Aliens Colonial Marines Hands-On Preview:
So I got the chance to go hands on with some Deathmatch with Gearbox’s long-delayed shooter "Aliens: Colonial Marines", supposedly out in February next year.
Deathmatch is, like the AVP games, Marine vs. alien. However, itreally looks great, especially on the PC which was the build we were playing, and captures the mood well. It certainly seemed to have an edge over the last Rebellion-developed game.
There was a real need, especially in the darker areas to use the movement scanner. Aliens move pretty much silently, so it led to a tense environment that most other shooters fail to replicate. The Aliens can get on walls, ceilings, and were suitably powerful, despite their limitations of basically being melee creatures only.
You can also bring in reinforcements of stronger alien creatures at certain points, although it wasn’t clear how these were triggered (it seemed to be when one team got too far ahead, as opposed to being perk based).
The gunplay seemed good, whilst the sound fx and look of the guns was spot on- Gearbox have clearly done their homework replicating the look and feel of the universe which fans love so much.
The game also neatly requires teamwork in order to defeat the aliens, who were more lone rangers in the way they seemed to work and had loads of special moves. The boggo marines, in comparison, were no match in most 1v1 situations, so going alone was like signing your own death warrant.
Overall, the game seemed pretty fun, and hopefully if and when it is ever released the rest of the game will live up to my brief time with it.
