New force feedback system to use in next-gen consoles ?
 [Category :
] [Posted by Bjorn on Wednesday, January 31 2007 @ 10:15 CET]
SplitFish GameWare Inc., a leader in video game hardware innovation, today announced it has developed a new dynamic force feedback system for use with the Sony Playstation 3 and other next-generation video game systems. Basic PS2 and Xbox versions are being considered.
The new SplitFish dynamic force feedback system was designed to insure compliant operation with the new tilt, motion and directional sensor technologies currently found in the next generation game consoles. The potential interference on the Sony PS3 SIXAXIS Controller caused by rotating mass force feedback systems such as Immersion’s Rotating Mass Patent, required us to approach the solution from a completely new direction. While the SplitFish EdgeFX uses a mechanical feedback system, this new technology produces a whole new aspect of force and tactile feedback.
This low power consumption force feedback technology called “Sensor Effects - SensorFX” uses no moving parts to produce meaningful sensory feedback. A broad range of intensity and sensation compliment the ability to derive feedback sensations from isolated areas on the controller, to isolate one side or the other, movement from front to back or all areas at the same time. As an example, a gamer playing a race game can feel variations in pulse, strength and collision location and to feel intensity differences between a smooth guardrail swipe and a full frontal slam into a wall.
The SensorFX feedback system can be sold as an add-on to existing controllers or as an imbedded feature that is part of a standard controller. The SensorFX PS3 add-on version is simply connected to the USB plug on the PS3 controller, similar to SplitFish’s MotionFX.
The patent pending SensorFX has two modes, one for games that have force feedback support already built in and the other mode that relies on motion tilt sensing and button use and other actions to trigger the SensorFX tactile feedback. SplitFish will work with video game publishers and next-generation hardware manufacturers in an effort to establish standards for this directional force feedback technology.

As the options for news multiply, Nintendo is putting a simple solution for straight news right in the palm of your hand-in the form of the Wii Remote™.
The News Channel, free to Wii™ owners, will debut on the console's Wii Menu beginning tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 27. Using the international resources of the Associated Press, the News Channel gives you key stories in multiple categories from across the country and around the world.
"What Wii has done for video gaming, we hope it will also accomplish for news," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "Just by pointing at your TV screen, you become your own interactive editor, instantly accessing the latest headline stories, whether they originate in Kansas City or Kyoto."
"The Associated Press is always looking for innovative ways to expand its audience for news and information," said Jane Seagrave, vice president and director of AP's digital division. "The Wii News Channel extends our global reach even further, on yet another platform, offering our news to people who otherwise might not see it."
The simple user interface allows Wii owners to spin a virtual globe and point to the location of a news event using the Wii Remote. Stories will be listed under headings including Business, Sports, Arts/Entertainment, Technology and Science/Health to allow users to quickly access information in the order they want. At any given time, dozens of stories might be available for each category. In the global view, stories can be grouped by region instead of category. Icons show which stories have been read, which stories are text-only and which ones come with news photos. Because Wii caters to all different ages, the interface allows users to change the size of the text. By using the "always-on" system functionality of WiiConnect24™, stories will be updated frequently, even while owners are sleeping.

