Graphics:
There is nothing really wrong with the graphics in the game and they are presented in a pretty nice 3d aspect with decent backgrounds evident throughout which does give the game a pretty polished look.
The characters are instantly recognised from the movie however as with games such is this the countless enemies do lack variety and you will often find that you are battling against identical foes almost constantly although there are a good selection of well animated boss characters found at the end of each level.
The actual design of the 20+ levels are also on the decent side in how they are presented despite having minimal things which can be interacted with. In any side scrolling beat em up particularily on the next gen consoles I would have hoped for more interaction and destruction however in this games this is somewhat lacking.
Another criticism is that the overall graphical design does mean that the game is lacking the overall atmosphere of the movie despite looking decent and it is a shame that the developers could not get this balance right. Perhaps I am being too critical bearing in mind that the game costs 800ms points!
Multiplayer:
The one saving grace to the pretty dire gameplay is that the game does feature a welcome local and online multiplayer which does allow for a bit of variety and admittedly does break up the tediousness of the experience, however the only problem seems to be the lack of people currently playing online.
Overall I would say that as a multiplayer offering The Warriors Street Brawl stands up as an okay-ish game despite being pretty rank bad as a single player game.
Other game modes:
As already stated the game features a story mode which loosely follows the movie and a multiplayer mode plus further modes which to me these are included to give the game a little more padding.
These include an arcade mode which is not too dis-similar to the story mode except with more demanding and tougher enemies. This gives the game a far more retro feel as the difficulty is ramped up and no second chances are offered. Certainly this mode has been included for those looking for a tougher challenge however the majority of players will probably have one or two tries before realising that this mode really brings nothing to the table.
The other modes of note are the versus mode which allows two players to battle against each other in one on one combat to see who is the greatest combatant or in this case who has the best button bashing abilities!
Finally we have the unlockable boss mode which simply allows the player to fight against the boss characters in various arenas. Like the versus mode there is no real incentive to play this and seems to have been included just to give the game the look of offering decent value for money.
Conclusion:
It was somewhat of a risky strategy to release a side scrolling beat em up to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the cult classic movie "The Warriors" and I have to say that overall I am disappointed with the result.
Whilst the game does it’s best to follow the movies storyline it rarely captures any of the personality of what made the movie such a success.
Although the game is priced sensibly at 800ms points it just does not offer anything new and the gameplay deficiencies just highlights that the side scrolling beat em up genre is a tired formula and should be better left alone.
Pros:
+ Decent amount of game modes
+ Multiplayer adds more to the game + Pretty decent graphics Cons:
- Poor single player game
- Side scrolling beat em up genre looking very tired
- Very repetitive button bashing combat
