![]() Introduction:
"Fallout 3" was one of the runaway successes of 2008, and January has brought us the first of the three promised pieces of content for the game, but is it any good?
Story:
"Operation Anchorage" is part of Fallout Lore and history, and thus is presented as a simulation. You get a radio broadcast and get to discover a new location where you enter this new world. It's fairly combat heavy and story-lite compared to much of the rest of the game, but it's still an interesting opportunity to learn some more of the fallout backstory.
Gameplay:
Expect the same level of gameplay from Anchorage, but with a greater focus on combat. Also, it's all about taking down a load of humans rather than various monsters and the like. This starts off as being refreshing, but after 3-4 hours, becomes a little tiresome as fallout 3's strongpoint was never combat.
Also, the addition of health and ammo replenishing machines is also questionable, as it removes part of the strategy. Equally, placing for these is normally really generous, although in a couple of places, unnecessarily severe. This makes them seem like they have been haphazardly placed to an extent.
However, with the story pieces, the great new equipment you get for completing the quest (which you get to take back into the main game world, and is really quite powerful and in great condition), and some new achievements, the package does some together quite nicely.
It also introduces some interesting new characters in the form of outcast Brotherhood, which would be really interesting to see explored in future DLC.
Graphics And Sound:
Graphically and aurally, this brings nothing new to the game other than the new environment. This in itself is totally new and pretty good to see something other than a wasteland, although the ice focus itself does wear thin by the end.
Vocals are competent, but no better than in the original game, with many of the original gripes remaining.
Conclusion:
At 800 points for about 3-4 hours of content, this DLC is not the best value for money, but it is an interesting piece of content, which adds a little variety to the game.
In addition, it's an easy 100 new points, and helps you work your way towards another good 100 points of the old achievements- therefore this comes relatively recommended!
Pros:
+ Achievements!
+ New environment + Different focus Cons: - Too much combat?
