![]() Once upon a time...:
A series of famous fairytale characters were transported to a beautifully animated world, whilst there they came across a variety of evil enemies. Unlike any other fairytales this one saw the characters hell bent on causing as much carnage as possible…..Welcome to the world of "Fairytale Fights" !!!!
What's is it all about?
Fairytale Fights is a genuinely interesting concept which takes a series of familiar fairytale characters including: Little Red Riding Hood, Jack the giant killer, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and several others and transports them into a 3D beat em up with the emphasis on the copious amount of blood and gore.
Undoubtedly this makes the game not suitable for children despite it’s very cute presentation which could fool the player into believing that this is a kids game. It is not until the action starts that you soon begin to realise that this is far from the case.
Graphics - Sound:
The first thing that strike the player is just how colourful the game is and this is instantly noticeable from the outset with everything presented in a vivid eye popping way.
Character designs if truthful are a little on the disappointing side and seem to have gone more towards the less serious side to fit in with the theme of the game and as a result are graphically somewhat of a let down. In addition the enemy characters are very repetitive with endless swarms of identical foes to battle. Admittedly the boss characters do offer a nice variety but if I’m being honest the game becomes a little tedious even before your first encounter with one of the aforementioned end of level bosses.
The actual game worlds do seem a little better graphically with plenty of activity in both the foreground and background however their actual design does not lend itself too well to this style of game. All to often the player may find that they are making silly mistakes and plummeting to their death due to the level layout which is certainly not helped by a less than friendly camera perspective.
Initially this can be overlooked due to the fun amounts of weapons and gore although it soon becomes far too frustrating and will see you turning the game off out of sheer frustration.
The in game sound fits nicely into the fantasy setting and although unspectacular does add to the cute presentation. In many ways the sound and colourful settings are much better than the actual level designs and the overall graphics which do suffer from occasional pop ups and a less than smooth finish.
Gameplay:
As previously eluded to in the review the game takes on the form of a side scrolling beat em up with platform elements. Whilst this is nothing new what Fairytale Fights does well is the use of literally hundreds of different weapons which can be found throughout the game.
The weapons all bring something different with items such as lumberjack axes, bow and arrows and many more all of which can be used to slaughter enemies in different and very fun ways. This is where the real enjoyment in the game lies and quite often I found myself wandering aimlessly around just to seek out different weapons to see which offered the most fun and brutality.
