Black Bean delivers The Day After to Europe

Black Bean and 1C Company are proud to present a totally new gaming experience, developed in Russia by G5 Software; The Day After is the first game to successfully combine the realism of Turn Based Strategy with the dynamics of Real Time Strategy. This title introduces a special operative mode, which enhances the strategic decision making process, thus taking it to a new level and allowing the player to carefully plan his actions in turn based mode then implement them on the battlefield.
The game transports you to the frontline; with your maps laid out you can strategically place your forces, group them and position them for attack. In characteristic turn based strategy mode, each turn is limited adding an extra touch of realism to the experience. Non-critical elements like optional missions add to the depth of game play.
The Day After offers a deeply satisfying strategy experience with a great deal of combat logistics involved. The player needs to consider many various factors like available fuel resources, positioning of close-by enemy airfields and the remaining amount of moves in order to complete missions successfully.
The Day After will be released in France, UK, Italy, Spain and Germany in May 2005 in a Limited Edition box featuring a 80 page full colour manual and a multimedia encyclopaedia that will describe all the vehicles included in the game.

Survival makes for strange bedfellows in Atari's new paranormal thriller, Fahrenheit, being developed by Quantic Dream for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Xbox® video game system from Microsoft and personal computer. Set in near future New York City, Fahrenheit tells the story of a man whose destiny is irrevocably altered when he unwillingly commits a brutal murder and to find the truth must partner with the woman assigned to bring him to justice.
"Fahrenheit represents a real milestone in the development of video gaming and the adventure genre, with genuinely innovative design and a chilling atmosphere to match that of some of the most successful big screen psychological thrillers," said Martin Spiess, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Atari Europe. "Quantic Dream have created a game where the tension seeps from the screen into the mind, guaranteeing no shortage of emotional investment from the player. A powerful connection is created between the player and the action on-screen, where every turn and every micro-decision has serious consequences."
In Fahrenheit, New York City is stunned by a series of mysterious murders, all following the same pattern: ordinary people are killing absolute strangers in public areas. Lucas Kane becomes another one of these murderers when he suddenly kills a stranger in a men's washroom. Covered in blood, Lucas regains consciousness with no recollection as to why he committed the murder. Hunted by police, Lucas must solve the mystery before being caught and incarcerated for life.
A free-flowing game during which players can assume the role of multiple characters and experience the game from multiple viewpoints, Fahrenheit allows players' actions to affect the plot by offering a scenario driven interactive experience. Through motion picture techniques such as actor direction, multi-camera views, motion tracking and a contextual music score, players find themselves intimately immersed in the game.
Developed by Quantic Dream for the PlayStation2, Xbox and PC, Fahrenheit is scheduled for release in September 2005. More information about the game can be found online at www.fahrenheitgame.com.

PlayDevil reviews Donkey Konga (GC)

Today we have placed the review of Nintendo's Bongo game, Donkey Konga.
Here's a snip from the review:Over the past years we have seen many dancing games. We played Samba de Amigo on Sega's Dreamcast, Dance Dance Revolution on PS2 and many others on different systems.
The addition of an interactive controller is nice and entertaining but it all depends if the game is good made or not. What I mean with good made is "did the developer create an unique dancing music game and was the console used at maximum capacity". In order to compete with other dancing games this was a must.

