![]() 10 years later:
Back in 1999 Sega released what could only be described as a groundbreaking fishing game for their Dreamcast console which at the time was receiving massive amounts of praise.
Ten years later Sega have decided to re-launch their smash hit "Sega Bass Fishing" to the Nintendo Wii. The question however is if a ten year old franchise would still look and play as well as the original? Or would the game now appear tired and lacking in gameplay?
Game modes:
The game is broken down into three different modes plus a practice mode to ensure that there is a variety available for all. These are:
Arcade mode - This is probably the most accessible mode as players fish against a time limit with the objective being to catch a set weight of fish before progressing through the games fifteen different stages. Whilst accessible this mode can also be considered the most unrealistic with fish caught almost every few seconds.
Tournament mode - This mode gives the player the opportunity to take part in a series of bass fishing tournaments across the different stages to become the champion of the world. This is more suited for extended sessions or for those whom prefer an element of competition.
Nature Trip Mode - This is the most authentic fishing game on offer as it is played with no rules or music. This brings a more realistic feel to the game and will appeal to the more serious fishers.
Gameplay:
As the game has a more arcade feel the gameplay cannot be considered as realistic as real fishing however this does make the game appealing to those whom may not be experienced anglers.
It must be said that although there are numerous different lures to attract the fish these do not make a massive difference to the gameplay and take away a level of the tactics needed as in a game such as the Rapala fishing series.
In addition when a fish is hooked the game is packed with on screen prompts of what to do to ensure that the fish is caught and it has to be said whilst although this may help those unfamiliar to the sport it takes away a massive amount of the challenge which in truth is a disappointment.
The different game modes ensure that the gameplay does have a fair amount of variety but lets face it surely most gamers will be purchasing this to utilise the motion sensing controls.
Controls:
Now this is where the game should stand out as the game can be controlled using either just the Wiimote or a combination of Wiimote and nunchuck.
