Another year, another update?
In recent years 2K Sports have become the masters at making video games based upon popular American sports with the undoubted highlight being their basketball games which receive the customary annual updates.
With this in mind it is no surprise that 2K Sports brings us the latest in their basketball series entitled "NBA 2K13" but this year instead of just a simple update of player rosters and a few cosmetic tweaks the developers have chosen to include a variety of new gameplay inclusions.
Will this make the game a truly slam dunking experience?
Let’s start this review by looking at the overall presentation which I can honestly describe as stunning, so much so that anyone who walks into a room could quite easily be fooled into believing that they are watching a real life NBA game in front of their very eyes. This is achieved by the game offering superb graphics, player likenesses and overall feel to how it is presented which mirrors the television broadcasts so closely that at times it is scary.
Sound is another area in which the game excels with superb on the money commentary and an excellent soundtrack which suits the sport well. Whilst I am not a particular fan of his, this is somewhat expected as the game is executive produced by JAY Z so one could expect a polished feel, particularly in the overall soundtrack.
True basketball simulation:
Basketball games are a pretty funny breed as many rely on the player having knowledge of the sport and are not all that easily accessible to novices. It would be fair to say that NBA 2K13 is one that most definitely fits in to the category of simulation rather than arcade and as a result it is most certainly beneficial if you have an understanding of the game before you consider purchasing.
This is not to say that the game will not be enjoyed by newcomers but more a word of caution that it does have a pretty steep learning curve in order to get the best from proceedings yet once you dedicate time to learning the ropes then you will certainly be in for a treat!
As previously highlighted everything about NBA 2K13 mirrors the real life game very well indeed and this reflects on the gameplay which has some super AI to ensure that matches against the computer are fair and well balanced depending on your ability. This ensures that games run very smoothly and prove enjoyable yet challenging to play.
Probably the highlight in gameplay is the change to the already very easy to use controls with this years effort now encompassing the use of the right analogue stick to perform various features including skill moves and shooting. At first I wondered if this would add complication to proceedings however my fears were allayed very early on as this new control system is an absolute joy to use and gives the player far better control over every aspect of the game. It was perhaps a risk to change the controls so drastically however I have to say that 2K Sports have absolutely nailed this, and other sports games should take note on how well this has been implemented.