Magazine Coop for Metal Gear Solid 3

Some of Europe’s most popular magazines will make cameo appearances in Konami of Europe’s forthcoming Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater epic for PlayStation 2.
Series Director and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has hidden five European magazines around the game’s stunningly realistic stages. Thus, with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater utilizing a jungle setting, a barren cave system and guard huts amongst its many graphically resplendent locations, players will have to keep their eyes open to find copies of a selection of well-known magazines.
As such, as users guide the game’s central hero, Snake, through enemy bases, they could stumble across discarded copies of gaming titles such as Super Play (Sweden), PSM2 (France), Play2mania (Spain), or Germany’s news magazine Stern (with a cover design from 1964), or the Dutch TV and lifestyle magazine, Veronica.
With the game now confirmed for a March 3rd launch across Europe, interest in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is growing at a phenomenal rate. Konami has already announced that PAL versions of the game will benefit from several new game modes, including an ‘Extreme’ difficulty setting, a Boss ‘Duel’ mode wherein players can take on the game’s many key adversaries one by one, or a ‘Demo Theatre’ mode to sit back and enjoy Kojima’s beautiful scene-setting sequences in order.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is released for PlayStation 2 on March 3rd, 2005.

Street Racing Syndicate coming soon for Euro GameCube

The lights are green as SRS - Street Racing Syndicate screeches onto the Nintendo GameCube in the UK on 4 March 2005. In this high-octane racing adventure players can push over forty officially licensed cars to the limits around the streets of three major US cities. SRS - Street Racing Syndicate for Nintendo GameCube will be distributed by Nintendo of Europe. Namco are the publishers and it is developed by Eutechnyx.
Players can choose from over forty performance cars, from seven well-known manufacturers, including favourites such as the Mitsubishi Evolution VIII, Subaru Impreza S202 and Volkswagen Golf VR6. To give themselves an extra edge, players can modify their car with a selection of aftermarket tuning and body-styling products. Once their ride is suitably 'pimped-up', players get to freely roam the streets of Philadelphia, Miami and Los Angeles in search of other street racers to challenge. Money won from racing can be used to buy more cars, better parts or simply to refill on Nitrous.
Street racing is not just about speed, it is about respect! In SRS - Street Racing Syndicate it is important that your ride is not just fast, but that it also looks the part. Officially licensed aftermarket products can be purchased to improve your car's styling and make your ride the envy of your rivals. By clearing races and challenges the player earns respect points, unlocking more challenges and race events.
The modification system offers a huge selection of products from real tuning companies for each of the vehicles on offer. Street Racing Syndicate lets players tailor the look, performance, handling and sound of their car to suit their individual tastes. For racing fans the inclusion of the Dyno is an excellent addition to the game. The Dyno is a device enabling the player to measure the effect of any enhancements made to your car.
To earn a little extra income it is also possible to place cash bets on a race, the winner takes all. For risk-takers it's a great way to boost earnings and feed their NOS habit, but risk too much and you could end up walking home with an empty wallet.
No street racer's car would be complete without a gorgeous girl in the passenger seat! SRS- Street Racing Syndicate does not disappoint. As well as exploring the cities, players can complete special challenges to win the affections of eighteen girls: real models from the American cruise scene rendered and ready to reward the player's skills by unlocking their own special videos.
With the addition of four Arcade racing modes for that quick racing fix and a two player multiplayer mode, SRS - Street Racing Syndicate is looking likely to take the chequered flag when it launches on Nintendo GameCube on 4 March 2005 for the estimated retail price of around £40.

Gamers will play as Ethan Thomas, an FBI agent in the Serial Crimes Unit (SCU), whose pursuit of relentless serial killers leads him through detailed urban environments filled with deadly sociopaths who lurk on the periphery of humanity.
"SEGA expects Condemned to engage the game player with visceral, in-your-face, urban combat and an unparalleled level of unpredictability," said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president of entertainment marketing, SEGA of America. "The atmospheric tension and cinematic qualities of Condemned offer consumers the rich experience of a psychological thriller; something that has not been accomplished on previous hardware platforms."
"To become a leading independent game publisher, we must reinvigorate the SEGA brand by publishing great content that boosts revenue across all western territories," said Simon Jeffery, president and COO, SEGA of America. "Condemned represents an aggressive product acquisition strategy created to compliment SEGA IP with market-appropriate next-generation games."
"New leaps in technology are allowing our teams to create immersive game environments that are incredibly realistic," said Samantha Ryan, CEO of Monolith Productions. "Monolith's goal with Condemned, is to combine a disturbing atmosphere with realistic physics, devious AI, and a sophisticated combat system."
Condemned, the first next-generation console and PC game announced by SEGA, is slated to ship in Winter 2005.
Microsoft Announces Power Cord Replacement for Xbox

