FAIRYTALE FIGHTS REVIEW![]() Posted by PlayDevil.com Staff on Jan 5, 2010 14:27 (Jan 5, 2010 14:27) |

In terms of difficulty the game rarely throws up a challenge and this is not helped by the use of infinite lives. In fact the real challenge comes not in the form of gameplay but from the poor camera and controls which will be explained later.
In many ways the gameplay is reminiscent to that found in the XBLA game Castle Crashers although Fairytale Fights seems far more repetitive despite it’s much higher retail cost. When taking this into consideration you may find that the actual game does not represent real value for money particularly in comparisons to other similar priced retail games.
Controls:
The controls are where the game sees a real difference from any other games in the genre. Fairytale Fights sees the game adopt a twin stick approach with the left stick used to control the player and the right stick used for attacks.
Whilst twin stick games have been done to death in the shoot em up genre Fairytale Fights is the first beat em up I can remember to take this on board. At this point I will say that although it may be seen as a risky strategy to try this from the developers it honestly does not work too well and if truth be known it makes the game far more awkward to control and some combo attacks nigh on impossible to perform.
I appreciate that the developers have wanted to try something different however I feel that it was a real missed opportunity. Whether the poor camera perspective makes this seem worse is questionable, however either way it is pretty poor and I guarantee will not see you wanting to return to the game all too often.
Multiplayer:
As with all games in this genre the single player aspect does get boring very quickly and to be fair it is not just Fairytale Fights which suffers from this and as a result the most fun can be found through multiplayer games.
Fairytale Fights supports a nice four player game both locally and online which certainly adds more enjoyment to the game particularly when playing with friends and it can prove a laugh especially when each of you has a different weapon at your disposal.
At the time of this review is being written there were not too many online games I was able to join which could be a reflection of how the game is not too popular amongst gamers. Having said this the games I did play in proved quite enjoyable and certainly made the game seem a little less of a chore.
Conclusion:
"Fairytale Fights" is undoubtedly an interesting concept which proves fun at first but quickly becomes pretty repetitive.
If truth be known if it was not for the weaponry and the option to play with three other people I would say give the game a wide berth however these do prove to be somewhat of a saving grace.
The game does have a budget feel about it and if it was available on XBLA quite possibly I would say not to hesitate to download it although as I full retail title I would have serious thoughts about parting with your cash on what could prove to be a five minute wonder.
Pros:
+ Very colourful with decent sound
+ Staggering amount of in game weapons + Multiplayer adds more to the game Cons:
- Poor level design and camera perspective
- Controls do not work too well - Very repetitive - Feels like a budget title