Wing Island launches across Europe on Wii

] [Posted by Bjorn on Friday, January 26 2007 @ 11:14 CET]
Wing Island soars across Europe on Wii on 23rd March 2007. Wing Island is published by Hudson and distributed by Nintendo.
As the first flying game for the dynamic Wii Console, Wing Island is like no other flying game out there. Using the Wii’s ground-breaking motion sensitive controls, players can feel as if they really are flying their plane. The use of the Wii Remote allows players to achieve maximum precision whilst flying, combined with a more realistic feel. By simply tilting the controller left or right, you can turn the plane in the desired direction by angling the remote up or down gamers can easily change height. Quick turns can be easily achieved by waving the remote’s tip to the left or the right. Acceleration and breaking is equally simple to control with quick bursts of speed controlled by quickly thrusting the remote forward or backward, whilst more steady speed is achieved by pressing up or down on the D-pad. Not only is this a simple and intuitive way to control the game but it also brings an all-new level of fun and excitement to the game, regardless of your previous gaming experience, as your movements control the plane.
In the main Story mode, gamers progress by completing each mission and unlocking new locations. The game’s single player missions set the player a number of fun tasks to test their flying skills ranging from food drops to extinguishing forest fires and taking photos of assigned objects. Players earn different ratings for each mission based on time, accuracy and damage to the planes. This in turn influences points, bonus points, and money awarded for each of the 27 missions. Earning money in turn allows players the opportunity to tune and repair their plane and even buy one of seven completely new planes. During each mission the player has the opportunity to fly solo or in a formation of five dependent upon which mission they are involved in, therefore enabling the player to experience the best of both flight methods.
‘Wing Island’ is centred around three different, exotic cartoon islands inhabited by wacky cartoon animals who will help players complete the tasks they are set. The first island is the smallest and houses ‘Wing Inc’, where the first few missions take place. The second location becomes available after completion of the initial missions and presents more challenging terrain across which to navigate. The third and final island has a large city built on it and is by far the most challenging to navigate across.
If the idea of completing missions doesn’t appeal to you then select Free Mode where you can fly freely around the islands in the game without constraints of time. At any point in the mission players can also try and break their own records to show off to their friends in the Single Player Competitive Mode. There are three options in this mode: score attack, where players must pop balloons by ramming them with a spike on the plane, time attack where they must race through numbered gates and also Plane Tail which allows you to pop balloons tied to your opponent,
If a bit of extra competition is what you’re looking for why not go head to head against a friend to prove yourself a flying ace, or perfect your skills by taking on Wii in Two Player Mode. As in Single Player Competitive Mode, this mode also contains score attack and time, as well as Plane Tail.
The super-exciting ‘Wing Island’ flies into stores across Europe on Wii on the 23rd March 2007 at an estimated retail price of around 49 Euros (approximately £34 in the UK). The Wii console is available across Europe priced at 249 Euros (approximately £179).

Square Enix Licenses Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3

Square Enix Co., Ltd. today announced a licensing agreement with Epic Games that enables Square Enix to introduce Epic’s Unreal® Engine 3 middleware into its next-generation game development process.
Square Enix has built its highly successful franchises such as FINAL FANTASY®, DRAGON QUEST® and KINGDOM HEARTS by pushing game consoles to their limits and providing unparalleled user experiences for more than 20 years. This was achieved through the company’s proprietary technologies, which were mostly optimized for each game given the limited resources of game consoles. However, in order to ensure both game quality and development efficiency for next-generation game systems including consoles, PCs and network titles, Square Enix is now building a technology platform to be used throughout the company utilizing proprietary technologies as well as introducing third-party solutions such as Unreal Engine 3.
“The complexity of next-generation game systems featuring HD graphics and multi-core parallel processing poses a number of technological challenges to our game development. However, we can expedite our game development process significantly while allowing extra time and resources to be spent on game design and mechanics by establishing an effective technology platform,” said Taku Murata, General Manager, Research and Development Division, Square Enix, Co., Ltd. “The technology platform for game development is becoming more important than ever. I'm excited to be partnering with Epic Games in such an important area.”
“We’re extremely excited to be working with Square Enix,” said Jay Wilbur, Vice President, Epic Games, Inc. “Square Enix is one of the biggest and most influential companies in the world-wide game business, and having them work with Unreal Engine 3 is a major honor for us and something we’re very proud to be announcing.”

