PlayDevil.com reviews Burnout 3: Takedown on X-Box
  [Category : X_Box] [Posted by Bjorn on Friday, October 29 2004 @ 19:05 CET]
We have just posted an update in our review section with a new extreme racing game. "Burnout 3: Takedown" is the lastest installment of software developer Criterion and publisher Electronic Arts.
Here's a snip from our devilish in-depth review:
One of the most surprising if not most crashing mode is that you must just ride a car straight into the heart of traffic to cause the most damage. And the more damage you made, the more dollars you'll earn.
Collecting crash dollars will let you unlock new cars. Cars range from heavier to more balanced and more speed. Customs or sports editions are fully at your service if they are unlocked.

[Category : PC] [Posted by Bjorn on Wednesday, October 27 2004 @ 23:03 CET]
id SoftwareTM and Activision, Inc. will unleash an all-new assault on humanity with DOOM 3: Resurrection of EvilTM, the official expansion pack to the fastest selling PC first- person action game ever in the U.S., according to NPD Techworld. Co-developed by Nerve Software and id Software, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil continues the terrifying and intense action of the already classic DOOM 3, which Maxim and Computer Gaming World awarded "five out of five stars" and the Associated Press called "one of the scariest games ever made." Through the discovery of a timeless and evil artifact you now hold the powers of Hell in your hands, and the demons have come to hunt you down and take it back. Following the events of DOOM 3 and featuring new locations, characters and weapons, including the return of the double-barreled shotgun, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil expands the terrifying action that fans and critics have been raving about. The title will require the full retail version of DOOM 3, and has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

"DOOM 3 defines first-person cinematic action, and the expansion pack continues right where we left off - with a terrifying atmosphere, a new story and one of the most classic weapons ever, the double-barreled shotgun," states Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "Now that fans have survived the horrors and edge of your seat action of the original, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil delivers players deeper into the heart of the UAC to uncover new secrets and technology used to destroy the demon force that's Hell-bent on destroying you."

Mind Games with Football Manager 2005
[Category : PC] [Posted by Bjorn on Thursday, October 14 2004 @ 22:08 CET]
Sports Interactive, creators of Championship Manager® series, and SEGA, have given players the opportunity to meddle with the minds of their managerial opposite numbers in response to the suggestions of football fans, who said they’d “just love it” if they could taunt their opponents in the run up to big games.

The new function in the game permits you to taunt, praise or even laugh at your opposition and their chances of success in order to destroy any confidence they had and to build up a feeling of confidence amongst your own squad before the big match.

As with any real life football situation, mind games can work to your advantage but also backfire spectacularly. Players will be taking a gamble that their chosen actions could see their opponent respond like the infamous reaction of Kevin Keegan under the taunts of Sir Alex Ferguson. Their derision might, however, instead cause opponents to respond like Graeme Souness’ Galatasary side who avenged arch rivals Fenerbahce’s suggestion that their boss was not fit to manage following a heart attack by beating them heavily at home. Famously Souness rubbed it in by scurrying across the pitch at the end of the game to plant his club’s flag firmly in the centre of the home team’s centre circle (see below for SEGA’s top ten football mind games).

“Before an important game users will be able to go to the media with their thoughts on the ability of the opposition and the ability of their manager all in the name of unsportsmanlike conduct”, says Miles Jacobson, Managing Director of Sports Interactive.

“Once you’ve sent a comment it will be picked up by the media and anything you say will be made public. Bear in mind your comments affect the way the media deal with you, along with your players. Players in your side can definitely be lifted with some inspiring words from their manager which can result in a much better performance”.

Jacobson is quick to point out that your complex mind games might upset the opposition but it may also have an adverse effect on your team. “It’s easy to upset half of your first team squad by suggesting that a very successful team are going to get relegated. Your players can easily become disheartened by your comments which destroy confidence in the team. This leads to poor performances in the team players wishing to re-negotiating contracts and in exceptional cases players asking for a transfer!”.

Manager Mind games can be devastatingly effective and can also fall flat on their face as can be seen from our list of 10 moments where footballers and managers either laughed or cried all because of the simple spoken word. In the game, as in life, the effects can have serious effects on your ability and reputation as a manager.

Microsoft Game Studios today announced that Halo® 2 for Xbox®, the most-anticipated video game of the year, has gone gold and will ship simultaneously over three days to 27 countries in eight languages. Halo 2 will be available on November 9 throughout North and South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Halo 2 is being localized in eight languages including English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (traditional), Spanish, French, German and Italian.

In Halo 2, the action picks up where the first game ended. Master Chief, with the help of a small group of marines, has destroyed the religious artifact and artificial world known as Halo, and is making his way back to Earth. Upon arrival, he and the last surviving Earth forces will mount a titanic final struggle against the marauding Covenant armada.

Pushing the Xbox hardware to its very limits, Halo 2 will expand on everything that made the original game great, plus add a wealth of technological and gameplay advances. Significantly improved graphics, enhanced artificial intelligence (AI), an advanced real-time lighting engine and destructible interactive environments are just a small part of Halo 2's evolution of design and technology. Every improvement in Halo 2 is designed to take gameplay to a new level - and in the end, to tell a more compelling story.