As a precautionary measure and out of concern for consumer safety, Microsoft announced today that it will voluntarily replace the power cords on 14.1 million Xbox consoles worldwide.
The replacement power cords are designed to protect consumers and their Xbox consoles from rare electrical component failures that can pose a fire hazard. Fewer than one in 10,000 consoles have experienced these component failures, and in almost all instances, any damage caused by these failures was contained within the console itself or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back of the console.
However, in 30 consoles worldwide, these failures are reported to have caused minor injury or minor property damage. In seven instances, customers reported sustaining a minor burn to their hand. In 23 instances, customers reported smoke damage, or minor damage to a carpet or entertainment centre.
In all regions except Continental Europe, Xbox consoles manufactured before 23rd October, 2003 require a replacement power cord. In Continental Europe, consoles manufactured before 13th January, 2004 require a replacement power cord.
"This is a preventative step we're choosing to take despite the rarity of these incidents," said Robbie Bach, senior vice president, Microsoft Home & Entertainment Division. "We regret the inconvenience, but believe offering consumers a free replacement cord is the responsible thing to do."
To order a replacement cord, consumers should go to www.xbox.com and click on the "Power Cord Replacement for Xbox" link. Replacement cords will arrive two to four weeks after the order is placed. While waiting for the new cord to arrive, consumers should turn off their Xbox consoles when not in use.

Eidos, one of the world's leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, announces their first title for Sony's handheld video game system, PSPTM with Smart Bomb. Developed by Core Design, Smart Bomb will be released in conjunction with the European PSP hardware launch.
Smart Bomb delivers a tense gameplay experience as players are faced with a series of fast paced, challenging 3D puzzles based around diffusing sophisticated AI bombs. Gamers are faced with a series of bomb modules split into tiers and each tier must be disabled to unlock the next. As a tier is disabled the player moves closer to the detonator at the core of the bomb which must be deactivated before moving onto a new challenge. Single player action includes story, arcade and challenge modes while multiplayer mode challenges four players in a series of head to head gaming action.
A decade ago, an unknown aggressor held the world to ransom with a series of highly sophisticated AI bombs planted at key locations around the globe. In response, the Global Defence Network assembled an elite reaction force – the Bomb Disposal Unit (B.D.U.) to neutralise the threat and restore order.
Led by Colonel Cage and rookie Michelle Grace, the B.D.U successfully diffuse these advanced AI networks and bombs, using a cutting edge prototype Virtual Reality (VR) system. Cage then mysteriously vanishes amid speculation that the VR system has malfunctioned. At the same time the bomb threats cease. That is, until now!
The civilised world is again under threat following the discovery of a new intricate network of bombs, displaying the same 'intelligent' detonator system found on the devices deactivated by B.D.U team just before Cage's disappearance. Cage's, protégée Michelle Grace, having risen through the ranks of the B.D.U is now one of the top field operatives. She will be responsible for your VR system training and development. It is then up to you to put a stop to this new reign of terror.

We have posted an very 'updated' review of Nintendo's "Pikmin 2".
The game is already out for a few months here in Europe but our review was not complete. That's why we have isolated our reviewer and put him to work for a more detailed and updated review of this game.
The result? A longer and much richer game review.
Here's a snip: In order to freshen-up the sequel (otherwise it would be more of the same), Nintendo was smart enough to include several new types of Pikmin in "Pikmin 2".
It helps its replay value and it opens a much wider world of doing more with the game. More objects, more new ideas and definitely more strategic missions.
You can read the "updated" review of Pikmin 2 right here.

