Just Devolution?
Worms games have been the same for just about all time, so does this latest version really justify the tagline ‘revolution’?
Whilst there is a ‘story’ mode available, it’s just a collection of levels, and whilst that’s totally ok, I’d rather it wasn’t really sold as such. There’s some linked tutorials, but actually, for anyone whose played Worms before, they drag on for far, far too long over far too many levels.
The new engine has allowed for physics based weapons, and they turn out to be a neat addition, when the physics work (which they thankfully do 99% of the time). Magnets in particular offer some really nice additions, because they can suck grenades, mines and the like upwards, causing some real havoc.

Water doesn’t add a huge amount because it’s always been deadly, so just having the ability to fire it or free it from trapped places seems like a normal evolution. Gas is a bit more interesting because it spreads, and there’s also some new weapons as well. Many of those involve the new physics items, but it’s still nice to see them used in a fashion which isn’t just environmental.

The levels are decent, and the backgrounds perhaps more interesting, but otherwise the game plays much like any other Worms games. There’s now 4 different types of worm which you can include in your squad, but to be honest, many of these don’t make a huge difference. The scout is faster than the others, and can jump further, whilst the heavy can take more of a punch, but the differences between the classes aren’t perhaps as pronounced as in other class-based games.
