FEATURE: PLAYDEVIL'S GAME OF THE YEAR 2011 AWARDS
Another year has almost passed and we've looked at the 5 most interesting games of 2011. Which one will be our "Game of the Year 2011"?

Posted by PlayDevil.com Staff on Dec 29, 2011 11:00 (144 days ago)

2011 is almost over but nevertheless our team has managed to get you their 5 most impressive games of 2011. Some will be surprised that some games made it to our "GOTY" list but other games will be no suprise at all.

Enjoy our "Game of the Year 2011 Awards" and I bet you're as curious as we are to find out who made it to "Number ONE".

5. Hard Corps: Uprising (Alex)

My fifth decision was the hardest, while the four above this all battled for first place, number five was a tussle between a separate set of games for the final spot. Space Marine, Shadow of the Damned, Batman and Dead Space 2 all failed the cut leaving Konami’s downloadable Hard Corps: Uprising to take the final spot.

A traditional side scrolling platform shooter, Uprising is a successor to the Contra series. It is as hard as the original games too, but with a play mode that includes a level up mechanic that makes the game progressively easier in an incredibly satisfying way. Watching enemies that made levels near impossible on the first pass die in an instant with new a newly powered up character provides a sense of achievement that was never reached in the original Contra games.

This is all toped by animated hand drawn characters and environments that makes Hard Corp: Uprising feel like an anime brought to life. While in some games attractive art is a bonus, in Uprising it is vital as they game style necessitates regularly repeating levels. It is all a perfect throw back to the early nineties in terms of gameplay, but with beautiful modern HD graphics.

5. Williams Pinball Classic (Mark)

An interesting inclusion into my top 5 games of the year as this game has been available in most parts of the world since before 2011. It was not until the mid point of the year that European gamers received this classic pinball package.

The game features 13 classic Williams tables all of which are presented in great detail and offer some of the best table physics I have ever seen in any pinball game. This, along with some excellent challenges make this the best pinball title I have ever played.

5. DiRT 3 (Ian)

After an instalment that was too much about ‘bros’ than driving, DiRT returned with a genuinely exciting game, that perfected nearly all forms of rallying. It perhaps needed a few more courses, and the new menu schemes were not ideal, but the quality of the racing was unmatched, with brilliant weather, handling, and a fantastic sense of speed, not to mention some great multiplayer modes.

4. Super Mario 3D Land (Alex)

Having brought a 3DS day of release I had been waiting since March for a game to justify my purchase. With plenty of games reaching me, including the wonderful Zelda, I was still waiting for that that definitive unique title that would justify the system. Then came Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, the Nintendo heavy weights that always drag a system into the limelight. But where Mario Kart 7 iterates, Super Mario 3D Land innovates.

Super Mario 3D Land will do much to define the 3DS in the coming year. In its use of the systems depth functions to controlled cameras, 3D Land is able to create a wonderful experience only achievable on the handheld system. A great array of levels and environments all continue to mix things up and keep the action fresh in a way only Nintendo seems to know how, introducing whole new mechanics for a single level and then abandoning them for something new before it is possible to tire of it. A perfect Mario title in the vein of 64 and Galaxy.

4. Beyond Good & Evil HD (Mark)

The only XBLA release which has made my top five is a HD remake of a game first released on the original Xbox.

Beyond good & evil HD offers a beautifully presented and lengthy story with some superb character design and narrative and proves a truly engaging experience from start to finish. The game is without doubt an absolute steal for it’s 800ms point cost and unquestionably makes a mockery of the XBLA pricing structure.

4. Forza Motorsport 4 (Ian)

I was expecting a serious case of fatigue when I picked up my copy of Forza 4, after spending 70+ hours across 2 & 3. But despite a track roster that is very familiar, the improved AI and career mode, coupled with the new affinity system (and my love of Alfa Romeo) meant I sunk another 20 hours in a week, then continued to play the game as if the other games had never existed. The next game needs some improvements, but still the best looking and playing racing game of 2011.

3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Alex)

The original Deus Ex was released while I was at university. It introduced me to a gaming world with consequence as I made choices selected powers that could drastically change the story and gameplay for me in a very permanent way. It created a fascination in me for gaming as more than just an action based distraction or trashy stories, and informs much of my current opinion of games.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution certainly felt simplified from the old PC game, but with improved combat controls and a sleek futuristic Blade Runner style. Certainly in some ways the original has remained superior to me, with a greater willingness to force permanent choices on the player in terms of upgrades with choices between powers. But Human Revolution does allow character specialisation in a less binary way, allowing players to adapt a character to suit their own play style and play as they want, making use of improved combat and stealth mechanics.

Most importantly though for Human Revolution is that after years of playing my RPGs in wastelands and fantasy worlds, the future noir world is a breath of fresh air. Hopefully it is a style more games will look to adopt, especially if they can keep it this beautiful, as it is a fascinating setting if done well and is relatively under utilised in games.

3. Battlefield 3 (Mark)

In recent years there has been a real battle between the Battlefield and COD games to see which comes out on top as the best console FPS.

In it’s defence I have not included MW3 simply as I must be one of the only people yet to play it. One reason for this is that I am finding the multiplayer of Battlefield 3 truly engaging thanks in no small part to the epic action scenes and intense battles over some superbly designed maps.

The single player may not quite live up to the multiplayer but both are presented superbly with incredibly detailed war zones and some of the best graphics I am yet to experience on the system.

3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Ian)

Reports from E3 were worrying, but Deus Ex turned out to be a brilliant game. A huge world to explore, a brilliant take on the original’s upgrade system, and a great dialogue system, this is the way forwards for stealth gaming.

Gunplay and bosses were not brilliant, but this is the game that Alpha Protocol should have been, all in a beautifully realised near-future setting, with the best plot of any game this year, hands down (yes, even better than Skyrim!)

2. Rayman Origins (Alex)

I had never played a Rayman title before, but Rayman: Origins blew me away. Perfect old school 2D platforming with graphics and a slapstick humour that were lifted straight from the most incredible European cartoons. Rayman was surprise I would never have predicted.

Rayman: Origins aesthetic is backed up by informed game design that constantly layers on new abilities and mechanics. It provides a constant challenge but always seems to drive the action forward with only the desire to reach every collectible making any area impossible (especially the time trials). It is a game that will keep me going for a long time to come, with the exuberant four player cooperative mode and my desire to obtain every collectable providing more longevity than most similar titles. And as I continue to play I will be grinning every second with shear joy.

2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Mark)

I will be totally honest and say that I was never the biggest Oblivion fan so the release of Skyrim never got me too excited. However after so many recommendations I decided to take the plunge and I have to say that if you are willing to put in the time needed then this will really blow you away.

Skyrim should come with a health warning saying ‘This game could take over your life,’ such is it’s epic scale which is backed up by some truly immersive gameplay and sublime overall presentation.

Undoubtedly Skyrim represents one of the most complete and best value games currently available and is one title which should be experienced by anyone who has any kind of interest in video gaming.

2. RAGE (Ian)

Probably the most controversial game in my top 5, but I just loved Rage. The vehicular multiplayer wasn’t brilliant, but the single player was a delight- huge, varied, with sublime graphics and animation, some great co-op levels, and a brilliant arsenal that encouraged different playstyles. The game also had a surprisingly interesting and diverse plot, and some great voice-acting, things you don’t expect from ID. The idea of a 20 hour MW3 would fill me with dread, but I’d happily sink another 20 into Rage.