Oregon-based NaturalPoint® Inc.'s TrackIR 3™ with Vector Expansion™ is a high-performance head tracking system that is the standard by which 3D view control is measured. This small, easy to use device makes your GT car cockpit come to life.
Drive Like Never Before
What makes the GTR implementation of Vector Expansion™ so revolutionary is the ability to manipulate the 3D environment in all six degrees, also known as "six degrees of freedom" or “6DOF”. As the driver you can now move your virtual head just like your own head. With the TrackIR 3™ you can move your monitor sight from left to right, up and down, simply by turning your head. With Vector Expansion™ this feature has been taken to the next level so the gamer can lean left/right, slide forward/backward, raise or lower the head and even tilt it to any angle. This will give everyone the racing advantage needed to be the winner. Lap times will improve and there will be far fewer crashes due to the increased situational awareness that Vector Expansion™ offers. Until now, leaning into the turn or looking around the steering wheel had been impossible in a racing simulation. By bringing TrackIR 3™ with Vector Expansion™ and GTR together, every race enthusiast get the most satisfying and realistic sim-racing experience possible. You will encounter situational awareness like never before, have view control like never before and with GTR you will race like never before!

Interactive Entertainment, is developing and publishing THE MATRIX: PATH OF NEO, an interactive console and PC game based on the blockbuster motion picture trilogy THE MATRIX, THE MATRIX RELOADED and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS from Warner Bros. Pictures. THE MATRIX: PATH OF NEO is slated for worldwide release in Q4 2005 and will be available on the PlayStation®2 entertainment system, the Xbox® videogame system from Microsoft, and the PC.

Set in the Matrix universe, THE MATRIX: PATH OF NEO will enable players to actually play as “Neo,” the central character, and relive his most important and memorable scenarios from the complete film trilogy, including the original film, THE MATRIX. Throughout the game, the path the player takes to resolve each scenario and the resulting consequences will be scripted and directed by the Wachowski Brothers. The likenesses of all of the films’ key actors -- including Keanu Reeves (“Neo”), Laurence Fishburne (“Morpheus”), Carrie-Ann Moss (“Trinity), and Hugo Weaving (“Agent Smith”) -- will be featured in THE MATRIX: PATH OF NEO, which will also include footage from all three feature films, as well as THE ANIMATRIX.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be embarking on a new Matrix project,” said Jim Caparro, President and Chief Executive Officer of Atari. “The Wachowski Brothers have created a universe that is uniquely deep and rich, with virtually limitless creative possibilities, and the interactive space is the ideal world in which to explore them. With The Matrix: Path of Neo, the Wachowski Brothers will be giving their legions of fans the best of everything: the first chance to personally relive Neo’s journey, and the chance to experience new adventures they cannot yet even imagine.”
“I’m very happy to continue my collaboration with Larry and Andy on all things Matrix and beyond,” said Joel Silver, producer of the Matrix film trilogy. “Enter The Matrix added another exciting chapter to the legend. I’m thrilled that we are further expanding and exploring the vast Matrix universe through The Matrix: Path of Neo.”

Today we prepare you another hardware review with the Logic 3 Light Shield Advance. It's an add-on for the Gameboy Advance.
Here's a snip from the review:
Well, good question. The Light Shield Advance (lets call it LSA) in infact an add-on that needs to be hooked on the rear side of the GBA. It connects using the EXT interface and gets it power through that interface as well. So you don't need any batteries at all for this device. It uses it directly from the GBA.
On the LSA rear side, you have 3 possibilities. There's the ON/OFF button (really small), the EXT interface so you can still hook up a link cable and a dimmer light switch which enables you to, exactly dim the light more or less.

