THE WALKING DEAD - 400 DAYS
Created both as a bridge between Seasons 1 and 2, and to help satisfy fans craving more, does Telltale’s latest adventure fill me with optimism or pessimism for what lies ahead?

Too Dead?

Created both as a bridge between Seasons 1 and 2, and to help satisfy fans craving more, does Telltale’s latest adventure fill me with optimism or pessimism for what lies ahead?

Storyline:

"400 Days" tells the story of five survivors at various points of the zombie outbreak – from just a few short hours to more than one year in. Each character gets their own mini episode, which normally end with, or contain one of the decision points that the series has become so renowned for.

The action is compressed into a much shorter period, so there’s far less downtime, giving the each of the chapters a generally much more intense feel. However, despite that, they are so brief that it is far more difficult to form any kind of emotional attachment with the new cast, making those tough choices feel far more detached. The episode does have a pretty decent epilogue though, which nicely wraps things together.

My one criticism would be that the characters you meet just after the outbreak don’t appear to have moved on or grown and changed since – pretty odd given I’m pretty sure another 2-300 days of surviving a zombie apocalypse would alter me significantly.

Gameplay:

This episode comes at you with a much faster pace, to the extent that it’s almost entirely story or action driven. There’s very little walking about and exploring, which is mostly fine by me, as I found those sequences to be generally the weakest part of the first season. The action sequences also seem a little tighter (especially when compared to the first couple of episodes), again showing that fan feedback is being take on board.

However, the episode is worryingly short, with all six scenes taking little more than an hour. It’s an extraordinarily brief piece of content, and whilst the quality is still very high, I wouldn’t exactly describe it as good value.

It’s also been described as a bridge into Season 2, and whilst it’s clear that Telltale don’t want to show their hand just yet, there’s no real link into Season 1, bar a single passing moment that you barely even realise, so it’s difficult to understand how 400 days will link in beyond potentially re-using some of the characters here as NPCs.
