Pathologic coming to the UK in March
[Category : PC] [Posted by Bjorn on Thursday, February 23 2006 @ 22:01 CET]
GMX Media are today announcing that they will be releasing the horror adventure title Pathologic for PC CD-ROM in the UK in March 2006. The game has been licensed from BUKA Entertainment and developed by Ice-pick Lodge. GMX Media will be publishing and distributing the title in the UK.

Pathologic is a unique type of adventure game designed to affect the emotional and psychological state of the player in a way that no other PC game has achieved.

The story begins in a place called the Ancient Steppe when a strange town appears from nowhere. Seeming to be a small drover settlement , the mysterious, isolated establishment has managed to survive for several generations. It could have continued to grow, were it not for a sudden outbreak of some kind of lethal disease, which begins to mercilessly slaughter the denizens inhabiting the area. Even science has proven helpless in finding a cure, or at least providing some explanation.

Three outsiders arrive at the contaminated town. The first is a highly-educated Bachelor with a ruthless manner of investigation, assigned by the provincial authorities. The second is a far-sighted Ripper with a reputation as an ingenious surgeon, in search of his father's terrible heritage. The last character is an eccentric girl, possessing mystic healing abilities, that could become the town's heavenly salvation were it not for fresh memory of the horrors of her recent past...

Each of them must survive in this hell and play a vital role in the fate of the town... one of them could be you.

The atmosphere of the game reproduces the tense feeling of danger at every turn. You'll witness dreadful images of city in agony, incessant death of the infected and the dramatic tragedies of the doomed people...

Sci-Fi screenwriter writes storyline for Maelstrom
  [Category : General_News] [Posted by Bjorn on Friday, February 17 2006 @ 11:28 CET]
Codemasters is tapping into experienced screenwriting talent to create the backdrop for its futuristic strategy action epic Maelstrom, coming Q3 exclusively for PC.

When it launches the game will not just have the action and characters of a science-fiction blockbuster movie, but will also feature a gripping scenario devised by James Swallow, an experienced science fiction screenwriter whose previous credits include Star Trek: Voyager and Doctor Who.

"I'm excited to be a part of the Maelstrom project," says Swallow, "We have a dynamic and compelling plotline, epic scope and strong characters. As the game unfolds, the conflicts between the factions and the characters within them become the flashpoints for player missions, and what begins as a battle to live another day soon becomes a global fight for survival, with the player at the heart of the action."

Says Carl Johnson, Maelstrom's game designer at Codemasters:
"The story in Maelstrom is hugely important; it doesn't just set the tone and atmosphere, but it also ties directly into the game mechanics, to give the player a better understanding of each faction and how they play. The story follows the apocalypse that has befallen Earth and provides the player with a greater understanding of the motivations behind each of the game's three factions, the origins of the technology for each side, and the reasons behind the conflict."

In Opera's agreement with Nintendo, Nintendo DS users will now be able to surf the full Internet from their systems using the Opera browser. The Opera browser for Nintendo DS will be sold as a DS card. Users simply insert the card into the Wi-Fi enabled Nintendo DS, connect to a network, and begin browsing on two screens.

Earlier this year, Nintendo reported that 13 million Nintendo DS systems were sold to consumers around the world within just 13 months of its debut in November 2004. Nintendo DS combines unique dual screens, touch screen, voice recognition and wireless and Wi-Fi communications capabilities. According to an independent market research company in Japan, Nintendo DS has become the fastest selling video games machine to top the 6 million sales mark in Japan in just over 14 months since its Japanese debut, breaking the old record held by Nintendo's Game Boy Advance.

"The incredibly popular Nintendo DS is already Wi-Fi enabled to support real-time gaming, so adding Web browsing capabilities was a natural evolution for this device," says Scott Hedrick, Executive Vice President, Opera Software. "Gaming devices are growing more advanced and a great Web experience is becoming a product differentiator for gaming manufacturers. Opera is excited to work with Nintendo to deliver a unique dual screen, full Internet experience on Nintendo DS."

With an on-screen keypad and stylus, users can easily navigate the Web from their Nintendo DS with PDA-like functionality. Based on the same core as the Opera desktop browser, Opera delivers superior speed and rendering of Web pages on the Nintendo DS.

"Within just five seconds of turning on the system, the Nintendo DS is already fully operational. This makes it the ideal device to enable people to swiftly obtain the latest information from the internet, wherever they are," says Masaru Shimomura, Deputy General Manager of Nintendo's R & D Department. "Opera exceeded our expectations with its user friendly interface, quick access to all your favorite sites, ease of use and, most importantly, in making the best use of the Nintendo DS system's unique double screens and touch screen features. Opera is an important partner for Nintendo in our efforts to further expand the users of the Nintendo DS."

Nintendo Co., Ltd. held a presentation today in Tokyo, Japan, to announce updates for the Nintendo DS. Information on the availability of the Opera browser DS card has not yet been announced.

Nintendo DS Offers Bold New Features
  [Category : Nintendo_DS] [Posted by Bjorn on Friday, February 10 2006 @ 15:15 CET]
The video games industry's "story of the year" for 2005 is growing even more compelling early in 2006, as Nintendo today announced major new initiatives for its hot-selling Nintendo DS portable game system.

