Daily Picross mode where players are challenged to take on several quick puzzles every day. The fun and addictive puzzles in this mode all feature the smallest five by five grids and are designed to see how quickly players can analyse and complete five small puzzles. Each days results are then plotted on a chart that shows the player’s progress over time. Playing Daily Picross DS mode for periods of consecutive days will unlock all new modes including No X’s, Error Search, and Memory.

Picross DS also allows users to fully customise their game environments to suit their tastes with a variety of different skins available to unlock, with themes ranging from nature to sporting or video game heroes. Microsoft announce new BLACK Xbox360 ELITE !
  [Category : Hardware_News] [Posted by Bjorn on Wednesday, March 28 2007 @ 8:12 CET]
The so many rumors are finally going to be true since Microsoft has finally announced that a "NEW" Xbox 360 console will see the light, probably in April called "Xbox 360 Elite".

While we haven't received anything yet official from Microsoft Benelux, website Engadget provided the 'first' information on this new "black only" console.

Bad news is that the console won't be ANY cheaper and it won't have a HD-DVD drive nor Wi-Fi. The HD-DVD drive won't show up in black as well so you still have to get the white version.

The good news is that "finally", it has a 120 GB HDD and HDMI support. Price, around $479 and for a solo 120 GB HDD you'll have to pay $179.

If you get a solo 120 GB HDD to replace the old 20 GB HDD, a transfer cable will be included so you can transfer all your personal data from one HDD to another.

The Xbox 360 ELITE will come with a HDMI cable, component and composite. Controller will be wireless (black) and a black headset will be wired.
Even black rechargeable batteries and a black Play & Charge kit will be available for the same price as the white versions.

There you have it! The Xbox 360 ELITE console will probably see the light in US and Canada on April 29th and at this moment, an European release hasn't been made but we might give Microsoft Benelux a call for more information.

Bust-A-Move bubbles onto Nintendo Wii in May
[Category : Revolution] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, March 27 2007 @ 13:37 CET]
Ready your bubble, take aim and prepare to bust, as publisher 505 Games today announces the May 11th release of Bust-A-Move on Nintendo Wii.

The internationally beloved puzzle phenomenon makes its next-gen debut exclusively on Wii and is bursting at the seams with features, modes and of course a whole new way to play, using the Wii remote.

Bust-A-Move offers simple puzzle gameplay that’s easy to pick up and play but that also has enough strategy and depth to reward master players. Players must use the cannon at the bottom of the playing screen to fire coloured bubbles into similarly coloured bubbles at the top of the field. These bubbles advance down towards the player at regular intervals and if they reach the bottom it’s ‘game over’! Mindstorm coming to Nintendo DS
  [Category : Nintendo_DS] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, March 27 2007 @ 13:36 CET]
Publisher 505 Games is pleased to announce that the next evolution in the popular ‘brain training’ phenomenon is headed for Nintendo DS on May 4th.

MinDStorm, from developer ASK Co. Ltd., takes brain exercise software to a new level and offers a whole raft of exciting new games, features and challenges – all designed specifically to stimulate and improve the player’s brain functions and most importantly, be fun to play in their own right.

Transform gaming curiosity into powerful thinking with MinDStorm. The game features ten distinct types of challenge for players, all of which are simple to pick up and play using the Nintendo DS stylus, touch screen and microphone. Each of MinDStorm’s challenges is designed to focus on enhancing the player’s reason, endurance, analysis, intuition or observation. Regardless of the type of game chosen, extended play results in improved overall brain function and enhanced memory.

A first for the brain training genre, MinDStorm throws additional challenges and problems into the mix. Players are rewarded with ever more complex riddles to solve as they do well in the main training mode. General knowledge and geography-based challenges are also included to accompany the more abstract trials such as sliding picture puzzles, mazes to navigate with the stylus and spot the difference games.

Further innovation is found in the way the game will adapt the tasks it asks players to perform according to the local environment it is being played in. When playing on a bumpy car or train ride for instance, MinDStorm will omit the tasks that require precise stylus action. When playing in public the game will spare players the need to vocalize into the Nintendo DS microphone. With its many innovative and exciting challenges and features, MinDStorm offers arguably the most thorough workout yet seen in a brain training title.

MinDStorm releases for Nintendo DS on May 4th, priced around £30.

More on PS3 Firmware v1.60 update
  [Category : PlayStation3] [Posted by Bjorn on Thursday, March 22 2007 @ 17:19 CET]
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced that the next regular system software update for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system (version 1.60) will be available March 22, delivering features such as Folding@home connectivity, enhanced downloading of content from the PLAYSTATION®Store, support for Bluetooth® keyboards and mice, and an optional full QWERTY on-screen keyboard for text entry.