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice in March for DS

Following on from the critically acclaimed Phoenix Wright ™ Ace Attorney ™, the courtroom is in session once more across Europe on 16th March 2007 when Phoenix Wright: ™ Ace Attorney ™ Justice for All launches exclusively on the Nintendo DS.
Phoenix Wright: ™ Ace Attorney ™ Justice for All is developed and published by Capcom and distributed by Nintendo.
Set six months after the events portrayed in the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, this game once again follows the exploits of the young lawyer as he battles a brand new District Attorney and exercises his legal prowess to collect evidence, examine witnesses and argue the case for his clients. With four all new cases to, Phoenix is this time up against an even tougher opposition when he finds out that the District Attorney is none other than the daughter of his old adversary Manfred von Karma and she is obsessed with taking him down.
As in the previous Phoenix Wright title the action is split into two distinct sections. The first is where players must investigate crime scenes and interrogate witnesses for clues, using the touch-screen to collect evidence and inspect items of interest. The second part of the game is based in the court-room where players use their skill to argue the case as well as interjecting at key moments via the Nintendo DS microphone with cries of ‘Objection’, ‘Take that’ and more.
Phoenix Wright ™: Ace Attorney ™ Justice for All features an all new ‘Psyche-Lock’ feature when Phoenix is dealing with a hostile witness who does not want to reveal the truth. The only way to get the necessary information out of the witness is for the player to open up the Psyche-Lock with a series of correct questions or by catching the witness out on inconsistent statements. Being able to effectively deal with these witnesses will become an essential part of winning the case in this game.
Another new addition to this game is a life bar, which represents Phoenix’s status in court. Presenting dubious evidence and failing to break Psyche-Locks will reduce the player’s credibility and cause this life bar to go down. When it gets too low Phoenix will lose the case and find himself in hot water with the judge. Players can replenish a life bar during the trial by successfully breaking witness Psyche-Locks.
Phoenix Wright ™ Ace Attorney ™ Justice for All takes to the stand across Europe on the Nintendo DS on 16th March 2006 for around €40 (£30 in the UK).

Wild Hare Entertainment Signs Air Battles: Sky Defender

Wild Hare Entertainment has announced plans to release “Air Battles: Sky Defender” in February 2007 for the PC. Developed by Pilot Entertainment, a strategic partner of Shockwave Productions, the creators of the critically acclaimed, “Wings of Power: Heavy Bombers and Jets” and “World War II fighters.” “Air Battles” brings the frantic, high-speed action of an arcade-style shooter to history's ultimate aerial killing ground, World War II.
“Air Battles: Sky Defender” allows players to experience realistic WW II aerial combat with top notch graphics and historically accurate aircraft. “Air Battles” was specifically designed for gamers that can’t get enough of First Person Shooter (FPS) action.
“Flight simulators (sims) and FPS titles at their core are very similar in concept and game play mechanics. Unfortunately, the majority of gamers are intimidated by the realistic nature of most of the current combat flight sims,” said Shawn Russ, Executive Producer for Wild Hare Entertainment. “Air Battles” is more of a cross between an action title and a realistic sim. The default settings are set for gamers who like to jump into a game and start laying waste to everything they come across. On the other hand, if players are looking for more of a challenge they can raise the difficulty level and test their skills against enemy A.I. which is modeled on real world tactics.
Designed with the novice in mind, “Air Battles” allows combat flight sim and fps enthusiasts to jump right into the action as a pilot for either the Axis or Allied forces and experience exciting, historically-themed, scripted missions. Using classic World War II planes, players can take part in massive air battles where over 400 planes are used to recreate the violent aerial combat that took place in the skies above Europe during WW II. “Air Battles: Sky Defender,” uses enhanced particle and weapon effects – explosions, tracer rounds, and trailing smoke and fire, as well as detailed plane models, environments, weather effects and volumetric clouds enabling flight sim novices the same amazing experience they get from first-person shooters.
“Air Battles: Sky Defender” will be available at retailers across North America in February.

