![]() Plus or minus?
'Blue Dragon' was already a fairly average RPG on the 360, which hasn’t had many JRPGs for it. However, it did have a cool art style. But with a move to 2D, and only some extra content added, rather than a change in story, can this "Blue Dragon Plus" deliver anything fresh and new to the DS RPG scene?
Story:
The story hasn’t changed at all from the 360 version- it’s still about some spiky-haired Japanese kid who’s a bit of a geek who has to suddenly save the universe with a group of other kids and dudes.
It’s all really generic, and even the pretty cool cartoon-esque graphical style doesn’t make it into the static cut-scenes very well. There is a lot of story to get through, but you may not get through it all.
Gameplay:
Gameplay is again, pretty standard RPG fare, which again, when combined with fairly average audio, generic graphics and storylines, don’t make for the best combination. Don’t get me wrong, it’s all solid stuff, with meaty enemies to fight, a pretty good combat system that seems fair, and a reasonable level of difficulty.
However, if you own a final fantasy, the world ends with you, chronotrigger, or one of countless other DS RPG classics, you’ll probably find yourself returning to their worlds over this one. If, however, this is your only DS RPG, it’s all serviceable stuff, and you can’t really go wrong with it as a title either, should you have exhausted the other DS RPGs out there somehow.
It’s a real shame, because it comes so close to greatness, but loses out at the final hurdle thanks to the generic atmosphere of the whole thing. The game’s main strength though, if you want value for money, is that the game really is huge, taking the 30 hour plus 360 game, then adding some generous chunks of new content on top.
Whilst fans of the original may find it difficult to squeeze out value, new players will find a massive game that will take them weeks to finish if you do get engrossed in it.