Utilizing Xbox Live to redefine online play, Halo 2 will deliver superior online multiplayer capabilities. Whether playing with a clan on a new multiplayer map, boarding a friend's Warthog, dogfighting in Banshees or checking player stats, Halo 2 will bring the social experience to a higher level via Xbox Live. Counterfeiter fined 42,000 £ for piracy games
[Category : (default)] [Posted by Bjorn on Monday, October 11 2004 @ 16:13 CET]
A two-year piracy investigation conducted by Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council Trading Standards supported by ELSPA (Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association) came to a successful close at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, with a counterfeiter being fined a total of £42,000.

Marco Granata of Granville Close, Wallasey, Wirral pleaded guilty to 30 counts of Trade Mark offences in respect of counterfeit Nintendo Game Boy Advance cartridges, and was fined £7,500 for the charges, prosecution costs of £5,847, and a further £28,964 under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Forensic examination of his computer revealed that he had made over £24,000 through Internet sales of counterfeit games at the time of the raid.

Roger Bennett, director general of ELSPA commented: "ELSPA is determined to stamp out computer and video games piracy around the country. This result shows that in the long run, pirates do not profit from their illegal activities. We would like to thank Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council for bring this investigation to such a successful conclusion."

The offender, a 46-year-old air traffic control assistant employee of Manchester airport, was raided in July 2002 following an investigation into his website offering pirated Nintendo cartridges. The raid revealed 668 games as well as the ability to manufacture many more with components imported from Thailand. It was the first time ELSPA had encountered a home 'factory' for producing the Game Boy cartridges. Granata first came to the attention of ELSPA in 1998 for offering 'chipping' devices over the Internet.

Good news for those hardware fanatics that are waiting to use a decent keyboard with their favorite games. More specifically use a totally new keyset, which is adapted to your game before you start playing.

We are talking about the new keyboard from Ideazon, named ZBoard.
With ZBoard you have a normal keyboard with multimedia and office functions. However, you can also buy different keysets for games such as Doom3, Call of Duty and more and replace that keyset with your existing one.
Using a new keyset which has been programmed to the game is more effective and accurate since every key on the keyset is set for maximal use.

Expect a review of this keyboard very soon!

[Category : PC] [Posted by Bjorn on Thursday, October 7 2004 @ 11:34 CET]
German game development Studio, Replay Studios, located in Hamburg announces 3rd person action game Survivor. Survivor will be developed for all systems, PC and consoles. The Game establishes the all new genre Reality Gaming.

SURVIVOR is a 3rd-person Disaster Survival Game with highly interactive locations, based on famous, authentic-historical disaster scenarios. In independent game episodes, the player will experience some of the most dramatic disasters of the 20 - 21st century. The original single player game concept has never been seen before. We call this unique genre REALITY GAMING. Anyone who likes to know how it feels like being aboard the Titanic after she has hit the iceberg, could go for a try.

Survivor offers GTA like player freedom game play mechanics that forces the player to participate in the most dramatic and well known disaster scenarios: sinking of the Titanic, Hurricane Andrew, 9/11, Hiroshima and the giant earthquake in Mexico in 1985. While many subquests must be fulfilled within the disaster scenarios, the main goal of the game is always pure survival.

We from PlayDevil.com had the opportunity to visit the Benelux press-conference that ATARI held last week in Antwerp, Belgium. We were able to meet the CEO of the English based game developer, Sports Interactive, Miles Jacobson.
Perhaps unknown to some people, football (manager) gamers do know this chap is THE man that brought Championship Manager to life.
Now publishing with SEGA they are bringing a new sports management game, namely Football Manager 2005.

We managed as probably the ONLY online web site @ the Benelux press-conference to secure an exclusive interview with the man himself and asked him everything. Well 'almost'.

You can read our entire interview right here.

Find out what happens when a fast-talking fish tells a great white lie in DreamWorks’ Shark Tale video game, available now from Activision, Inc. Featuring a hip underwater culture and funky tunes, gamers immerse themselves in the world of Reef City as they step into the fins of Oscar, a bigger-than-life little fish that is constantly ”fin-agling” his way out of trouble. Players will dance, race, fight, explore and brave their way through more than 25 movie-inspired and game exclusive levels.

DreamWorks’ Shark Tale for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft and the Nintendo GameCube™ is available for a suggested retail price of £39.99. Both the Game Boy® Advance and PC versions feature unique game play with their own adventures and carry a suggested retail price of £29.99 each. The game has a 3+ PEGI rating.

In the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of DreamWorks’ Shark Tale, players can plug in a dance pad and truly get into the groove. Whether getting funky in a dance challenge, or dodging traffic while careening through the bustling metropolis of Reef City, players will experience the vibe of the movie thanks to remixed and licensed R&B, funk, reggae and hip-hop music from top artists.

In DreamWorks’ Shark Tale, Oscar is a little fish who dreams big, but his dreams land him in hot water when a great white lie turns him into an unlikely hero. At first, his fellow fish swallow Oscar’s story hook, line and sinker and he is showered with fame and fortune. It’s all going along swimmingly, until it starts to become clear that Oscar’s tale about being the defender of the Reef is all wet. Oscar is finding out that being a hero comes at a Market Price when his lie threatens to make him the Catch of the Day. Now he has to tread water until he can get the scales to tip back in his favor again. DreamWorks’ upcoming feature film, “Shark Tale,” opened nationwide last October 1.
