![]() Does this game deserve a watery grave?
"Aqua" is a dual joystick shooter with a difference- it has a proper story and level design- does it pay off for this XBLA release?
Story:
Aqua has quite a nice story concept. It’s set in a steampunk universe where two rival empires are fighting a naval war against each other. Unfortunately, beyond that, it all falls flat.
The story, told in some nicely animated comic-book style sequences, is convoluted and confusing, and the script writing and voice acting is abysmal. It’s a shame, because the initial concept is so great.
Gameplay:
Dual Joystick shooters are normally quick blasts, so it’s refreshing to see Aqua’s take on the genre. Unfortunately though, not all of the ideas stack up. There are three ships, a variety of weapons for each, and several upgrades. Unfortunately, the upgrades don’t seem to make much of a difference, and neither do the ships.
Level design is normally pretty decent, but the mission structure is based too much around escort missions, which can be frustrating as the larger ships move incredibly slowly. This is one game best played on easy to start with if you want to lessen the frustration.
You can replay the missions to gain collectables, and play on the hardest difficulty, but bar a couple of achievements, there’s not that much point. There are a couple of alternative modes, but I’d seen everything that I wanted to after about 2-3 hours, making the game questionable value. I did have fun in that time, but the game could have easily been improved as well.