Rising Star Games brings new adventure game to the PS2

Rising Star Games is set to release a new take on third-person action adventures with the beautiful hack-and-slash epic Swords Of Destiny. Heading for the PlayStation 2 in the summer, Swords of Destiny is further example of Rising Star's commitment to bringing quality Japanese software to the European market.
With an engine making the most of the PlayStation 2 hardware, players are treated to beautifully designed environments, rich in visual flair and atmosphere. Featuring diverse locations such as ruined fortresses, mountain passes shrouded in mist and labyrinthine temple interiors, there's plenty to explore. Within those impressive locations, stylish characterisation abounds with imaginative designs for both allies and enemies as suitably moody protagonists taking on superbly detailed and creepy opponents. Full localisation is also implemented, with professional voice actors providing dialogue painstakingly translated from the original Japanese. Vocals aside, there's an array of suitably dynamic sound effects to complement the action.
Players take the role of Lei Yun, a supremely talented apprentice on a long and challenging mission against dark forces seeking control of the land. Previously defeated by Lei Yun's master, this pervasive menace returns in the form of the Gyakki, a race of powerful demons under the control of a tyrannical Empress. Hell-bent on bringing death and destruction to the nation, only Lei Yun stands in the way of a seemingly unstoppable army of evil.
Utilising the three magical swords handed to him by his fallen master, as well as weapons dropped by the demons he defeats, Lei Yun must battle his way through level upon level populated by all manner of demonic opponents. The three main swords give the player new abilities when equipped. Enemy sword types appear according to how opponents are dispatched and each weapon has its own unique properties and statistics.
The lock-on based fighting system is satisfying and simple enough to understand within a few seconds play, but deep enough to provide lasting appeal. When on the defensive, the player can dash, jump and roll away from the locked-on enemy's attacks. When taking the offensive, the lock-on really comes into its own. By accruing enough 'Sword Time' through killing enemies in a conventional manner or alternatively, using magic found in destructable items around the levels, Lei Yun can unleash devastating combo attacks that can clear the area of enemies in a spectacular slow-motion aerial tornado of dashing, slashing, sword-swinging destruction.
With its dynamic and intense fighting system, engaging plot and stunning visuals, Swords Of Destiny will be released for the PS2 in June 2005.

Tech info on PS3 internal 'Cell' processor
 [Category :
] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, February 8 2005 @ 16:27 CET]
At the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) today, IBM, Sony Corporation, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Toshiba Corporation (Toshiba) for the first time disclosed in detail the breakthrough multi-core architectural design - featuring supercomputer-like floating point performance with observed clock speeds greater than 4 GHz - of their jointly developed microprocessor code-named Cell.
A team of IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba engineers has collaborated on development of the Cell microprocessor at a joint design center established in Austin, Texas, since March 2001.
The prototype chip is 221 mm2, integrates 234 million transistors, and is fabricated with 90 nanometer SOI technology.
Cell's breakthrough multi-core architecture and ultra high-speed communications capabilities deliver vastly improved, real-time response for entertainment and rich media applications, in many cases 10 times the performance of the latest PC processors.
Effectively a "supercomputer on a chip" incorporating advanced multi-processing technologies used in IBM's sophisticated servers, Sony Group's computer entertainment systems and Toshiba's advanced semiconductor technology, Cell will become the broadband processor used for industrial applications to the new digital home.
Another advantage of Cell is to support multiple operating systems, such as conventional operating systems (including Linux), real-time operating systems for computer entertainment and consumer electronics applications as well as guest operating systems for specific applications, simultaneously.
Initial production of Cell microprocessors is expected to begin at IBM's 300mm wafer fabrication facility in East Fishkill, N.Y., followed by Sony Group's Nagasaki Fab, this year. IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba expect to promote Cell-based products including a broad range of industry-wide applications, from digital televisions to home servers to supercomputers.
Among the highlights of Cell released today:
- Cell is a breakthrough architectural design - featuring eight synergistic processors and top clock speeds of greater than 4 GHz (as measured during initial hardware testing)
- Cell is a multicore chip capable of massive floating point processing
- Cell is OS neutral and supports multiple operating systems simultaneously.