Folding@home
Beginning Thursday, PS3 users will be able to connect to Stanford University’s Folding@home program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and many cancers. Using the power of the Cell Broadband Engine™, the PS3 system can perform computer simulations for the Folding@home program 20-30 times faster than the average home PC. Once a PS3 system is updated to version 1.60, users can easily sign up to join the Folding@home program by clicking on the associated logo on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) under the Network icon. The user is then able to link to a distributed network of PS3s, conducting simulations and sending them back to a central computer at Stanford University for compilation and analysis. Additional details about Folding@home are available at http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/.

Enhanced Downloading
Firmware version 1.60 delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. PS3 users will now be able to queue up to six downloads at one time. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMB’s Network icon. In addition, content will be able to be downloaded in the background while using some PS3 system features, such as accessing the XMB to display videos and photos from the system’s hard drive, playing music, and browsing the Web. Please refer to http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates for full information on this feature.

Text Entry and Web Browsing
Firmware 1.60 also will support keyboards and mice enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology. Text entry is further expanded with the option to use a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard, in addition to the existing single tap keyboard. PS3 system’s built-in Web browser will also be enhanced with the ability to zoom in to the optimal viewing size for the selected area of a Web page at the press of a button, as well as an optional tool for reducing flicker when the PS3 system is using interlaced video out (480i or 1080i).

Other Feature Upgrades
• Remote Play – This feature, enabling you to access photos, videos, and music on your PS3 system’s hard drive from a nearby PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system, will be available for the 20GB configuration, when utilizing an external Wi-Fi router or local wireless access point.
• Disc Auto-Start – This new option under System Settings allows you to choose whether or not a disc should start automatically upon inserting the disc or turning on your PS3 system.
• Blu-ray Disc Rewriteable (BD-RE) – PS3 system can now playback BD-RE discs (version 3.0).

“PS3 is constantly evolving with new features that keep the system at the cutting edge, thus unlocking its full potential,” said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing, SCEA. “This upcoming firmware update not only delivers capabilities that gamers are asking for, such as enhanced downloading, it also enables us to tap into the PS3 community for the Folding@home project, leveraging the power of PS3’s technology and the ever-expanding reach of our user base to help researchers find cures for diseases.”

The Con Release Date Confirmed
[Category : PSP] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, March 20 2007 @ 17:58 CET]
SouthPeak Games has confirmed that its innovative Sony PSP® fighting title, The Con, will be released in the UK on March 30th.

The Con combines a deep, tactically complex fighting engine with a unique gambling system and plenty of scope for player character customisation, making it one of the most distinctive fighting games to come to any format – handheld or otherwise.

Developed in Japan by Think And Feel Inc, The Con tells the story of a fighter indebted to an influential organiser of illegal street fights. The game’s objective is to make money through fighting, but all is not as it seems and not all fights are created equal.

In some clashes, the player will have to take their fare share of tactical losses as well as striving for pugilistic victory. This skewing of priorities is supported by a betting system that allows the player to gamble on either side winning each fight. This opens up new avenues for generating cash via subterfuge and feint as well as guile and technique, where making money may be more important than winning with honour.

The Con’s versatile fighting engine opens up tactical possibilities never seen before in a fighting game. Punches can be faked, guards can be deliberately lowered and dives to the floor can be initiated, making The Con the only game where losing a fight can benefit the player more than winning – provided it’s done convincingly. If the crowd don’t buy your performance, you’ll lose your winnings. Fights aren’t strictly a one-on-one affair, either. Battles can involve up to three fighters on each side.

The Con also provides a remarkable amount of player customisation. The player’s team of three characters can be moulded with an exemplary range of appearance-altering options. Physique, clothing and accessories are all up for modification and the ability to import photographs allows for an infinite number of player faces – familiar, famous or otherwise.

Also part of The Con’s complex package is the multiplayer mode, which takes a traditional route of providing one-on-one matches. Single-UMD game sharing is included, but players with two copies of The Con get the added benefit of being able to place unlocked items as a stake in their victory.

As part of the enhancements introduced for the UK release of The Con, players will find loading times have been shortened and tweaks have been made to the overall difficulty level.

European PS3 Compatibility Site Launches Early
  [Category : PlayStation3] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, March 20 2007 @ 17:56 CET]
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today launched the web site that will allow prospective PLAYSTATION®3 owners to see which of their PlayStation®2 titles are playable on the new European PS 3 hardware model.

The web site at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc lists those titles from the portfolio of PS2 titles available in the SCEE PAL territories that are playable on PS3.

"Our engineers have been working overtime, and have succeeded in delivering a significant number of playable PS2 titles for the European launch", said David Reeves, President of SCEE. "We will be adding additional titles to this list in future firmware upgrades, but as we have made clear before, in the future our resources will be increasingly focused on developing new services and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, rather than on delivering PS2 backwards compatibility.”