Blizzard Entertainment® today announced that World of Warcraft®: The Burning Crusade™ has broken the day-one sales record to become the fastest-selling PC game ever in North America and Europe, with a worldwide total of nearly 2.4 million copies sold in the first 24 hours of availability.
The Burning Crusade, the first expansion set for World of Warcraft, was simultaneously released in North America, Europe, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia on 16 January, and on 17 January in Australia and New Zealand.
Blizzard had supplied more than 4 million game boxes to retailers worldwide, and more than 5,000 stores throughout the world had their doors open at midnight to welcome thousands of expectant players.
Day-one sales totals on both continents were similar, with an estimated total of nearly 1.2 million copies sold on the first day in North America and an estimated total of more than 1.1 million copies sold in Europe within the first 24 hours of launch.* By the end of the first day of availability on both continents, a total of more than 1.7 million players had already logged in and upgraded World of Warcraft to play The Burning Crusade.
“The Burning Crusade has already exceeded even our most ambitious expectations,” said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased that so many players are eager to see all of the new content that the expansion has to offer, and we look forward to seeing everyone online as additional players continue to upgrade in the days ahead.”
Retailers are continuing to report sustained demand, so if players have not yet purchased their copy of The Burning Crusade, they are advised to call ahead to make sure their store has copies on hand. Additional shipments of the expansion have been routed to retailers to help maintain stock levels.
“The excitement and sense of anticipation generated by the huge crowd at The Burning Crusade launch event far exceeded our expectations,” said Tim Ellis, Head of Games for HMV, UK. “And in terms of units shifted, this was HMV’s biggest launch event ever, and that includes Audio and DVD events.”
Prior to the launch of The Burning Crusade, World of Warcraft was played by more than 8 million players around the world -- with more than 2 million on North American realms and more than 1.5 million on European realms -- making it the most successful subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game in PC-gaming history.

SEGA Announces Crush for PSP

SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe, Ltd. today announced that Crush™, an inventive new puzzle game for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, is currently in development and scheduled for release in Summer 2007.
Developed by U.K. based Kuju Brighton, Crush is an exciting new concept which challenges how players traditionally approach games with its intriguing new style of thought-provoking gameplay.
Unique to its genre, Crush introduces a valuable new gaming experience that is wholly suited to the PSP system. Set within a complex, hypnotic 3D world, players will use the game's unique crush mechanic to "crush" the environment and transform it into a more simplified 2D platformer. Once flattened, players will utilize the 2D space to move to new areas to solve otherwise impossible challenges, and unlock secret items that were previously unobtainable in the 3D environment. Players will then "uncrush" the 2D environment and return to the 3D world.
"Crush introduces a fascinating new gameplay perspective on the PSP that encourages players to stretch their imagination in a whole new way," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA® of America, Inc. "The spatial concept of the crushing mechanic is something truly unique that encourages users to think back and forth between 3D and 2D objects and environments to engage different parts of their brain, and see beyond what is literally in front them."
Designed for a wide and varied audience, Crush tells the story of Dan, a man with a lifetime of unresolved issues and bottled up emotions that has turned him into a nervous insomniac who is too tired to turn his life around. Desperate for a cure, he turns to hypnosis. It is during this state that he is given one last chance to sort through the wreckage of his past, before he loses the last thing he has – his sanity.
Crush is scheduled for release in Summer 2007.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 now available for DS in NA

] [Posted by Bjorn on Tuesday, January 23 2007 @ 12:27 CET]
The date is Dec. 28, 1979. Disgraced New York detective Kyle Hyde checks into the seedy Hotel Dusk in Los Angeles and suddenly finds himself embroiled in a 30-year-old murder mystery.
This is the story of Hotel Dusk: Room 215™, available exclusively for the portable Nintendo DS™ on Jan. 24. The dual screens of a player's Nintendo DS display stylized sketch animation evoking a comic-book-like film noir. Conversations with more than a dozen characters help players piece together different story elements as the mystery deepens. Players decide where the story goes next by weighing their options and tapping their decision on the touch screen using the stylus.
"Hotel Dusk: Room 215 could be considered a new genre for both video games and storytelling," explains George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Just as audio books brought the printed word to a new medium, so does this new 'video game book.' "
Hotel Dusk: Room 215 features deep characters, grown-up themes and an engrossing plot. It has more in common with a gritty crime novel than a video game, and appeals to mystery lovers and video game fans alike. As the plot develops, players must make choices before they begin each conversation, like deciding whether to strong-arm a subject or play it cool. Players hold the portable Nintendo DS system sideways like a book, and the touch-screen controls make it easy for newcomers to pick up and play, even if they have never played a video game before. Nintendo's aim is to expand the world of video games to new audiences through creative new interfaces.

