![]() Welcome to the Dark Side:
Prior to playing "Darksiders" on the Playstation 3 I had heard so much about the game being a cross between Zelda, God of War and Devil May Cry. Personally I could only see this as being a positive as all three of those series have had hugely enjoyable games in different respects.
It does not take long to appreciate where the inspiration for Darksiders comes from but despite resembling these game it certainly does not stop Darksiders from being a very enjoyable game which deserves it’s own praise.
Story:
Developer Vigil Games have given us a rather enjoyable storyline with the player taking control of a character called War whom is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse who has found himself sent to Earth to fight the final battle between Heaven, Hell and Earth.
The game starts with War battling against one of Hell’s leaders and after being defeated is sent to face Hell’s council where he is sentenced to death. War manages to plead his case and talks himself into being sent back to Earth to find out how the apocalypse started and why he was the only one of the Four Horsemen to be summoned. In order to ensure he sticks by his mission he is accompanied by a watcher whom assists War when needed but also punishes him if he tries to stray from his task.
I have tried to sum up the story without giving too much away and whilst it may sound a little confusing it flows pretty well and actually proves absorbing when playing. This is assisted by the well animated cut scenes which certainly help to explain the storyline rather than proving to upset the pace of the game.
The main danger with this game was to lean more towards the action rather than story and I have to say that the developers have struck a good balance between the two to create an enjoyable gaming experience.
Gameplay:
When a game has such an impressive storyline and graphics there is always a danger that the gameplay will suffer as a result and Darksiders is one of those titles that has some excellent gameplay but falls just short of being considered superb.
Undoubtedly the game is action packed and is backed by the excellent use of a destructive environment in which almost anything can be utilised as weapons whether that being cars to benches and many more things which certainly help particularly in the harder battles.
Other aspects of weaponry is also on the excellent side with the character starting with just basic attacks with hands and swords but this soon gathers pace with upgrades to magic, projectiles, destructive powers, abilities to glide and more.
Once you have played for a while (which is probably after about an hour) and improved your character this is when the game really shines and the gameplay picks up pace with more intense battles and action scenes.
Whilst the action flows thick and fast it does come at a price and this is that the action can at times feel repetitive thanks to the needless amounts of button bashing needed on many occasions. Certainly this is not always the case but I quite often found that repetitive mashing could see me progress rather than using any tactical attacks.
