![]() Too Little, Too Late?
"Too Human" has been in development for over 10 years in some shape or form, and is finally out. It has also been hyped to death by Microsoft, and the game’s director has also sparked an internet debate the likes of which has never been seen before.
Therefore, despite the massive furore surrounding the game, will the game live up to the impossibly high expectations surrounding it?
Story:
Too Human is released with its own original story, and clearly it has had a lot of thought put into it. Its sci-fi cyberpunk, telling a modified version of Beowulf and other Norse legends, but in a futuristic setting, where goblins and trolls are mechanical beasts, and cyberspace is the only place that harks back to a lush, green, Norse world.
Sometimes the script can be clumsy, and at other times, a little non-existent (the levels are long, and there is little story in between them, followed by very heavy sections), but when it is right, it is excellent.
However, lets hope for more in the sequel, with better pacing and more consistency, because the makings of an epic tale are there.
Gameplay:
All this may leave you underwhelmed, and Too Human’s marmite gameplay won’t help you much either. It’s easy to dislike at first.
The camera is pretty wonky, and the right stick doesn’t control it, despite this being a 3rd person game. Instead, there is a clunky centre camera button that is assigned to LB, and that jerks everything about wildly.
Next, some won’t like the right stick attack controls. They can be unintuitive, although once you get used to them you can pull off combos with ease and probably better than you could do with the face buttons.
Then there is the death sequence, an unskippable 30 second sequence that’s cool about twice, then becomes incredibly annoying, especially considering you will die a lot (there’s even an achievement for 100 deaths- about 30 minutes of watching the same thing over and over).
But the meat of the action is a Diablo-style dungeon crawler, where you face off against hundreds of enemies, and bash them up, collecting as much l00t as possible.
The combat is solid, and there are vast numbers of items, rare drops and coloured armours to pick up. You can also buff yourself with runes and charms, and create your own weapons and armour with blueprints. Then you have 50 levels available, and you have several skill trees to level up.
However, lets hope for more in the sequel, with better pacing and more consistency, because the makings of an epic tale are there.
There are 5 base classes to use, each of which plays differently. Here is what will divide people. You will spend literally hours in the menus, buffing your character and checking out your new items, which you will literally get every minute or two. If this sounds cool to you, then great, otherwise you will not like/appreciate/find easy Too Human.
However, once you get addicted to l00t, you will find the game difficult to put down. You’ll complete it, but you won’t have hit level 50, so you’ll go do it again in co-op with your saved character.
