Gamescom 2012 Preview: Batman: Arkham City: Armoured Edition:
Batman comes to the Wii U as a launch title, and is already pretty much ready to go, with all of the Goty content and some Wii U extras. Warner have added in some new gadgets, abilities, and touch screen controls, and made some decent use of the Wii U Controller.
For example, you can use detective mode by holding up the controller to the screen, so you can still see both views. It’s also possible to control gadgets using the screen, although this was at times a little disorientating and disconcerting. I’ll put that down to inexperience with the Wii U though, as this was my first time actually playing with the console rather than some video or developer-led demo.
A lot of the features looked to ensure the player makesless use of the pause menu because quick gadgets, map, radar etc. are now all on the Wii U screen, so they just need a glance down.
You also get your objectives and PDA contacts speaking to you from the screen as well. It’s treated as Batman’s PDA, and it all worked and felt pretty cool.
However, graphically there’s not much to write home about, with the game certainly looking no better than the 360 or PS3 version.
Having said that, I was very impressed by the Wii U screen, which was surprisingly crisp and detailed, especially when the action was transferred to it.
A full price might make it hard to swallow upon release, but Armoured Edition still looks like a great game with some worthwhile improvements made.
