![]() Riotous?
With a name like ‘Rocket Riot’, you know you’re not going to get a piece of art like 'Braid', but most importantly, does the game deliver on it’s promise of loads of rockets and a big riot?
Story:
I think this game has the best story ever, to be honest. A madcap pirate steals everyone in town’s ass, and then you have to get them back by strapping a jet pack to your bum- what more could you want from a game?!?
Obviously, it’s all pointless fluff, but it’s nice to get a break from the action, and you get some nice comic-style panels during the levels that provide a little humour, and certainly adds to the game, without ever getting in the way.
Gameplay:
RR is a classic dual-joystick shooter. You move with the left stick (controlling your arse-pack) and shoot with the right stick. However, RR has a slight twist on this basic mechanic by adding a rudimentary physics engine into the mix. So you need to pull back on the stick to build up power, then aim whilst trying to allow for the fact that your shots will arc before falling away. This adds a bit more skill into the mix than with games such as 'Geo Wars'.
Generally, most levels are straight-up deathmatches with you fighting against up to 5-6 other rocket dudes at once. It sounds tough, but enemies can be killed in one hit, whereas you can take 3 hits before dying, and your health will recover (albeit very slowly) over time, so it never seems overly difficult until the later levels.
There are a couple of other modes (American football, destroy item X & find dude X), but generally, you’ll be blowing up lots of pirates, ninjas & robots with your rockets and arsenal of powerups that can be found across the various maps, which are all pretty cool, and some of which are also hilarious.
There’s 80 single-player levels, which will take an average player probably 4 hours or so to get through. When combined with the multiplayer suite, it’s clear that the game also offers excellent value for money.
