![]() Yet another FPS?
"Borderlands" is the latest first person shooter to hit the Xbox 360 and it is safe to say that with the amount of already released games in this genre plus releases such as 'Modern Warfare 2' and 'Left 4 Dead 2' it could have been a somewhat risky strategy to release the game so close to these however what the game offers is a real surprise in terms of it’s overall quality.
Storyline:
Borderlands sees the player taking on the role of one of four vault hunters whom are on a quest to seek out treasure containing not only wealth but alien technology and more.
Throughout the game the story remains pretty engrossing thanks in no small part to the superb amount of diverse and entertaining quests which will ensure that the player will have hours upon hours of entertainment from this cracking little title.
Gameplay:
It should be said that Borderlands is a cross between a RPG and a FPS. By this I refer to the fact that killing enemies rewards the player with skill points which enables the characters to level up and gain better abilities which are pretty essential the further you progress.
The use of levelling up certainly adds longevity and gives the player more incentive to play using each of the four classes of selectable characters and is a good touch. The classes offer a nice amount of variety and includes Brick whom is a character who possesses huge strength and abilities to pound opponents, Roland whom is a soldier with great weapon abilities, Mordecai the sniper who excels with long range attacks and Lilith whom is the weakest character but has abilities to warp into another dimension and become invisible. Each character also has a number of other special abilities which can be upgraded and adds more to the RPG element and certainly brings more to the overall game.
It was always obvious that the game was going to draw comparisons to the PC classic Diablo and it is easy to see where the inspiration for Borderlands comes from. However with the game being on a next gen console so much more can be included in the amount of content, in particular the staggering amount of weaponry which can be used, the over the top enemies and the superbly designed fictional planet named Pandora where the action takes place.
Over the top is the perfect phrase to describe Borderlands and although the game may be yet another FPS it offers enough entertainment and variety in it’s gameplay that it is certainly a game well worth owning.
