![]() Magical?
'Arkanoid' is one of the oldest games around, and most modern rip-offs have been drap, dull affairs that have tried to spice up the genre with ridiculous power-ups or thousands of mind-numbing levels. "Magic Ball" aims to change things up by presenting the game in a pseudo 3-D environment and adding physics to the mix, but does this new approach work?
Gameplay:
Gameplay-wise, the game takes things a step further from the classic block-breaker/arkanoid format, which is pleasant. And that’s on top of the physics engine which I’ve already mentioned. There are some pieces which are destructible, but if you hit them first, will aid you buy firing cannons, for example.
Equally, some things to destroy are pretty large, and can’t be initially hit, like a pirate ship or castle. So you have to destroy the base to bring down the other parts.
Other elements of the map move, to add a further challenge. However, what is pleasant is that once you’ve destroyed about 98% of what’s on the map, you’ll automatically get a power-up which lets you progress to the next level. This is a much needed advance in what could always become really frustrating at the end of arkanoid levels.
There’s only two skins for levels, however (although each contains 25 levels), which are knights and pirates, which are cool choices, but a little more variety would have been appreciated, although DLC has been promised for the game.
