TRIALS HD - CEO TERO VIRTALA INTERVIEW![]() Posted by PlayDevil.com Staff on Sep 23, 2009 14:53 (Sep 23, 2009 14:53) |
![]() We had a chance to speak with "Tero Virtala" who's the CEO of 'RedLynx', developer of the now famous XBLA game "Trials HD". Enjoy this exclusive interview with Tero and be sure to check out our in-depth 'Trials HD review' as well. 1. Trials has always been one of the most popular free flash games available. Can you explain why the decision was made to give it the full HD treatment and release it on the next gen consoles? As a 25 people indie studio, our aim has always been on multiplatform. Trying to create really good and fun games, that would also bring something new for the gamers. And different platform provide different opportunities for that, and that’s something we want to be able to do.
Trials got it’s start as small web and PC games. But the core game, the simple controls combined into realistic, highly polished physics model, provides number of expansion opportunities. Trials HD is an excellent example of that. We will follow that same logic also in the future – you can’t compare very different types of platforms in terms of which is one is better. They are different, they all have their strengths and limititations.
Taking those into account, or even turning limitations into strengths – provides excellent opportunities for innovation and great games. That’s what we want tp do also in the future.
2. How long did it take to make Trials HD?
10 guys, 12 months.
3. What was the inspiration to set the game in a deserted warehouse? Was there ever a thought to also include outside levels?
As with every game we make, with Trials HD we wanted to focus on making the core game as good as possible. In Trials HD, it’s he combination of simple control mechanics and highly developed physics model, linked with the aim of trying to pass the tracks / proceed as far as possible in these tracks. And then around that, build features that fit with this core-play the best.
The indoor, deserted warehouse provided an exciting and good setting at this point for all that. Of course it would have possible to have multiple environments, etc – but that would not have helped us in making the overall game that much better, while at the same having multiple environments would have forced us to focus on many more things at the same.
While we wanted to focus only on core things that we need would make the game really good.
4. How difficult was it to implement the trial bike physics and getting them to work so well?
As said, the physics are the core thing in Trials. Now in Trials HD, the bike physics is totally remade for Xbox. That was quite a big and important decision, as the physics in our previous Trials 2 SE - PC version was already really good and quite highly-appraised.
Still, we knew there were many things, that as individual points would not have made a huge difference, but with all the points combined, the physics has now really been taken to next level. Eg, we tuned the bike handling almost 6 months from the start until it felt exactly right, like we had dreamed it should be.
5. Was there ever a thought to include a split screen multiplayer option?
No. At this point we wanted to fully focus on the selected core things that you now see in the game – and make them as god as possible.
6. There has been a lot of criticism over the pricing of some Xbox live arcade games. Why do you think Trials HD represents good value for it’s 1200ms point price tag?
Very frankly, anyone who says that Trials HD doesn’t provide a lot to play for 1200 ms points…we sure would disagree. Trials HD is quite a new type of game, its a big game, and there is huge replay value in the game.
The game lets you in quite easily, but it has huge amounts of depth and challenge. Based on our earlier Trials 2 SE – game for PC, we know that there will be huge amounts of players who will play this game hundreds of hours. Not hundred, but hundreds, at least. In Trials 2 SE for PC, which was a smaller game, there were players, who played the game over 1000 hours.
Well, in addition to already said things, there are different game modes, and naturally level editor and level sharing…and when the core game is definitely good, with all the features that fit into this game well, there should be quite a good value for money.
7. Trying to beat friends times and scores is undoubtedly one of the greatest things about Trials HD. Can you tell us how this came about?
It’s definitely a feature that fits Trials HD. We’ve been making different sorts of leaderboards, and in many racing games, leaderboards sure work excellenty. In Trials HD we wanted to emphasize the friend-lists, as that had been found such an additctive part in Trials 2 SE for PC.
In skill game modes that is actually taken even further. In points based skill games there is a side score bar which shows your current score progression and also the final scores from 10 different friends. In distance- or position-based skill games the final crash position of 10 of your best friends is marked right into the game (so to make clear the scores are actually graphically INSIDE the track) in the place where your friend crashed. When you pass your friends marker you can point and laugh and wonder how on earth he managed to crash on a place like that.
All that definitely gives simple and add huge boost as an competitive element!. When we got the feature working everyone in our office was right away asking each gamer tag to add!