New owners of a European PS3 will need to install the latest firmware upgrade to play the PS2 titles listed on the web site. The upgrade will be available at launch from midnight on 22nd March through the PLAYSTATION®Network, from http://www. PlayStation.com or, for those unable to access the internet, on a disc obtained from local Customer Services.

The latest system software upgrade (Version 1.60) will deliver features such as Folding@home connectivity, background downloading of content from the PLAYSTATION®Store, support for Bluetooth® keyboards and mice, and an optional full QWERTY on-screen keyboard for text entry.

The Folding@home project allows PS3 owners to connect to Stanford University’s Folding@home program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and many cancers. Using the power of the Cell Broadband Engine™, PS3 system can perform computer simulations for the Folding@home program ten times faster than your average home PC. Once PS3 system is updated to version 1.60, users can easily sign up to join the Folding@home program by clicking on the appropriate logo on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) under the Network icon. Then, when the PS3 system is left on and reaches idle mode, it will automatically begin a simulation and, once completed, send information back to a central computer(*1). Additional details about Folding@home are available at http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/.

Firmware Version 1.60 also delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. Up to 6 pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMB’s Network icon(2).

Firmware 1.60 also provides support for keyboards and mice enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology. Text entry is further expanded with the option to use a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard, in addition to the existing single tap keyboard. PS3’s built-in Web browser is also enhanced with the ability to zoom in to the optimal viewing size for the selected area of a Web page at the press of a button, as well as an optional tool for reducing flicker when the PS3 system is using interlaced video out (480i or 1080i).
Codemasters announces Hei$t
[Category : Multiplatform] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, March 20 2007 @ 17:55 CET]
Kindly place your wallets, purses, jewellery and all other valuables in the swag bag as Codemasters announces HEI$T™ – an all-new job pullin', bank robbin' action-driving game set in a gritty San Francisco, circa 1969.

Currently in development at inXile Entertainment (The Bard's Tale, 2004), HEI$T™ has gamers taking charge of a group of renegade criminals as they rob, steal and shoot their way throughout the city, all the while their sights set on the big score: taking the San Francisco Mint. HEI$T™ is expected to ship Q4 2007, for next generation consoles and PC.

It's 1969, the summer of love in San Francisco. Enter Johnny Sutton, fresh out of jail and a descendant from a long line of big-time thieves, including his father who was gunned down during a job some years back. Playing as Johnny, and together with his Uncle Sal and reunited crew, players are set pull off dozens of heists that will inevitably make a name for him as the greatest bank robber of all time.

In addition to knocking off banks, each with their own set security precautions, throughout the city, players will be highly motivated to pull off further jobs. These include raiding bars, restaurants, strip clubs, armoured cars, and more in order to acquire the bigger and better tools needed to penetrate the increasingly more difficult banks.

And what great bank robbery is complete without ending in a hot pursuit police chase? After each hit, HEI$T™ will challenge players to make a quick getaway, speeding and screeching through the streets of San Francisco as the cops trail inches behind. The Fuzz will do everything within their means to prevent the great escape; they will bump and ram, form barricades, and attempt to force PIT maneuvers to spin the getaway vehicle out of control – always trying to keep civilian losses to a minimum of course.

"We designed HEI$T so that players feel like a part of the best robberies and car chases from classic movies," states Maxx Kaufman, Creative Director at inXile Entertainment. "Everything from the different types of jobs to pull and the reckless pursuits by the police through the streets of San Francisco, to the sarcastic banter back and forth between the members of the crew, gives HEI$T the action and style of the great attitude and rock-driven films of the 60's."

Prepare to lead a bunch of renegade criminals and run riot in an 1960s open world when HEI$T™ is published by Codemasters in Q4 2007.

U.S. Wii strongest console in February
  [Category : General_News] [Posted by Bjorn on Friday, March 16 2007 @ 11:34 CET]
According to independent sales data released by the NPD Group, the Wii™ from Nintendo was America's best-selling video game console in the U.S. again in February, with consumers snapping up virtually every system available in America totaling more than 335,000 units.

Only one game system sold more in February, the portable Nintendo DS™, with sell-through of 485,000 units.

Together, Nintendo systems represented 54 percent of all hardware sales in February, more than those of all other manufacturers combined.

"We're gratified that the explosive appeal of Wii, in terms of both new players and new ways to play, has created unprecedented demand, substantially beyond supply," says Reggie Fils-Aime, president, Nintendo of America. "But we also understand that there are hundreds of thousands of consumers still waiting to get their hands on the system so we continue to both ship more units to retail every week and work non-stop to build capacity."

