The ‘improved’ graphics are pretty lame to be honest- they look pretty much like a SNES game in fact. Maybe a little crisper and higher res- but certainly not any better texture, colour or fidelity wise- don’t expect any other fancy effects.

 

However, the game is bright, colourful and fun, and there’s a good variety between the game worlds. Animation is also pretty good for a DS game.

 

 

 

Multiplayer comes in two forms. If you have a friend that has a copy of the game, you can play co-op. It’s a shame there’s no wi-fi play, but it’s a nice addition if you can ever manage to find someone else with a copy.

 

Better, is the download play. Up to four can play the mini-games, and only one cart is required. As the mini games are pretty fun and challenging by yourself- with three friends they do become even better. I’m not a huge fan of local-only multiplayer, especially where more than one cart is required, but this is about as good as you can get with those flaws.

 

 

"Kirby: Super Star Ultra" is a bit of a half-assed upgrade. Graphically, it doesn’t look much better than a SNES game, whilst the FMV looks like a PS1 game. The individual games themselves don’t link that well, and there’s also not that much content if you aren’t interested in multiplayer or beating your own scores.

 

However, the multiplayer and min-games are fun to play with mates, and it’s nice to see long-time bad-guys King DeeDeeDee and Meta-Knight quite a bit. Kirby has always been a kids game, but this seems more aimed at nostalgia fans. I’m not sure who the target audience is, but most people will be able to get a few hours fun from the game regardless.
