![]() Over here ... DC Comics!
As the title suggests, the Mortal Kombat Universe has been spliced with that of DC Comics, and whilst it’s a neat piece of marketing for the troubled Midway, fans of both Mortal Kombat and DC will be delighted to put together some dream matches between characters from each universe in "Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe".
Story:
Midway haven’t shied away from attempting to create a story out of this very combustible union, enlisting the help of comic writers, Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray.
There’s a story mode for each universe and they both share the common goal of finding out just as to how the characters from the other universe have appeared in their own. It’s all rather cheesy, but, come on, this is Mortal Kombat we’re talking about here, the game that misspells the word “combat” with a K.
Gameplay:
Lets talk characters, the game wisely divides the fighters equally between the two, with 10 combatants from each universe. Mortal Kombat characters include a cast of favourites, which includes the likes of Liu Kang, Scorpion and Sub Zero, whilst the DC side of things makes excellent use of Batman, The Joker and Superman amongst others.
The game takes a back to basics approach and certainly has more in common with Mortal Kombat II than it does any of the other recent games in the series. It makes for a good entry level fighter, with few real complexities to speak of beyond deciding who that next dream match should involve.
There’s none of that complex stance changing, although the breakers do return, enabling you to once again cancel out your opponents offence. A new Rage Meter, which allows you to power up your character, breaking through an opponents defence and absorbing a number of their attacks, is useful but once again it isn’t something that requires any skill.
Also new is the Freefall Kombat, a new take on knocking your opponent into another section of the arena. Freefall Kombat sees the two fighters tumbling at speed towards the ground with the potential of punches to be traded with one another, and when the fall comes to an end, the combatant on top obviously scores the damage.
