![]() Summer Of Arcade:
I would like to start this review by saying that it came as somewhat of a surprise to see "Trials HD" as being one of Microsoft’s ‘Summer Of Arcade’ titles. Mainly because the Trials brand is usually associated with free PC flash games available via the internet.
Although Trials HD looked impressive graphically I still remained a little sceptical as to whether it was essentially the same game with a high definition make over and due to this would it represent a worthwhile download for the pretty costly 1200ms points.
After playing the excellent trial version I will admit to be drawn in enough to part with the ms points as I couldn’t get enough of the addictiveness of this game. However I still had concerns as to whether the game would have enough of a replay factor and offer enough variety to be considered value for money.
Gameplay:
For those whom have played the trial version what I will say is what you see in that is pretty much what you get in terms of how the game is played and if truth be known it can be considered rather basic. What I mean by this is that the game simply requires the player to control the rider by using the RT to accelerate, LT to brake and the left stick to adjust the riders position to negotiate obstacles.
Whilst it may sound pretty simplistic this is what makes the game stand out and make it as great as it is. Whilst the controls are very simple it is how the levels are designed which ensures that the game will go down as a cult classic.
It would be fair to say that Trials HD is one of the most frustrating and challenging games currently available as you will find that you make constant mistakes before you progress. Somehow the developers have used this to ensure that the game becomes very addictive and has that one more go factor.
Due to the amount of mistakes that will constantly be made a very welcome instant restart button has been included which takes the rider back to the last checkpoint which are well placed after each obstacle. This has been cleverly done to ensure that you will not give up until you have completed a level or beaten your best time.
The real genius of the game however is the online friends leader boards which constantly show how friends have done on the same courses (or mini games) as you and this make the game even more playable as not only do you want to progress but beat the best times.
In my opinion this is one of the best competitive score chasing games currently available on the 360 and is a stunning inclusion to what is already is very good game.
