Explosive Graphics - Sound:
Graphically, Split/Second is lovely. Really, really lovely. It moves brilliantly, with a great sense of speed, and despite some outlandish, outrageous explosions, it all stays rock solid, and performs brilliantly.
The courses and cars have all been loving crafted, and the explosions are simply phenomenal- I have no idea how it looks so good in motion normally, let alone when a 500-tonne boat is careering down the track, throwing propellers down the road. My one concern is that there are a lack of tracks- there are only 3 or 4, with several variations however- but not every variation has a ‘huge’ element to it, leaving them feel considerably weaker in structure than the tracks where there are 2 or even three route changers.
Sound is also fantastic. The engine noises may be made up, but they are deep, roaring V8’s, which sound joyous when revved hard, and even better when in an enclosed space, such as tunnel. Explosions have huge amounts of bass, and the music, whilst limited in the amount recorded, is brilliant- operatic, fast paced, and suited well to the action – like a great TV show.
Multiplayer:
Multiplayer is definitely the weak part of the game- whilst many of the modes are available- they never really feel like they were designed for multiplayer- and even with only 8 players, the game can suffer from lag.
The matchmaking options are basic too, and the ranking system is terrible- my first race I moved up two ranks with a 4th place, but in the 2nd race, I moved straight back down to a 99 with a 4th- which is just bizarre! It’s a shame, because if the multiplayer had been of the quality of the single player, then Split/ Second would have really stood out as a superior quality title.
Conclusion:
"Split/ Second: Velocity", in my opinion, just about gets the nod over Blur. With a much better single player experience, but far worse multiplayer, it comes down to a few things. Graphically, I prefer the look of Split/ Second, whilst nothing can beat destroying another player by crashing a plane on top of them! However, with a more limited roster of courses, and the aforementioned lack of multiplayer options, it is a close run thing.
If you want great scripted action, then this is the game for you. If you want all-out multiplayer action, then Blur is for you instead. Either way, this is a great game for anyone looking for high velocity racing.
Pros:
+ Explosive action
+ Great Racing + Well paced single player Cons:
- Multiplayer options
- Multiplayer rankings
- Lack of courses
