Without doubt one of the stand out aspects is the customisation of weapons which can be done at various points when enough money is found. The game sells itself as having ‘The most advanced weapon customisation ever seen in a video game’ and whilst this is a bold statement I have to say is extremely impressive and does alter how the game is played and this is for the better it must be said.
Graphics:
As soon as the story starts you are presented with the cut scene highlighting the terrorist attack and from this point on there are explosions galore with whole suburbs seeming to be destroyed at will and this starts as being jaw dropping in it’s presentation and gets better the more you progress.
Environments are another pleasing aspect and whilst I have never had the pleasure of visiting Shanghai the whole look has a nice Oriental feel and this certainly does well to absorb the player into the game.
Character design is also something which has been put together well with Salem and Rios standing out as expected. The only downside is that the vast number of enemies do look almost identical barring a few and whilst I appreciate that terrorists in uniform are likely to look almost the same it does lead to some of the frantic battles throwing up a real sense of déjà vu as you get the feeling that once one enemy is killed up pops his identical twin brother.
Multiplayer:
It is clear that the game is designed to be played co-operatively with a human player and whilst it is very enjoyable played with a computer player it never seems quite right none more so than when issuing commands and using the aggro commands which can be crucial to progression.
The multiplayer also requires players to work together throughout trough assisted jumps, revival of injured partners, co-op shielding and as previously mentioned tactical approaches to gameplay.
Without doubt the whole experience of Army of Two: The 40th day stands out as being a very enjoyable game made even better when played with a friend and whilst it still falls short of being classed as brilliant it is certainly a very welcome addition to the vast array of enjoyable multiplayer games currently on the market.
Conclusion:
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with how good "Army of two: The 40th day" is and it is fair to say that it is far better than the original.
Whilst the game still has it’s faults it has shown a dramatic improvement on it’s predecessor and is a very welcome addition to the vast array of shoot em up available made even better by a solid multiplayer experience.
Pros:
+ Nicely presented
+ Superb co-operative gameplay + Massive improvement over Army of two + Excellent weapon customisation Cons:
- Linear level design
- Enemy AI could be better - May not get the recognition it deserves thanks to it’s predecessor’s mixed reviews
