War World
with Art Director Johnni Christensen
Position: Art Director War World
Works for: Third Wave Games
Questions: 10
Interview by: PlayDevil.com
Date posted: 10 October 2008
A new XBLA game "War World" was released last week on Xbox Live Arcade and was developed by "Third Wave Games", an Australian developer. 'War World' is a third-person MECH shooter, supporting 4 player Live Co-Op, online, over 100 campaign levels, numerous multiplayer modes and much more. Well we better stop the promo talk now because we managed to have an EXCLUSIVE interview with the 'Art Director' of "War World", Johnni Christensen.
Johnni was so kind to answer all our spicy questions.
1- What were your influences when creating your game?
The idea originally came from playing the arcade game Virtual On in the arcades. We wanted to make a game that had a similar feel, with pick up and play action and great adrenaline fueled multiplayer fun. We wanted to make a game that was extremely fast, full on and which provided a slightly different experience in both single and multiplayer to what was currently available.
2- Why XBLA, and not a full/budget retail release?
Originally we created War World for the PC platform, but we always thought that Xbox Live Arcade would be the perfect platform for a multiplayer battle game like War World. War World is very easy to get into, but it is quite hard to master and its tons of fun for shorter busts of play, which is perfect for XBLA. There aren't many other XBLA games where you can get such a full on experience as a multiplayer battle in War World with grenades, bullets and missiles flying everywhere.
3- Your game is a good looker- how important do you think graphics are to XBLA releases?
Graphics are pretty important as most people do not want to play something that visually looks awful. If a game looks terrible, many people won't give the game a chance. Great visuals will pull you into the game-world. But graphics are not the only important element to a game. A great game should really have great gameplay, plus great visuals and sound.
4- The game focuses on multiplayer- what's your favourite multiplayer game at the moment?
That's an easy one -> War World :D
5- Are there any plans for DLC for the game?
We do have plans for it, but nothing is finally decided yet.
6- How have you found the critical reception to the game so far?
We are happy that the majority of Xbox gamers who have actually played the full game, love it and are having great fun in both Single-player and Multi-player.
We are also quite happy that many gamers say that War World is one of the best looking XBLA games available today.
7- Would you consider a sequel to the game or are your plans for your
next game different?
We have tons of ideas that would be great to implement for the sequel, but we also have other game ideas up our sleeves that would be interesting to develop further.
8- Will the game be coming to WiiWare or PSN?
We believe War World would be a great title for the PSN and WiiWare, but we will have to see what the future brings…
9- Do you regret having a 50 second trial?
Demo's are always hard, you have to land somewhere between giving too much away and making it too short. In this case the demo probably ended up being too short and people don't seem to have enough time to really get a feeling of how cool the game actually is. It's always regrettable if the demo stops some people from seeing the full potential of the game. So we hope people don't judge the game on the demo, its way cooler than that.
10- How has the game been selling- has it met your expectations?
As the game is published by Ubisoft, we haven't had any sales data yet.
Thanks again to Johnni and Morten from Third Wave Games for making this interview possible.
Developed by Third Wave Games and published by Ubisoft, “War World” is available for 800 Microsoft Points worldwide.
