The fact you can’t carry two things at once like that is just plain stupid to be honest. However, the positives far outweigh the negatives, and it’s cool to feel like a total stealth-badass as you creep up on some dozy guard and break his neck.
Graphics and Sound:
Graphically, Riddick is really impressive. When you look at comparison videos, you can see that it actually hasn’t improved a great deal apart from the healthy resolution upgrade. However, it’s still a fine looking game, although it’s not quite up to the best standards of this generation, whereas last time round, the game was one of the standout titles. Having said that, Vin Diesel himself looks an awful lot better than he does in Wheelman, and is also animated a lot better.
Therefore, given that that game was built from the ground up for the new consoles still means that this is quite an achievement. The negatives are the constant loading times and occasional dodgy texture, but overall I left feeling immersed and impressed.
The sound quality is just as good, with all the fantastic voice acting that was there before, a new 5.1 mix, and new voice acting and music for Dark Athena that is all top notch. Vin is also awesome in this (if you are a fan of his gravely voice and cheesy one-liners, that is), and again, the whole presentation is really impressive.
Multiplayer:
I’m getting pretty annoyed with Starbreeze and their total inability to craft a good multiplayer game, especially as they promise so much. Then they add a load of impossible multiplayer achievements.
Riddick is laggy for the most part, and on top of that, the community is already pretty small, and pretty much no-one will therefore ever get all 1000 points. The one decent mode, Pitch Black, is above average, but I can’t see it being played in a few months time to be honest.
Conclusion:
Escape from Butcher Bay is still a fantastic little game. With the graphical update, it also looks fantastic. However, Dark Athena isn’t brilliant, having been obviously cobbled together to make it longer with the switch to Atari as publisher.
The multiplayer is also pretty rubbish with the exception of the Pitch Black mode. However, that one mode alone, along with the great original and some decent content in Dark Athena still makes this new game a very strong choice for anyone who loves shooters or just has a passing interest in Vin Diesel’s gruff one-liners.
Pros:
+ Good graphics
+ Story is pretty nice + Good amount of violence Cons: - Dark Athena