Rising Star Games Limited (Rising Star) – a joint venture between Japanese publisher Marvelous Interactive Inc. and long-standing Japanese Nintendo distributor Bergsala AB– will initially publish titles for PSP, Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2, introducing new games alongside enhanced and updated iterations of interactive entertainment's most loved franchises.

The firm's goal is to reduce the period between Japanese and Western release, reversing the threat of grey imports. Thanks to Rising Star's close working relationship with its development partners, there will even be occasions where the European release is ahead of the Japanese street date.
The first trio of titles sees Bubble Bobble and Space Invaders appear in significantly enhanced form on Nintendo DS, along with Sword of Destiny on PS2. A new Evolution series will be introduced on PSP later in the year, which will enhance classic franchises further for the new Sony handheld.
Space Invaders Revolution takes the much-loved original format and enhances it for the Nintendo DS with a host of new game modes and challenges, all wrapped up in next-generation handheld visuals and audio.
Bubble Bobble Revolution will make full use of the Nintendo DS's touch screen, offering players the opportunity to interact with the game's vibrant environments in spectacular and innovative ways.
Sword of Destiny is an original PlayStation 2 hack and slash adventure, which offers some of the most finely-honed combat and lavish environments yet seen on the Sony console.
European gamers will be treated to four new iterations of Harvest Moon. Harvest Moon: Oh Wonderful Life will appear on Game Cube and PS2 in September and October 2005 respectively, marking the series' first-ever appearance on a Sony Console. Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town arrives on Game Boy Advance in June 2004, with an all-new Harvest Moon game (working title: Harvest Moon DS) arriving on Nintendo's dual-screen handheld in November 2005. Each of these versions will offer a slightly different twist on the staggeringly popular Harvest Moon theme, and promises to introduce the series' wonderful concept to a whole new audience.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – PAL additions confirmed
European versions of Hideo Kojima's classic series enhanced with addition of four key new features
Konami of Europe has confirmed the full roster of gameplay additions to the forthcoming PAL versions of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. In total, European gamers will enjoy four new elements, unseen in the existing Japanese and US versions of the game.
Scheduled for release on PlayStation 2 on March 4th, 2005, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is already one of the most anticipated games of the year. Set in the 1964, the game is centered in the escalating Cold War, with central hero Snake armed with weapons of the era and charged with recovering a defecting scientist. To this end, series creator and Director Hideo Kojima has moved away from the urban environments of the game's predecessors and has created a lush jungle setting.
In addition to the new environments, Kojima has packed the game with a wealth of new gameplay features. The 'Camouflage Index' lets players change Snake's costume and face paint to match the surrounding area and help evade discovery, while a stunning CQC (Close Quarters Combat) system empowers him with a range of new, offensive moves. This new system facilitates the most advanced hand-to-hand combat techniques in the series to date, with Snake using guards as shields, throwing them or simply rendering them unconscious.
In readiness for the PAL version's March release, Kojima has again added a number of new ideas to the European versions of the game. As with Director's enhanced PAL version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, European gamers will get more Snake for their money than their US and Japanese counterparts in the form of four key new features.
As previously announced, PAL versions of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will feature a new 'DUEL MODE' which allows players to battle through the game's 'Boss Fights' independently, and details the rich variety of adversaries Snake faces during the course of the game. A 'DEMO THEATRE' has also been created, and can be used to play the game's stunning link sequences in order to enjoy the many dramatic plot twists in order.
European gamers will also enjoy a new 'European Extreme' difficulty level, which is designed for hardened veterans of Snake's jungle environment, while there are two new levels in the light-hearted 'Snake Vs Monkey' mode, wherein the Metal Gear Solid hero finds himself chasing and trying to catch errant monkeys! The PAL version will also feature many face paint designs not seen in the existing versions of the game, while the winning designs from Konami's global camouflage creation competition will also be included.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will be released for PlayStation 2 on March 4th, 2005.