Reports from households across the country indicate that Wii has become the centerpiece for weekend parties a new method for improving athletic technique and losing weight, and a landmark product for generating cross-generational fun.

The strength of Wii and Nintendo DS was also apparent in monthly software sales where three of the top four best-selling games for the month (Wii Play™ and The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess for Wii, and Diddy Kong® Racing DS for Nintendo DS) play exclusively on Nintendo systems. In addition, so far this year 10 of the top 20 best-selling games are exclusive for Nintendo hardware.

This week Wii takes you back to the classic old-school era with a selection of action-packed titles which will have your heart pounding and hands sweating in minutes.

Nintendo fans will remember the charms of Ice Climber™ from the Nintendo Entertainment System. Players take control of a small Eskimo who, armed only with a hammer, must make his way up an icy mountain, breaking blocks to make new routes and defeating enemies which block his way. With perilous black-ice, deviously placed indestructible blocks and challenging time limits, this game will have you on the edge of your seat.

Next in this week’s tour of 1980s culture we travel from the arctic mountains to the sewers of New York where we meet four bright green 80s ninjitsu legends in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles®. Again making its debut on the NES, this game requires players to battle through five large stages to foil a criminal plot threatening the city. Players can switch between their favourite Turtles at any time during the game allowing you to pick the ideal pizza-eating reptile for every situation.

Finally, challenge your nerve and take on the game which gave birth to the survival horror genre with Splatter House™ originally for Turbografx. Following a storm, the hero and his girlfriend take shelter in a creepy mansion. When our hero wakes the next morning his girlfriend is gone and a hockey mask is stuck on his head, giving him superhuman strength. Using this new-found power, players must hack and slash their way through seven levels full of undead and save their girlfriend from the evil which has taken control of this house.
New Maelstrom multiplayer demo

Experience the destructive strategy action of Maelstrom, the RTS title from KDV Games, in the new multiplayer PC playable demo now available to download from www.codemasters.com/maelstrom.

With organic bases, terraforming and totally destructible environments, the new demo enables players to sample two new multiplayer maps; also playable in single-player mode.

In the first two-player map, “Top of the Hill”, players command either the resourceful Remnants or the fearless Hai-Genti alien force in a race to destroy the opposition enemy base. The first to the summit controls the water pump at the top of the hill so strategic terraforming and dam building will be crucial for the Remnants to save their base from possible flooding by the aquatic aliens.

The second four-player map, “Lair of the Devil”, enables players to again compete as either the human guerrilla fighting Remnants or the collective hive-mind of the Hai-Genti aliens. This map is a barren and volcanic vision of the future, one of the 14 multiplayer maps available in the full game.

Developed by KDV Games, Maelstrom is published by Codemasters and is now available for PC.

Three New Classic Games For Wii Shop Channel
[Category : Revolution] [Posted by Bjorn on Monday, March 12 2007 @ 16:53 CET]
Today Nintendo adds three new classic games for North America to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Tecmo Bowl™ (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Tecmo Bowl pits the player versus the computer in 11-game, single-elimination playoff action. Players also can go head-to-head with a human opponent in action or coach mode. The player can select from 12 teams. On offense there are usually two run and two pass plays to choose from. The player takes control of the quarterback before the snap and then either hands off to the running back or works through his receiver progression from the top to the bottom of the screen. Defense consists of trying to guess which offensive play the opponent will select and then taking control of one of the defensive players before the snap. A very simple power-meter system is used for kicking field goals, extra points and punts.

Sonic Spinball™ (Sega Genesis, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points): Dr. Eggman (aka Dr. Robotnik) has taken over Mt. Mobius and turned it into a mechanical base. He is using energy from the magma flowing under the volcano to power his Veg-O-Fortress. He has the power to transform helpless animals into robots. Sonic the Hedgehog must take down this fortress to free the enslaved animals. The only way to make that happen is to trigger an eruption in the volcano it's built on. Sonic knows this can be done by removing the Chaos Emeralds that keep the volcano stable. Dr. Eggman, however, is also aware of the fragile relationship that exists between the emeralds and the mountain, and he's set up an elaborate Pinball Defense System to make sure the precious jewels don't go anywhere.

Double Dungeons (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points): Double Dungeons is a dungeon role-playing game that features smooth-scrolling 3-D game play. Two players can play at the same time, which makes this game truly stand out from the rest. There are 22 unique scenarios, spread out among six levels. The higher the level is, the harder the scenario. Because each scenario is independent, players can choose to start the game from any scenario other than the final one. Players defeat monsters in each dungeon to gain experience while searching for the "key" that opens the door to the room with the boss. They buy equipment at the shop, team up with characters and defeat the boss to clear a scenario. Players must conquer all 21 scenarios from levels 1 through 5 to obtain passwords. If they obtain all of them, they make their way to the final scenario!
