Graphics / Sound:
Graphically, the game is a little bit disappointing to be honest. Whilst the game uses two screens, it rarely makes good use of them both, focusing the energy on one- and this is sometimes fine, as it can make for good looking games. However, the 2D style, whilst fine, isn’t anything special that hasn’t been done on the DS before. In fact, it looks pretty average compared to some releases, which isn’t really up to Nintendo’s standards. There’s plenty of colour, and the levels are designed pretty well to give a lot of variety, but even the special effects are a bit second rate.
Sound is similarly fine, without ever being great. There’s some speech, but it’s fairly low quality, and could be a lot better if I’m totally honest. There should also be far more of it too. Music is fairly standard Mario fare, which is catchy and uplifting, although again, there’s nothing new or original about it.
Multiplayer:
There’s nothing here, and it’s a shame as co-op would have been pretty fun, with one player controlling Mario, and one Luigi.
Conclusion:
The latest Mario RPG, "Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story" is a good attempt by Nintendo, although it’s not quite up to the standards of previous games. It’s a little too short, a little too easy, and a little too kid-friendly for my liking to be honest, whilst the graphics and sound should have been given a more major overhaul in my opinion.
Having said that, the gameplay and platforming hybrid still holds up as well as ever, and the story is pretty decent too. It’s a game that anyone can play and enjoy, and whilst it may only last about 9 hours or so- you’ll have a ball playing it, and thus it’s still one of my favourite recent DS games.
Pros:
+ Story
+ Theme + Action RPG gameplay Cons:
- Short-ish
- Not much of a graphical update - No MP