Experience Maze Madness With Kororinpa For Wii

] [Posted by Bjorn on Monday, January 22 2007 @ 17:21 CET]
Prepare to rock and roll as your brain does a loop the loop with the ultimate Wii puzzle game! Players must complete testing and taxing mazes as Kororinpa rolls across Europe on 23rd February 2007, only on Wii. Kororinpa is published by Hudson and distributed by Nintendo.
Using tilting Wii’s motion sensitive Wii Remote with poise and precision, players must seek to navigate their favourite cute and quirky balls, each with their own look and varying benefits, through complex 3D mazes. Therefore no complicated button combinations are necessary, the tactile controls allow players to tip and tilt their environment in all directions, even upside-down to 180 degrees - making the game intuitive and easy for anyone to pick up and play, whilst still remaining challenging and addictive.
A steady hand and a keen strategic eye are key to keep your favourite ball on the right track in Kororinpa. As the maze is tilted the ball will move as it would in real life, as if pulled by gravity. But beware; too much slant could see the ball roll out of control off the edge of the maze sending the player back to the start! Whist progressing along the course, players must also collect all the Red Crystals to unlock the goal, which in turn unlocks the next maze adding yet more precision and strategy to the challenges.
To prove yourself as the ball master, you can also go head to head against a friend using one Wii Remote and Nunchuk controller, splitting the screen either horizontally or vertically. In multiplayer mode the first player to reach the end of the maze collecting all their Red Crystals will reign victorious over their fellow contender!
With over 50 quirky mazes available to unlock and five different environments to experience there will always be a new and exciting challenge around the corner. Each environment has its own unique music, obstacles and visual style for the player to enjoy. Whilst progressing through the game players should also keep a look out for Green Crystals that unlock secret environments and even more stages to challenge even the most experienced puzzlers.
As if that wasn’t tricky enough, each of your balls has a varying level of Response, Speed, Slide and Bounce. Players must therefore select their ball carefully in order to successfully complete Kororinpa. As more levels are completed the types of balls that can be selected will increase, including balls such as a ladybug, cat, penguin, watermelon and even a pig, each boasting different characteristics and varying levels of control.
Kororinpa will roll its way across Europe on Wii on 23rd February 2007 at an estimated retail price of around €49 (approximately £34 in the UK).

Nintendo DS Breaks Records !

The Nintendo DS has gone from strength to strength since its launch in March 2005, with sales dwarfing those of all other consoles as Nintendo attracts all-new audiences to the gaming industry. Now after just one year and ten months on sale, Nintendo DS has become the fastest games console in European history to sell 10 million (sell-thru to customers) and with 1.7 million units selling in December 2006 alone it is also by far the best selling handheld games console across Europe.
The success of Nintendo DS has been driven by Nintendo’s range of innovative Touch! Generations games, targeted at non-traditional audiences. Nintendogs which launched in October 2005, is now being enjoyed by over five million Europeans, whilst titles like Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How old is your brain? have been enjoying similar success with over two million copies sold to consumers to date in Europe. What’s more six months after its launch sales are still going strong and it’s maintaining a high position in sales charts across Europe!
Traditional gaming titles are also achieving significant growth with total sales of New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Animal Crossing: Wild World all surpassing the million sold mark in Europe. The success doesn’t end there with dozens of third party games such as The Sims 2 Pets (Electronic Arts), Sonic Rush (SEGA) and Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Buena Vista Games) selling at a significant rate in Europe.
Laurent Fischer, European Marketing Director said:
“Nintendo DS topped the six million mark in September and has continued to go from strength to strength with thousands of new people being introduced to gaming through the Nintendo DS. Its appeal to both gamers and non-gamers means it has expanded the gaming population significantly. This landmark figure of 10 million Nintendo DS gamers cements the console’s position as undisputed leader of the handheld market, bringing gaming to a whole new audience - something that was unimaginable a few years ago! The innovative Nintendo DS is now helping to shape the whole market with sales of the Nintendo DS console and games being the main drivers behind recent market growth all across Europe.”
Nintendo is continuing to build on this momentum with a dynamic range of exciting, new games including Mario Slam Basketball, Star Fox Command, Actionloop, and the highly anticipated legendary Final Fantasy III from Square-Enix, all scheduled for launch in 2007.
The Nintendo DS Lite is now available in black, white and pink, priced around at 150 Euros (£99 UK). The Nintendo DS is available across Europe in blue, silver and pink at around 130 Euros (£89 UK).

