Graphics / Sound:
Its hard not to fall back on clichés, charming and cute spring instantly to mind but if I was feeling less generous I would simply say serviceable or uninspired. They are clear and never obscure what is going on even during frantic multiplayer sessions. Each area and the different items they bring also manages to look distinct and at least give a nice sense of progression as you trudge through the campaign.
Similarly the accompanying sound for each area does serve to improve a distinct feel for each area but does nothing to set Polar Panic apart. In game music is apt for the mood of the game, giving a festive wintery atmosphere. It’s worth noting that the opening music sounds more than a little similar other recent downloadable titles. This proved jarring for me as the intro screen with its accompanying theme conjured memories of Trine, a game in no way similar to Polar Panic, setting a very different mood to what I expect was anticipated.
Multiplayer:
Survival also includes the game multiplayer. Local play only, having multiple players allows you help each other survive by killing the oncoming hordes, or hindering each other by throwing blocks in to your friends path. It good little party game for a few friends, but can end quickly if everyone isn’t playing nice. Think Horde mode crossed with Bomberman and you will have a good idea of the mechanics at work.
Conclusion:
"Polar Panic" is a cute action puzzler. It could argue it has something for everyone, but the aesthetic and difficulty leaves me feeling it is best suited to puzzle fans. Action sections are poorly implemented as anything but a cursory diversion in party play, with the story campaign only serving to sour you on the other fun the package offers. If you are into puzzlers it is worth a look, but after wrapping up the 50 puzzle challenges you would be better off putting it down and only jumping back in for multiplayer fun.
Pros:
+ Good puzzle mode
+ Fun local multiplayer party game + Not a bad length for the price point Cons:
- Uninspired graphics
- Dull unbalanced story mode - Puzzle mode is the only one that really kept my attention