In a matter of weeks: DS owners will sample free games simply by visiting their local game retailers; players will enjoy live, real-time Wi-Fi voice interaction with their portable game play; the 1 millionth DS owner will log onto Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo's wireless gaming service; and a new lighter, brighter DS will make its debut in Japan.

Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing, announced the new DS features during his keynote address today at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' D.I.C.E. conference in Las Vegas.

"Nintendo DS was the only video game system that exceeded expectations in 2005, simply because it dared to be different," Fils-Aime said. "By further enriching the ways in which players can compete, play and sample new games, that process is accelerating in the opening weeks of 2006."

Here are the details announced at the D.I.C.E. conference:

DS Download Service: Starting next month, Nintendo will offer all DS owners free downloadable game demos and other downloadable content at thousands of participating retail locations around the United States. An in-store kiosk will beam wireless demo versions of games and other downloadable content into a players' Nintendo DS system. Users simply stop by the store with their Nintendo DS, click "DS Download Play" on their system and choose one of a variety of DS games they want to sample. The game will download automatically and users can play all they want (even if they leave the store) until the Nintendo DS is turned off.

Sequentially, players can try out as many games as they want, letting them test drive the wide array of games that can only be played on Nintendo DS. The first DS Download Service stations will include free demos of Tetris® DS, Brain AgeTM: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, Mario Kart® DS, MeteosTM, True Swing Golf and Pokémon® Trozei, along with a Metroid® Prime Hunters video clip. The selection of games and other downloadable content at DS Download Service kiosks will refresh quarterly.

Metroid Chat: The new Metroid Prime Hunters game for Nintendo DS will give gamers the ability to chat directly with one another before and after matches played via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Players in North America simply click the chat icon and say what they have to say. The microphone of the Nintendo DS picks up voice communication and transmits it to the people on their friend list. Players can use the chat function before a match to agree on settings or after a battle to relive their glories. This Teen-rated first-person adventure arrives March 20 and promises to open a dramatically fun new facet of gaming to Nintendo fans.

Nintendo DS Lite: The lighter, brighter Nintendo DS system goes on sale in Japan next month. Nintendo DS Lite is about two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more than 20 percent lighter. Its availability in other regions will be announced at a later date.

Atari announced today that Tycoon City: New York, the PC game that challenges players to build the business empire of their dreams and "make it big" in Manhattan, has gone gold and is on schedule for release across Europe on February 24. In Tycoon City: New York, players aim to become moguls by constructing and customising hundreds of businesses anywhere and any way they want in a bustling and realistic simulation of New York City. Players must create and improve their businesses to outclass the competition and become rich and famous in New York City.

New York City is recreated in highly detailed 3D and features such famous landmarks as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and Times Square. Over two dozen in-game partners, including TIME Magazine, Toys'R'Us, Virgin Megastore, Staples, Olympus, Marquee, Nokia, Tag Heuer, and D'Agostino's, to name a few, lend the game added realism. As a result of the partnership with TIME Magazine, players that reach the top of their game will see their likeness promoted on virtual TIME Magazine billboards throughout the city.

Challenges include running a nightclub, owning a hot new restaurant chain, and opening a Broadway theatre. High-profile industries, real-world brands, and a bustling round-the-clock lifestyle give every player the chance to make it. All of these challenges take place in authentic New York neighbourhoods like the East Village, Chelsea and Greenwich Village.

Tycoon City: New York is being developed by Deep Red Games and will launch for the Windows platform on 24 February 2006 across Europe.
Premium Xbox Live content for Star War BF II
  [Category : General_News] [Posted by Bjorn on Thursday, February 2 2006 @ 12:20 CET]
Now at more than 4 million copies sold across all four available platforms (PlayStation 2, Xbox, PlayStation Portable and PC), Star Wars Battlefront II was the No. 2 best-selling videogame of 2005, according to NPD Funworld. It’s also – in less than three months of availability – the new best-selling Star Wars game of all time. On Tuesday, January 31, LucasArts releases a large dose of premium content for owners of the Xbox version, downloadable via Xbox Live.

For only $4.99, Xbox players who purchase Battlefront II’s downloadable premium content gain two new playable hero characters (Jedi Kit Fisto and the evil Asajj Ventress) as well as four of their favorite maps from the original Star Wars Battlefront. Each of the downloadable maps – including Yavin 4 (Arena), Bespin (Cloud City) and two on icy Rhen Var (Harbor and Citadel) – boasts bonus modes of Conquest, Capture-the-Flag and Assault (a good-versus-evil hero free-for-all that includes the new characters and other heroes already in the game in one Force-ful battle royale). Assault modes have also been added to the preexisting maps on Coruscant, Mygeeto and Naboo, and Rhen Var’s Harbor map includes an additional Hunt mode featuring wampa ice creatures.

The new locations and heroes enable Star Wars fans to relive some of their favorite heroic confrontations, as well – this time with entire armies backing them. On Bespin, Luke Skywalker takes on Darth Vader as seen in The Empire Strikes Back. Meanwhile, as depicted in Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series, Anakin Skywalker goes up against Asajj Ventress in the jungles of Yavin 4. Count Dooku’s protégé even comes equipped with an exciting new weapon – two lightsabers attached with a fibercord.