Sequel to Pursuit Force in the works for PSP

Following the success of Pursuit Force on PSP, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Bigbig Studios are delighted to announce the highly anticipated sequel to one of the best-selling games on PSP, Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice – coming to both PSP and PlayStation®2 (PS2) this summer.
Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice follows hot on the heels of its predecessor with an action-packed Hollywood-style blockbuster for PSP and PS2 that demands new levels of speed and a fresh approach to law enforcement, as the Pursuit Force are called upon again to save Capital City from a scourge of gangs terrorising the streets. The Convicts and Warlords are back and the new gangs ripping Capital City apart are:
Raiders – Professional Raiders, specialising in striking hard and fast and staging ambushes
The Syndicate – A gang of professional bank robbers looking to steal anything of value…by any means possible
With the new gangs turning the city into a warzone, and with a new heavy handed rival arm of the police (Viper division) for the Pursuit Force to contend with, Extreme Justice is packed with new features to help the Pursuit Force rid the streets of crime. The chase becomes more lethal with faster and larger vehicles to jump between including gigantic tanks, trains and even the wings of an aeroplane. Bigger and better bad guys deliver epic boss battles, as the war on Capital City’s gangland reaches anarchic proportions.
Versatility is key, with a variety of vehicles available, including a bike and sidecar, jet skis and a hovercraft to ensure the Pursuit Force stay one step ahead of the criminals. Switching seamlessly between vehicle and ground combat, players can take out bad guys on foot in classic Hollywood cop style, and in vehicles, including a helicopter, with mounted high calibre guns for maximum destruction.
Other new features include (for PSP) four-player wi-fi and two-player split screen multiplayer (on PS2), a “Justice Bar” which offers the chance to regain strength and prolong a mission, three difficulty levels and finally, new recruits - the Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice Division has expanded and now comprises of Sarah (Air Support), Gage (High Speed Pursuit), Ash (Special Operations) and Preach (Heavy Assault) to support and interact with the player as they take down the gangs and save the city.
The blockbuster action in Extreme Justice is set to an all new Hollywood inspired storyline, making this the classic action sequel of the summer. With death defying jumps from vehicle to vehicle (also shown in ultra motion), extreme modes of transport and merciless gangs, Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice is well-equipped to be the PSP and PS2 action game of the year.

Electronic Arts today announced that Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike is currently in development for the PC. The booster pack is being developed at EA Digital Illusions (DICE) studio in Stockholm, Sweden and is slated for release in March 2007.
Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike drops gamers deep into a desperate conflict for control of Earth’s last scraps of inhabitable land following the onset of a cataclysmic new ice age. The Pan-Asian Coalition (PAC) has secretly moved into mainland Europe, using abandoned urban areas to establish new strongholds in a last-ditch push for superiority. The European Union must quickly mobilize north to dislodge PAC forces from a series of urban strongholds and regain the upper hand.
Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike features three new maps, including the infamous WWII battle scene at the Bridge at Remagen, an Alpine Titan docking harbour in Port Bavaria and a claustrophobic showdown in the Liberation of Leipzig. The booster pack also features new vehicles including the EU’s heavily armed IFV Goliath and the PAC’s hovering light IFV Hachimoto in addition to new unlocks, new badges and ribbons, new gameplay and more.
“Our number one goal with Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike was to give fans more of the close-quarters combat, increased persistence and new toys they’ve been asking for,” said Kristoffer Bergqvist, the booster pack’s producer. “We’ve also added gameplay enhancements including two brand new vehicle types in an asymmetrical set-up. Furthermore, we’re introducing the Titan game mode available into an urban setting and will debut the intensified Conquest Assault Lines game mode.”

