AXEL & PIXEL REVIEW![]() Posted by PlayDevil.com Staff on Jan 8, 2010 12:35 (Jan 8, 2010 12:35) |

In order for the game to be less repetitive at the end of each of the seasons the game takes a welcome turn away from the puzzle style and throws up a more interactive stage involving such things as piloting hot air balloons, driving off road vehicles rhythm action mini games and quick time events. Whilst this may be seen as a somewhat risky strategy I personally welcome their inclusion as it does offer something different from the norm although hardcore puzzle fans may be of a different opinion.
The only downside to the very enjoyable gameplay is that the game is a little on the short side with twenty four levels which dependant on player skill could be completed fairly quickly. This however should not put off any potential buyers of what is a very enjoyable game and not forgetting that with the current pricing of XBLA games this one can still be seen as a bit of a bargain.
Conclusion:
I approached "Axel and Pixel" not knowing what to expect but soon found that the presentation and gameplay really drew me in to the game which could be seen as a real sleeper hit on the XBLA service.
The only danger of this unique and enjoyable title not becoming a success as that potential buyers may see this as yet another puzzle game however let me assure you that it is not.
For 800ms points Axel and Pixel proves a real bargain and whilst it may not be able to compete with the brilliant Braid it is a very good title which exudes charm ad gameplay in abundance and is well worth considering particularly for any gamer looking for a more relaxing alternative to the countless shoot em ups currently available.
Pros:
+ Beautiful presentation
+ A real sleeper hit on XBLA
+ Good gameplay + Bargain for 800ms points Cons:
- Game is a little short
- Some puzzles a little bizarre
- Could be overlooked as being yet another puzzle game
