Namco Bandai have redone the graphics, added in English voice acting, unlockable costumes and a time attack mode, though the game remains a quick journey from start to finish, which is one of the biggest negative issues. Klonoa is mostly challenge free as well, which means that it won’t keep the seasoned gamer at it for long, although this is sure to suit its younger target audience.
Graphics / Sound:
The graphics have been overhauled, meaning that the game doesn’t look as rough around the edges as it would have if they had left it with its 1998 look. The results are a very bright and attractive game; it’s faster, too.
As mentioned earlier, there’s now an English language option, although the voice acting is rather annoying (less so to children, I would think) and fans have noted that Klonoa’s voice isn’t as childish as it should have been, and is actually rather Sonic-like. The fictional Phantomile language is still an option for those who’d prefer it; even if they don’t understand a word of it (it’s lucky we have subtitles, then).
The music is fantastic, really uplifting and fitting for what is a very chirpy game on the whole.
Conclusion:
"Klonoa" is a brilliant platformer from the past that has been freshened up for the modern age. The utilisation of enemies is a clever manner in which to defeat them, as well as to reach higher heights, it’s just a shame that the game happens to be so easy and short. Ah well, at least it’s an enjoyably charming and light-hearted game whilst it lasts.
Pros:
+ Great graphical upgrade
+ It’s fun to use enemies as weapons and tools to greater heights + The easy difficulty will be pleasing for its younger target audience Cons:
- Doesn’t last long enough
- The English voice acting could have been better - The lack of challenge may irk some
