![]() A long time coming:
It seems an age since the last Gran Turismo game was released (2004 in fact) and even longer since the announcement that "Gran Turismo 5" would be coming to the Playstation 3.
In between this time the PS3 owners were treated to Gran Turismo 5: Prologue which in essence was nothing more than a demo of what was to come. At the time nobody expected to have to wait until the end of 2010 for the complete Gran Turismo 5 experience to be released but as the old saying goes: “The best things come to those who wait” but does this apply to Gran Turismo 5?
The following review will reveal all.
Game content:
If ever you needed evidence as to why the game was so long in production then you only have to look at the staggering amount of content which somehow has been squeezed onto a single disc.
Firstly the game contains over one thousand vehicles which can be obtained throughout the vast career mode through competing in races across numerous locations around the world. Whilst this seems incredible it is highly unlikely that the player will ever experience every vehicle on offer due to the time it takes to earn enough credits to purchase them.
The main aspect of the GT5 experience is the GT mode which enables the player to create their own home screen packed with features such as auctions, car customising and tune ups in addition to both the A Spec and B Spec sections which both offer an excellent amount of gameplay and variety (more of that later).
To add further value is the online aspect which offers both car auctions and online races in addition to an arcade mode which proves perfect for the times when you simply fancy a quick race rather than getting absorbed in the GT mode.
It is almost impossible to cover everything in the content of GT5 and the above just gives a flavour of what is on offer and I have to say that overall GT5 must rank as one of the most complete game packages ever made in terms of content and certainly means that you will be guaranteed to get your money worth with this title.
Presentation:
Again this is another area in which GT5 really excels as almost everything is incredibly slick and beautiful to both look at and navigate.
Admittedly it does have some faults most noticeably in loading times which sometime take far too long. To help with this the game can (and most definitely should) be installed to the hard drive and whilst this does speed up proceedings some sections still take a little too long to load for my liking. Perhaps I am being too picky with this especially considering the amount of content on the disc however I just found that sometimes waiting for races stopped me from getting as engrossed in proceedings as I would have hoped.
Visually everything about GT5 is sublime. This starts with the customisable home section and continues to vehicles, worldwide locations, scenery and weather conditions. Undoubtedly the game pushes the PS3 to its limits and must rank as one of the best looking titles available on the system.
Sound wise is a similar story with the choice of music proving inspired as each tune fit’s the races perfectly and this is a similar story whilst browsing menus and auctions. Vehicle sounds again have been implemented superbly well and highlights even further just how much time and due care has been put in to producing one of the PS3’s most anticipated titles.
Gameplay:
The gameplay in GT5 mainly focuses around the aforementioned GT mode and online multiplayer with the GT mode in particular offering a nice amount of diversity through both the A Spec and B Spec events.
A Spec puts the player in the role of a driver embarking on a career containing numerous events across various skill levels. Prior to undertaking challenges in this mode the player has to complete driving licences which act as a tutorial of how to get the best from the experience.
In the A Spec mode the game throws up countless hours of play time as races and events need to be completed in order to earn enough credits to purchase and upgrade cars and believe me this certainly proves very engrossing as you attempt to own as many of the one thousand vehicles as possible.
