FEATURE: EUROGAMER EXPO 2010 IMPRESSIONS![]() Posted by PlayDevil.com Staff on Oct 5, 2010 10:48 (Oct 5, 2010 10:48) |
![]() Well, the "Eurogamer Expo 2010" was bigger and better than ever this year, with a move to the imperious Earl’s Court exhibition centre. I also got to get in early with my press pass this year, which allowed me plenty of time to bring you my impressions of all the latest games.
The event was absolutely fantastic, and has now become a stable of the UK games calendar- here’s hoping for an even bigger and better event this year after the Eurogamer guys managed to sell the place out once again.
Anyway, to the games!
Fable 3
One of the first games to catch your eye as your arrive is Fable 3. The demo showed off the new combat style to be found in Fable 3, which is more visceral than in previous games, and is actually quite bloody. In fact, the game also seemed more combat focused than before.
It was also good to have some AI help with you along the way. Graphically, the game is clearly a Fable game, and everything seemed in tip top condition; fans of the series will no doubt find a lot to like here.
Gran Turismo 5
I played GT5 twice, once in 2D using a wheel and pedals, and once in 3D using a pad. Whichever way you play, GT5 looks totally stunning, and is probably one of the best looking games of all time. In 3D, the effect is more subtle than with some of the other games on show, but looks all the better for it.
However, I didn’t like the way that the game actually played. With a wheel it was virtually unplayable, with a twitchy wheel and awful ABS that spins the car under braking. With a pad everything was better, but it still felt too twitchy, even with a rock solid car like an Audi R8.
I’m loathe to say it, but whilst this game looks super, I’m not convinced it is a Forza beater at the minute.
MotorStorm Apocalypse
Another 3D game, MotorStorm trades some visual finesse for a marked 3D effect, but some of the explosions and 3D effects are simply stunning.
I’m a bit disappointed that none of the 3D games have any effects that pop out of the screen towards you, like in the cinema, but never mind.
As a game, it’s just like any other game in the series, so you’ll already know whether you’ll like this- whilst the destructive city environment is really excellent.
Rock Band 3
You know what Rock Band is like, but I’ve had a go with the keyboards and the Pro Guitars. The keyboard has no price point yet, but providing it is not extortionate will be an essential addition.
One standard, you just use the first 5 keys, and it still feels totally awesome, especially on keyboard heavy tracks. Pro uses all the keys, and is tough, but looks great. Pro guitar, though, is just that. You basically play the song, and it will be an aid to actually teach yourself the guitar if you’re interested. If that doesn’t sound like fun, then you need not apply!
Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout New Vegas has just gone gold, and this was a demo that really excited me, it looks and sounds just like Fallout, but in a new map, offering hours of new gameplay.
If you liked Fallout 3, then this will be a must have game when it is released at the end of the month.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
I tried out the multiplayer mode of this latest AC title, and it looks stunning. It’s a great idea, giving you different targets, and forcing you to use special abilities, free running and action to kill your target.
It’s very different from any other multiplayer game out there, and it should prove to be an interesting diversion, especially with a new single player addition to AC2.
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
More multiplayer was on offer here, and it was some of the most fun that I’ve ever had. With 4 cops versus 4 racers, the action was very fast paced, and nicely balanced.
The game introduces NFS World style power-ups, and you can destroy the other cars using spike traps, helicopters, and even an EMP cannon. It’s all ridiculous, over-the-top stuff, and was massively good to play.
Dragon Age 2
Dragon Age 2 was running on the 360, and it’s just crazy how much better it looks than the first game. It also plays quite different too, with much more of an emphasis on stylish combat, rather than the dice-rolls of the first game. It basically does for Dragon Age was Mass Effect 2 did to that series.
It streamlines things, and ups the style and action levels. All the dialogue options are still there, so it looks refreshingly similar, whilst having some different aspects too. The demo was fairly short, and it remains to be seen whether all the changes will please hardcore RPG fans, but Dragon Age 2 certainly looks like one to watch.
Goldeneye
I played some split screen of the new Bond game, and it was interesting to play the game. It doesn’t feel much like the original, being much faster paced, and having auto-aim aplenty. It also felt weird playing split-screen after a day of linked up consoles, so the graphics didn’t seem up to much.
I felt that as you barely have any health, the auto-aim was too great, as the first person to see the other is basically guaranteed a kill.
In the end
There were so many other games out there, including Gears of War 3, Brink, Dead Space 2, Bulletstorm and Medal of Honor on show that I didn’t have time to have more than a watch of, and more time would have been useful, but I had a fantastic time, and am totally enthused about all of the great games coming out over the next few months!
While we were there we also took '11 screenshots' from the show. You can view our Eurogamer Expo 2010 screens right here.