PopCap Games®, the leading developer and publisher of casual games, today announced that its popular arcade-action game Heavy Weapon™ is now available on Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360™.
The new version, titled Heavy Weapon: Atomic Tank, features new multiplayer Mission and Survival modes, as well as an all-new “Boss Rush” mode, leader boards, high-definition graphics and other features and is available exclusively on Xbox Live Arcade. Available now for 800 Microsoft Points, Heavy Weapon can be played in trial mode prior to purchase.
“Our goal with Heavy Weapon was to make a game in the vein of the old collaborative-style arcade games like Ikari Warriors, where you and a friend could play together as a team, just enjoying the visceral sensation of blowing lots of stuff up,” said Jason Kapalka, Chief Creative Officer at PopCap. “We spent a lot of time revamping Heavy Weapon for Xbox Live Arcade, and I think it shows; the game plays and looks better, and works beautifully with the Xbox 360 controller. We haven’t been able to stop playing the beta version here in our offices, so it should be well received by the XBLA masses!”
“PopCap has done it again with Heavy Weapon – delivering classic arcade-style action with a sense of humor and a deep understanding of what makes a game truly fun,” said Greg Canessa, GM of Xbox Live Arcade at Microsoft. “Heavy Weapon is perfect for our audience: it’s simple enough for even the novice player to enjoy immediately while also offering the most inveterate gamer plenty of action and excitement. And the multiplayer modes in the new version make Heavy Weapon different every time you play with friends, whether over Xbox Live or in person.”
Heavy Weapon is a side-scrolling action game in which the player strives to defeat hordes of enemy armies in the form of tanks, jeeps, fighter jets, helicopters and other land and air vehicles. Power-ups and secret weapons that provide additional speed, shields, firepower and more help the player overcome increasingly nasty enemy forces and bosses while progressing through levels representing the oppressed (fictitious) countries over which the war is being waged. Multiplayer functionality exclusively available for the XBLA version of the game enables players to join with up to two friends in Mission mode or three friends in a Survival game, locally or on the Live Arcade service.

Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media company, today confirmed the upcoming release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles, the official expansion for the award-winning The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Shivering Isles will be released for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows this Spring. Details are presented in the exclusive cover story for Official Xbox Magazine’s (US) February issue, which hits newsstands this week.
Shivering Isles features more than 30 hours of new gameplay and allows you to explore an entirely new plane of Oblivion – the realm of Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness. Shivering Isles adds to the existing world of Oblivion so you can continue playing with your existing save game/character, or create an all new character just to explore the new content.
“We’re thrilled with the response that Oblivion has received to date and feel that Shivering Isles will offer a whole new and different experience to anyone who played and enjoyed Oblivion,” said Todd Howard, executive producer for The Elder Scrolls.
Within the Realm of Sheogorath, players can explore the two extreme sides of the god’s madness – the sublimely creative and the completely psychotic. Something is happening to the Shivering Isles and Sheogorath himself looks to you to be his champion and defend his realm and its inhabitants from destruction. Do you have the strength to survive his trials, tame a realm fraught with paranoia and despair, and wear the mantle of a God?
The Shivering Isles features a bizarre landscape split between the two sides – Mania and Dementia –filled with vast, twisting dungeons mirroring the roots of the trees they are buried within. You’ll encounter more than a dozen new creatures including hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibious Grummites. Throughout your adventure, you will discover all new items, ingredients, spells, and more, and have the talented craftsmen of Crucible and Bliss forge new armor and weapons just for you.
“The enthusiastic response we’ve received to our downloadable content has been overwhelming, and we’re excited to bring Oblivion fans a full expansion,” said Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda Softworks. “The world we’ve created for Shivering Isles is unlike anything you’ve seen or played in Oblivion and we can’t wait for folks to play it.”
