Vince Desi

Who: Vince Desi
Works for: Running With Scissors
Position: CEO
Questions: 15
Interview by: Bjorn
Date posted: 15 December 2003

PlayDevil.com had a chance to meet the big man, Mister Vince Desi from games developer and publisher "Running With Scissors" on this years ECTS. After a quite nice chit chat and all POSTAL babes around us with little ... and big ... I was plesantly surprised that this person takes all the time for everybody.
Months later we decided to put him through one of our devilish interviews so we contacted Mister Vince and asked him. Good for us since it was not a problem at all.

1- PlayDevil.com: Can you tell us something (groovy) about yourself? Who are you and whatcha doing ?

Vince: Groovy, what are u watchin Austin Powers? I've been in the game biz fro over 20 years, I started as an agent and prodcuer and then teamed up with Mike Riedel, my partner of 20 years and today we're here getting ready to go to Japan to do the POSTAL launch party...so I'm deciding what color condoms to take along.

2- PlayDevil.com: How did you guys came up with the name Running With Scissors ? Is there any logic explanation behind it?

Vince: Of course there's meaing to it, just like everthing else we do. Its simple , when you were a kid (maybe not you) and your mom told you don't run with scissors, what she was really saying is DONT DO THAT! and so we're really all about everything you shouldn't do :)

3- PlayDevil.com: Who came up with creating such a game as POSTAL ? And how did it evolve from there?

Vince: We were making games for kids, educational stuff for many major comapnies, as You can see i still cant spell so i said frig that, and we did what we always wanted to do ...MAKE GAMES that people only think about but never get the chance to actually play...thats the truth, so we created Running With Scissors to make POSTAL.

4- PlayDevil.com: Was there ever any thoughts about creating such a violent game ? I remember when it came out it caused a total negative hype from media and parents. Of course without any reason since a game is just a "game". Shouldn't be taken too serious at all.

Vince: Funny you ask that, actually we honestly never think of it as violent...to us its fun and funny. Developers have forgotten or maybe never learned that a game is a game and it should be fun to play, period, no crisis management crap or soul searching who am I now BS.

5- PlayDevil.com: Ever thought that gamers who played POSTAL too much, would do POSTAL things in real life ?

Vince: No, No, NO NO NO NO

6- PlayDevil.com: The first POSTAL game was developed in January 1996. Almost 6 years later, POSTAL 2 is in development. Were there direct plans for creating a sequel after POSTAL 1 was released ?

Vince: Actually POSTAL was released in November 1997, then it was banned in over 10 countries. We went thru alot of crap, and when we got the chance to do it all over again it made total sense becasue our fans kept writing us over and over all the years saying PLEASE MAKE POSTAL 2. So now we're thinking of POSTAL 3:)

7- PlayDevil.com: I guess for the sequel, it would be bigger, harder and more blood and voilence, right ? Or ehm no ?

Vince: It all depends on your perspective, some fans didnt like that we went with a FPS view, they wanted the original 3/4 view of the first game. As fo rmore blood, theres always more blood and violence is everywhere, I mean look at the games coming out today, they try to make violent content art, that sok, but for me its about the humor.

8- PlayDevil.com: When we met at ECTS this year .... RWS stand was full of POSTAL babes. How did u manage to get home without being .... ?

Vince: What? Drained? Exhausted? Totally wiped out? It was easy, to me the Postal Babes are like vitamins, I take'em everyday.

9- PlayDevil.com: POSTAL 2 : Share the pain.. Was it hard to create a game that has to be BETTER then the original ? And were there any discussions towards gameplay or adding / deleting internal ideas to the game ?

Vince: Absolutely. Most important we listen to the fans. After POSTAL 2 was released we immediately worked on the patch to fix the load times, and for STP, we thought about all the stuff that would make it a better and stronger game to play not just look at. Alot of gamers dont realize the value of stealth in a game, especially a FPS.

10- PlayDevil.com: The multiplayer edition would be published here in Europe by WhiptaiL Interactive. Now they are RWS ex-publishers, how is the status now of getting the game to Europe ? Will we as reviewers ever see it (hint!) and will it be available everywhere ?

Vince: I'm working on that now. We have alot of interest all over Europe but I'm trying to make the right choice. Also, it would be great to localize it so gamers can really enjoy it to the fullest.

11- PlayDevil.com: POSTAL 3 is now confirmed for the PC and XBOX. Could you tell us perhaps a bit more about what have changed towards the second version of the game? Any new things ?

Vince: Wow too early, you really want me to shoot you with some premature posturing..not my style.

12- PlayDevil.com: I guess there won't be any GameCube or PS2 version of Postal 3 ? Or is that idea still in the works ?

Vince: Hey who knows maybe we'll see a mobile version. :))

13- PlayDevil.com: POSTAL 2 Multiplayer will come out this christmas, can we expect it also in Europe at that date?

Vince: Sorry, I really tried my best but it just became impossible. In plain english it sucks because we were ready, probably the first time in video game history that a developer was ready and the publisher wasnt prepared, especially here in the US, that was part of the reason I was forced to terminate my realtionship.

14- PlayDevil.com: Should i be afraid if i let my (future) kids play with any version of POSTAL ? :-)

Vince: I don't know...I let my kids playtest when they were young, and so far only 3 out of 4 have been arrested.

15- PlayDevil.com: I was pleased with my visit to the RWS stand @ ECTS this year and happy to see that there are still developers out there that are just creating games with original ideas. THumbs up and thanks again for your time!

Vince: The pleasure is mine, just please let me say thanks to all the POSTAL fans out there, THANKS!

Thanks again to Mister 'Vince Desi', the big boss aka CEO from games developer and publisher "Running With Scissors for doing this devilish interview.
